The late 85s and 86s (including Stafford and five of the top six) would lose their NCAA eligibility if they were to opt in to the 2004 draft. The career path for these elite players if they opt in would probably be:

Opt in to the draft, losing NCAA eligibility, and be drafted.

Play the next one or two years in Canadian major juniors.

On to the NHL.

Alternatively, they could wait until the 2005 draft and retain their full college eligibility. Montoya was in the same boat last year and chose to not enter the draft.

When Hennessy interviewed Drew last weekend, did it sound like he was thinking about opting in? I couldn't really figure it out. I don't think he will, but what do I know?

It is always a thought in his mind, but I dont think he will. if hell freezes over and he lasts all four years, it'll make him 21 when he graduates. That being said, even ZP would be 22 if he stayed all four years.

In any case, I don't think anyone's leaving early unless things in the NHL start looking better.

I agree with CRR. Stafford will probably opt in the next year after next because there (I dont' care what Don Cherry Says) The players and the owners are miles appart. Some of these kids are going to be around one more year at least. Which I think UND wins in that situation.

This may be selfish thinking but i sure hope so. UND could lose a lot in the next couple of years due to graduation and early defection.

Everyone is agreeing with CRR when I said it in the post previous.

Gosh, I think the Mapletoft thing really did impact how much Im listened too :silly:

I wonder how things will turn up next year if this agreement isn't reached and there is a strike. I mean, no one will leave the college ranks and with our peeps already coming in, who knows.

Oh, quit whining, RW77, your post has been read and noted.

Well I could figure out for myself that it might not be a good idea for Drew to opt in if there won't be an NHL next year. I was hoping for insight. At least dagies gave it. The rest of you should be ashamed of yourselves. :silly:

And RW77, quit your complaining, you little weenie. You've have no credibility on this board.

Yes.

Yes it did.

This is disconcerting. Stafford is under-age for this year's draft which is why he would have to "opt-in." Under-age players who opt-in to the draft after enrolling in college lose their remaining eligibility. Bizzarely, players can opt-in before enrolling without losing eligibility. Only the NCAA could come up with that. :silly:

I counted four Wisconsin players on the College list. Not sure how well those players are doing. I guess Wisco could be losing a lot to the NHL as well.

Wisconsin has a very talented freshman class with several young guys that haven't been drafted yet. None of the Badgers in this draft class would seem to be likely candidates to turn pro any time soon. Ryan Suter on the other hand, could be a one-year Badger.

Diggler- Look who's talking :silly:

What would most likely happen with someone like Drew if he opted in would be what may very well happen to Marc-Andre Fleury. Drew would get drafted by a team, lose his NC$$ eligibility and be assigned to major juniors. M-A Fleury hasn't been assigned back to his team, but it is a definite possibility.

It wouldn't make sense at all for Drew or anyone for that matter to leave early for the NHL after this season if they don't have an agreement. I mean, it would be hurry up and wait.
