  1. Than why is it so hard to let go of the Fighting Sioux name?

It isn't.   I stated earlier I am not in the no nickname camp for the reason of keeping on using the Sioux name.

I am in the no nickname camp because I have yet to see a reason (besides fear mongering, and pie in the sky dollars rolling in due to having a nickname) to pick a new one.

Being known as North Dakota using the interlocking ND is unique, and I couldn't be more proud if this stance was taken, both for the emphasis it puts on the state, and also how it would tell the ncaa we're not interested in playing their stupid nickname game anymore.

  2. I threw out a question on this thread....How many NCAA schools currently have no nickname?  It your answer is 1, than you are correct.  Now why do schools need nicknames for their athletic teams?  If it is not important, why don't you see schools dropping their nuckname and just go as "Michigan" or "Notre Dame."?  Sure those schools have name recognition and branding on just the name of the school itself, but the chose to pick a nickname and still have it today?  Now why is that?  Answer that question and you will realize why a nickname is important to a University/College.

Well heck, if all the kids are doing it, why not us?    I'm sold- let's go with either Fighting Lemmings or Sheep.

Your example is not relevant because they have not all gone through the process we have, so it's hard to debate.   My guess is if every school was forced to drop their current nickname, some of them would prefer to tell the ncaa to go eff themselves, and proceed forward without one, putting the emphasis on their school name going forward.

  3. UND has changed their logo and/or brand many times over the last 130 years, not sure what your point is there.  The Fighting Sioux nickname alone was rebranded multiple times in its existence.

Where are you getting this millions of dollars number from?  Even if that is the case, wouldn't the majority of it be the same dollars that would be used to implement the interlocking ND logo you want?

I'd have a lot easier time believe the "No Logo/Nickname" crowd if it wasn't painfully obvious that it is a façade for being able to use Fighting Sioux as a de facto nickname.

My point is the name University of North Dakota is what defines the university...not some nickname.

Post #1246, to answer your question about the millions.

I'm not part of the crowd thinking this is some way to keep using fighting Sioux.   I would be proud as hell if we forged our way without a new, worthless, nickname.   We are North Dakota - no further explanation necessary.

I think you're kidding yourself if you think choosing a new nickname is going to make any difference in the minds and actions of those that chant Sioux at the end of the anthem, or do Sioux cheers, or wear Sioux clothing.

  4. Still waiting for Hayduke and the other adults to show a projection chart or at least explain how a new nickname is going to result in increased merchandise sales by the millions, and put us on par with the big boys as he called them....

It sounds like the main two reasons we're choosing a name are 1.  Afraid of the ncaa.   and 2.  the gravy train of notoriety, championships, and cash that will rain down on campus.

I don't believe number 1 is valid;  the ncaa is not going to play thought police.   UND is not using Sioux anymore.   the ncaa cannot expect UND to control individual's actions.   They would have to make a universal ban on all indian logo clothing at every school.....that will not happen.

People like to throw around terms like "brand" and "licensing".

You don't rebrand 130 years of history and tradition.   the University itself is the brand.  the interlocking ND is the logo.

Millions will be spent to implement a new nickname no one likes.   It will be along time before that money is recouped with the sales of Sundog sweatshirts.

Oxbow6, ScottM,  among others are correct saying winning is what makes the difference in merchandise sales, exposure, and athletic department donations.

anyway, recess is over, so, back to class.

  5. Does UND want to be a real D-1 school?

    I would hope so.

To do so, it takes $$$. Marketing and branding is not a joke. Profit from the sale of UND gear is down. Obviously because the Sioux logo is vanishing and nobody wants those ugly damn shirts/jerseys that just have "North Dakota" on them.

UND's athletic budget...the spending...is at about 22 million dollars. Schools like Colorado State University spend about 34 million. Wyoming spends about 27 million.

Want to play with the big boys...gotta have more revenue which equals more spending. CSU and UW aren't even the big boys. Yet, UND can't match them.

Personally, I have 7 Sioux hockey jerseys. 8 Sioux hoodies...20...yes 20 Sioux caps... winter caps, cell phone covers...t-shirts...on and on... all with Fighting Sioux name and logo. Stuff that can't be as easily found now. I have it for myself. I'll wear them proudly. But...

I want to see UND grow into a strong D-1 school. This generation in school needs a nickname/mascot...whatever. Something beyond "North Dakota" to brand the school. It is needed for marketing purposes. The name Fighting Sioux is no longer an option. It's dead.

Get over it and move on. Let this generation have their name. We had ours.

Don't be selfish and continue to act like petulant children. Grow up.

Speaking for the children as you call us, why don't you and the other adults put some concrete numbers together explaining how having a new nickname is going to translate into $12million per year of increased t-shirt sales so we can be on par with Colorado State?

I await your report like an impatient child.

    Thank you.

  6. Do you really think the average stiff sitting on their sofa at home will know the difference between North Dakota's interlocking "ND" and Notre Dame's interlocking "ND"?  Do you think that same average stiff sitting on the sofa will be able to distinguish between the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University if one of those schools has no athletic nickname and logo?  I don't want us being called the "Bison" by anybody, accident or not.

If that bothers you, you have a valid point for wanting a name.

But as far as i'm concerned, I don't care about the average stiff that doesn't know the difference between Notre Dame and UND.   odds are if he's that dumb, we don't need him here as a student, and he would probably never have the financial means to give back to the U. anyway.

Same goes for the sexually indifferent sons 70 miles to the south....   If someone can't differentiate between UNIVERSITY OF, and STATE UNIVERSITY, why is it worth my time to care?   They are irrelevant in terms of continuing the effort to make UND successful.

  7. Let's just stick to what you said earlier, rather than your completely different statement you made now....

You said in response to having a "brand".....

"......which pays off in terms of exposure. When Gonzaga started making runs in the NCAA tournament in the early 2000's, they attracted potential students who otherwise would not have even heard of the school."

So I'll ask it a different way: how many points did the brand score to contribute to the run in the NCAA tournament?    Or are you saying no one would have heard of Gonzaga after their great tournament runs if they did not have a nickname?

and as far as the car statement, Sic and I were just having a little fun with an analogy back and forth; I figured what better way to forfeit victory to him by also giving him his beloved Roughrider name.    :)

  8. .....which pays off in terms of exposure. When Gonzaga started making runs in the NCAA tournament in the early 2000's, they attracted potential students who otherwise would not have even heard of the school.

Come on now.... Which preposterous statement are u making here.....

Are you saying if Gonzaga didn't have the nickname Bulldogs, no one would have heard of Gonzaga after their tournament run?

Or are you saying they were successful, because they had a nickname?

  9. A lot of people said the old car sucked too. That's why it's on blocks now.

If you're happy with where you're at (no car, the old one on blocks, stuck to things in walking distance, reliving the days of driving the old car) great, but you're not going anywhere far or fast.

If you want to get somewhere get a car and go.

We've been represented all over the world since parking the old car.

What, specifically, does this new car guarantee? Is the new car going to automatically win championships and supply a bottomless supply of money?

If so, I relent. Sign me up for the loaded, souped up all new SUV, the Chevy Roughrider, as I stand quietly nodding my approval while swallowing my own vomit. :-)
  10. I'm also stuck to a world that is within walking distance. I'd like to go places. Not replacing the car is holding me back.

You can still get wherever you want to go, without a car. You're giving that potential new car way too much credit

. I bet a lot of people will tell you your new car sucks- why deal with that hassle?

More people will admire your decision to be unique, and not rely on a car.

  11. Logos can be very important to universities, and not just for their symbolic value; just ask the University of Texas, which makes more than $10 million a year by licensing its Longhorn mark.

Whoa whoa whoa.... I thought that was a Bison thing?   LOL.

  12. There was conversation about here in the past about how that data was reported. I don't recall the outcome so I'll let someone else deal finding that information.

Indeed. And that ambiguity means that UND is the "the wrong judge in the wrong court on the wrong day" away from being subject to the NCAA Policy.

There is one sure-fire way to avoid that: Choose a new nickname*.

*Absence of a nickname is not a "new" nickname. It'd be like me putting my car in storage (because it didn't meet 'NCAA emissions standards' :silly: ) and then when someone at work asks me about my new car I point to an empty parking spot in the lot and say, "There it is."

The question becomes is the NCAA going to force you to buy a car? Your lack of a car clearly meets their emissions standards.

  13. FCS football gets a lot more national coverage than college hockey, though. How many FCS games on ESPN? Now how many college hockey games? How about sports shows? FCS football shows up on those highlights, especially if they upset a FBS squad, a lot more than college hockey. That fact remains, whether you like it or not, that hockey is extremely unpopular in America when looking at things relatively.

FCS football is also extremely unpopular in America when looking at things relatively. So as GD said - same/same.

Instead of trying to tear hockey and its significance down, build football up. This is already being done- bubba is righting the ship. As Oxbow said, win some big games, make the playoffs, and the people and $$$ will come.

  14. If hockey wasn't performing and selling 11,000 tickets per home game one would have to question the emphasis on hockey. But it is, and it's the fiscal engine right now.

I think it was Coach Wooden that said, "You can't build something up by tearing something else down."

How about we worry about building up and not 'blaming' other programs inside the house.

You said it perfectly. Thank you.

  15. Nah. I have the same beef with pretty well all attendance numbers... At all schools.

Same beef? Then why ask the question if you don't believe the numbers, or the people at the game?

    #buttgetalife

  16. I was there and there were hundreds of empty seats. Seats are usually sold out but I was surprised at how many empty seats there were and have been for other games. It wouldn't surprise me for Niagra but I was surprised for this series. Those folks must have all gone to Frisco.

Student section was 1/10th the size it normally is since they are still considered on Christmas break.... So there were a lot more tickets available to the general public, and those folks don't generate as much noise as the students do.
