  1. Calm down Chicken Little.....

    1) There is going to be a nickname.

    2) It's going to be faster then some would like....way to slow for others.

    3) Most will hate the nickname.

    4) As long as there is movement towards a new nickname, as slow as it may be, I doubt the NCAA will take us to court.

Chicken Littles, Scaredy Cats, Fear Mongerers.... Lots of nickname ideas coming from this discussion.

  2. Who is offended? Anyone doesn't want to just be known as just the University of North Dakota. Which is more than you think. Of course we all wish the Fighting Sioux name could live on forever. Well that is not going to happen. Any name chosen will obviously not be as good as the Fighting Sioux. But it is time to move on and select a new name that will honorable and that fans can get behind.

Some people may not like to have no nickname, but that is not the same as being offended. Big difference. For example, If a new nickname is forced on UND, 98% of us will probably think the new nickname sucks, but that will not allow us to demand the NCAA put the UND Flaming Peace Rainbows on its naughty list.

  3. Prior to 2005 what would or could the NCAA do if we had an Indian nickname. Well in 2005 we saw what they can do, it's their club and if they say have a nickname or face sanctions do we pick a name or apply for the NAIA?

2005 is a completely different scenario. Who is UND offending now by having no nickname?

I thought I just explained this: If the NCAA handed down sanctions because of having no nickname, UND would file a discrimination lawsuit. And win. The NCAA' would have no argument to stand on, and would look like fools trying to play Thought Police on their opinion of UNDs intentions to remain nickname-less. Thus, they would never hand out sanctions.

  4. 10 years? So in 2024 we can have this same discussion and give it another 5-10 years after that. No one will be happy because it's not the Fighting Sioux we all understand that. But there comes a time where you have accept that a new name will be chosen, and that time is now.

I don't get why we have to have a nickname, and especially don't get why "that time is now." The 2 scare tactics being used to force a new name don't hold water.

    1. I. don't believe the nonsense about losing out on countless $$$ because UND sweatshirts don't have a unicorn or sun dog on them. It could be argued alienating a large percentage of donors with a moronic nickname would be just as costly if not more so.

    2. What in the wide wide world of sports could the NCAA do if we continued to have no nickname? I would like to see the NCAA rule mandating nicknames. Is there one?

There is no way the NCAA could impose sanctions against UND for not having a nickname; their argument would essentially boil down to playing the role of Thought Police.... "Your Honor, Even though UND has no official nickname, we just know deep inside their minds they are still thinking they are the Fighting Sioux."

    Ridiculous.

  5. I think you're kidding yourself if you think sales of UND merchandise haven't gone in the tank since items with the Sioux logo on them have sold out. Ask the next sales floor person you see at Scheel's how UND merchandise is doing lately next time you're in there...

That's probably attributed to people buying lifetime supplies of Sioux stuff.

I also would like to see what this "big financial hit" is estimated to be if there is no new nickname.

My guess is the number of donors that feel even further alienated by having some new nickname forced on them and thus quit giving or lower their amount, will outweigh selling a few extra sweatshirts that say "UND... <insert dumb nickname here>."

  6. if you think McFeely is pro-NDSU, you should probably lay off the dope for a while.

Um, he would basically make love to Saul Phillips during his interviews with him. And he made sure to make fun of UND's drawn out football coach hiring process, but never said a word about NDSU's AD search taking so long, only to end up hiring the Barney Fife of Stony Brook.

  7. Call me a jerk but I'm just not a fan of Rudolph's play calling. Yes yes players and injuries and what not. Just don't love it regardless

You're a jerk. Along with thousands of us fans. :-)

  8. Begs the question as we are getting our butts whipped by winless Weber, is UND the worst team in the big sky at the moment?

I think that's been quite obvious for the last few weeks.

  9. You're missing the point, entire conversation or no. The point is "positioning statement" or not, the informal use of the Fighting Sioux nickname by fans yelling this or that and the lack of a nickname is not offensive or hostile and abusive or otherwise. The school is not using the nickname or imagery associated with it and that's what was "hostile and abusive" as per the NCAA and the professional pouters. The nickname is "North Dakota". If fans associate "Fighting Sioux" with it, how's that "hostile and abusive" on the part of the school or its teams? It's not. End of story.

I agree. I would like to see what the nc$$ would do or try to do. I think the nc$$ wiuld eventually cave, as they woukd look ridiculous playing the role of Thought Police, and threatening sanctions for not having a nickname.

  10. Ok, so here's an idea.

IMO, the best logos are simple. For example, I think the Vikings have the best helmet in the NFL. Simple and straight forward. It's easily recognizable from a distance as well as still looks good close up.

So, how about taking on the nickname of the "Black Stripes"? We're all familiar with the little black rectangle (censor bars) that censors out sensitive body parts on tv.

Well, the NCAA censored UND's nickname. So we stick a simple black stripe on our football helmets and across the front of our hockey jerseys. Call ourselves the "Black Stripes" (hey, really think the "Red Sox" was all that cool when it was first proposed?).

Simple, easy to recognize, unique, pokes a bit of a finger at the NCAA, non-offensive......

    Excellent idea! Works for me.
