No love for a player who had limited ice time last season and still managed to score 11 pts.

Ok, sit offense. I don't care.

Anyone else glad they sat Toews tonight?

#18.... get used to seeing it as an active player and not a scratch.

Cichy named rookie of the week

UND has its first weekly honor of the 2009-10 season.

Freshman Mike Cichy was named the WCHA rookie of the week today. Cichy had a goal and two assists and a team-best plus-four rating in UND's sweep of Merrimack last weekend.

Cichy's goal on Saturday night gave UND the lead for good.

Cichy was named the second star of the game on Friday night and the first star of the game on Saturday night.

Other honorees were Michigan Tech's Brett Olson, who had five points on opening night and MSU-Mankato's Kurt Davis, who was a plus-4 on the weekend.

Genoway is defensive player of week

Defenseman Chay Genoway wasn't feeling well this weekend but did enough damage to earn defensive player of the week honors in the WCHA.

Genoway scored three goals in a three-point weekend against Minnesota -- the same number of goals he had all of last season. He had one on Friday night and a pair of power-play goals on Saturday. Genoway currently leads the team in scoring.

Genoway also has been named one of the three stars in every Sioux game this season.

The other players of the week were Duluth's Justin Fontaine (offensive) and Colorado College's Joe Howe (rookie).

Great to see!

Trupp seems to have turned a corner lately...it helps that he seems to finally have shaken the injury bug (KNOCK ON WOOD!).

Hakstol has said before that he is a candidate for a future Hobey Finalist...I for one would love to see him really have a great senior season and prove Hakstol right. :)

Kind of funny/meaningless to look at now, but USCHO posted the current PWR and Bracketology:

http://www.uscho.com/rankings/pwr.php

http://www.uscho.com/blogs/bracketology/ja...acketology.html

As of now, UND would be the final #1 seed behind BSU, Miami, and MSU.

And this is how their regional would shake out:

Midwest Regional (Ft. Wayne)

4 North Dakota vs. 14 Mass.-Lowell

5 Quinnipiac vs. 12 Notre Dame

As a Sioux fan, I'd love to see that regional actually happen! :)

As I said, it's meaningless to look at in Nov, but interesting nonetheless.

They play hockey in Ft. Wayne?

Gregoire got interviewed by Hockey's Future: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/1175...jason_gregoire/

HF: Islanders summer camp, how'd that go for you this year?

JG: Really good. I've gone the past three years. David Toews went with me, obviously that's pretty neat -- same NHL team, same college team, both from Winnipeg. The camp is a blast, it's great to meet the guys, the organization and you can compare yourself to some of the high-end guys and see how far off or how close you are to the NHL. Which is huge for a player like me who is potentially two, three years away from making that jump. It's fun, it's neat. I love getting up there.

As Sioux fans we can hope he's in a UND sweater for two more seasons.

These next three series will tell a lot about what this Sioux team can do.

Gophers on the road.

Cornell on the road.

Denver at home.

Three quality opponents, with two of the series on the road.

If the Sioux can win 3 or 4 of those 6 games, I would be happy, especially being that we will more than likely be without Hextall, Knight, and Genoway for all three series.

Go Sioux!!

hf prospect reviews - florida

Corban Knight, C - University of North Dakota

6'1, 180 lbs

Acquired: 5th Round, 135th overall, 2009

Knight was due to rejoin his AJHL squad the Okotoks Oilers this season, but made the move to the NCAA when a spot opened up late with the Fighting Sioux. He had been scheduled to join UND in the fall of 2010. Like Birkholz, as a newcomer to a perennially competitive team, Knight is seeing little ice in his freshman season. He has also posted similar stats -- three goals in 20 games played. Knight is more comfortable in the offensive zone, and has the skill set of a scorer. Knight is out four to six weeks with an ankle injury, but his future next year and going forward is sound.

Derrick LaPoint, D - University of North Dakota

6'3, 195 lbs

Acquired: 4th Round, 116th overall, 2006

A major offensive contributor in the USHL, LaPoint has never quite become the same type of force in college. Still, in his junior year, LaPoint is having his most productive collegiate campaign to date. The 21-year-old has one goal and 11 assists in 24 games. His previous bests in assists and points were five and seven respectively, posted in his freshman year.

With three freshmen on the Fighting Sioux blueline, LaPoint has moved into a more prominent role. He mans the power play and kills penalties, his only goal of the year coming shorthanded. He leads all UND defensemen in total points. Though less lanky than in year's past, LaPoint has definite issues with his mobility and defensive play.

Not sure about that.

He's pretty solid as far as I am concerned.

Blowing 2 goal leads?

Eidsness not playing well?

Sioux don't generate enough offense?

http://www.areavoices.com/undhockey/?blog=68950

The first hot topic: UND's two-goal leads this season. For sure, UND has let too many slip away. But it's hard to say that it's because "UND went in a shell and didn't try to score after going up by two goals." In fact, in eight games this season -- exactly one-third of the games -- UND extended a two-goal lead to three goals (and none by hitting an empty net). So it has been an extremely common occurance to see UND extend two-goal leads. Only Wisconsin and Colorado College have extended two-goal leads more often than the Sioux.

The second hot topic: Goaltending. There were complaints that UND has not had the caliber of goaltenders as other WCHA programs over the years (yes, just a year and a half after the Sioux had a Hobey Baker finalist in net). In the last four years, UND is the only WCHA program to have three all-conference goalies (not to mention, they were all different guys, including the current goaltender).

The third hot topic: UND hasn't been a very good offensive team since Dave Hakstol took over as coach. The truth is that UND has finished either first or second in the WCHA in offense during each of the last four years -- the only league team to do that.

So, relax, things are not as bad as they seem (and they shouldn't seem that bad being that UND has lost one time in the last month and is ranked No. 5 in the country).
