  1. Such a shame you couldnt answer my Slippery Rock question in a civil manner. I was being serious. I didnt know if you were being facetious with the Slippery analogy.

I do agree with your premise that the NCAA requires a new nick name and that was their intent so Sioux couldnt be used anymore.

I had explained what Slippery Rock uses for a nickname.  (Rock)  You then, asked me if the ncaa ever considered their name hostile and abusive.  I interpreted that as a rhetorical, smart aleck question.   I responded in kind.  I refuse to believe that anyone with the cognitive ability to log on to a website would be unsure if a rock- regardless of its adhesive properties- was considered hostile and abusive.

This is off topic anyway.   I'll let it stay on course with all these "great" nicknames everyone is coming up with.   ;-)

  2. Question---was Slippery Rock having problems with the NCAA in regards to a hostile and abusive nickname? Did the NCAA order Slippery Rock to change there nickname? Did the NCAA say Slippery Rock had to have a nick name? Besides UND has the NCAA demanded any school to have a nickname?

I'll try make an analogy you might understand.

Back when you were in the residence halls at ndsu, nearly everyone had their pet goat living in their door room.  Unfortunately, yours died.  ndsu ordered you to get a new goat, or you would be kicked out of school.  But you did not want to bother with a new goat.   And as you pointed out to the administration, your best friend JimBob across the hall did not have a goat, yet he was allowed to live in the dorms and not get kicked out of school.   The End.

  3. It isn't leading if no one is following you.  And no one is going to go without a nickname in the near future (at least the next decade or 2).

Actually leading would have been one of 2 things.  Either developing very strong relationships with all local tribes to ensure their support to use the name, or dropping the name before it became an issue with the NCAA.

Not at all what i'm talking about when referring to leading.  I'm fine with no new nickname.   The old one would have just continued to cause problems even if "support" was granted from the tribes.

  4.

We missed the boat on that in the current world.

And you know this to be true. Cool. Can you hook me up with Saturday's PowerBall numbers too? ;)

I don't see why my posts need to be 100% factual.....

Please explain how you know the big bad NCAA will come after us like the Thought Police?  Or please explain the delusional posts about the interlocking ND being banned by the NCAA as a possible new official logo?

Look, I know those in charge will never have the balls to stay with the interlocking ND and go forward without a cutesy mascot.  The fear mongering has all the sheep ready to jump off the cliff by May.

When the "no nickname" option is officially taken off the table, my vote will be for UND Lemmings.

Now, let's hear some more about those millions of merchandise dollars waiting to be raked in, with this "new" 100-years-late-to-the-nickname-party, mascot and logo!!!  Will we even need to donate anymore, or will the new nickname cover all costs in the future?

  5. So, predictions on the final list?

    < ethereal noun -- like "Liberty" >

    < regional raptor >

< clawed mammal, but not too scary >

    < weather phenomena >

    < color >

    What's missing?

gay superheroes.  Or is "gay" implied?

  6. Don't go down a rabbit hole.

The issue is the world is changing around us. We sat back and didn't believe it. Well, it did. And now, like it or not, we have to live in that changed world.

You're correct, the world is changing.   I said several pages ago, a hundred years from now no one will have a nickname.   Everything is becoming offensive to somebody.  The first time a longhorn breaks a leg running around a football field, or a bulldog dies of heat stroke in the end zone, animal nicknames will come under fire.

Why play the stupid nickname game at all?

  7. Folks, I'm listening to a radio talk show right now discussing how Ringling Brothers is dropping elephants acts from their shows in three years because of constant, continual animal rights (PETA) protests.

The host is talking about how it happened because the majority who support Ringling didn't get in front of it, didn't take it seriously, because they didn't believe it could really happen. And now folks are upset that the decision has been made.

"Who are these people who complained? Are they < event > fans?" was the question he just posed.

But that really doesn't matter. The elephants are kicked out of the circus.

This scenario should ring eerily familiar to all of us.

I guess the obvious question to ask then is, If fans of the circus continue to wear elephant t-shirts, will PETA sue Ringling and shut them down?  And on what "fair" grounds?

  8. One reading of the settlement agreement would say yes, may not have been used.. ever.... BY THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA.  You missed that part.  UND could use Warriors or Tigers, 2 of the most popular nicknames around, because UND has not used them before.

So the ncaa also banned us from going back to the Flickertails?   interesting....I think you're pulling some of this from somewhere other than the settlement agreement.

  9. The agreement doesn't say that they have to stop using the ND logo (and certainly doesn't say that they have to stop using the letters N and D).  tSic didn't say that no logos or nicknames used in the past are allowed.  The agreement says that they have to stop using the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo, and that they have to replace the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo with a new nickname and new logo.  It is spelled out pretty simply in the settlement agreement section printed above.  The ND logo has been a secondary logo for many years.  It can continue to be a secondary logo.  But UND has to choose a new nickname and a new logo to replace Fighting Sioux as the primary nickname.

Your bolded part makes my point, actually.   The settlement assumes (correctly) the Fighting Sioux is the old nickname, and the old logo.   Where in the agreement does it mention primary and secondary names and logos? ???

  10. So, by this argument, the new nickname may not have been used... ever? Completely new? Original? That's quite a leap.

    Lol agreed.

This is sounding more and more like George Orwell's 1984.

The letters N and D have now been removed from the alphabet. Adjust accordingly or suffer the consequences!

  11. UND has been using the interlocking ND since at least the 1930s. It was modified a few years ago to try and make it a little different from Notre Dame, but it is still an interlocking ND. It isn't a new logo in any way, shape or form.

You know what I meant, but if this fits your premise, go with it. Lol

If no logos or nicknames used in the past are going to be allowed as stated by Sicatoka a few posts ago, when will all the N's and D's be removed from campus? Seems like quite an undertaking, hopefully The Herald takes some pics.

  12. The NCAA says that UND must select a new name.  That part is cleary stated in the settlement.  The reason behind it is that not having a name would result in fans just using the Fighting Sioux name unnoficially as their mascot.  Replacing it with nothing results in continues use of the old name.  The NCAA knew this would happen.  And they were right.  It is still happening.  We haven't officially been the Fighting Sioux for nearly 3 years and people still refer to the teams as the Sioux.  This is precisely why the NCAA mandated in the settlement that we must select a new name.

You are correct- "people" do, but the university doesn't.    The deal is with the university, not the general population.   People will still wear their Sioux apparel for years to come regardless of a new nickname or not.    If it went to court the ncaa would have no grounds to stand on.....they would be using a Thought Police reasoning to state their case.

And besides, the interlocking ND is a new logo.

Slippery Rock University gets by calling themselves Slippery Rock with an inference to "The Rock" also being their nickname.  So, their nickname is the same as their schoolname, yet they somehow get by without litigation from the ncaa.

  13. Can people please realize that just being "North Dakota" is NOT an option?  The settlement agreement that UND signed clearly states that.  The NCAA made sure that UND would have to select a new nickname because having none would result in the perpetual use of the old one.  Any you cannot deny that is not currently happening right now.  So if you think that having no name and just being known as "North Dakota" is an option....I am hear to inform you that you are dead wrong and that it is absolutely without a doubt not an option for UND.

Wrong.   It's been hashed over several times in the nickname threads.

  14. Hey, how about the Big, you know what, nevermind.

go with Blackhawks.  Use a Blackhawk bird as the "official" logo, but everyone can just buy their logo'd apparel from the Chicago Blackhawks.   And gfhockey is happy, because his favorite word is contained within the word Blackhawk.    So it's a win-win.  (minus the loss of apparel revenue)

  15. Inside sources in the AD dept just laugh at the tiny minority people posting that Jones needs to be canned.  TheY wonder where do these people come from and do they have no pride in being wrong ..every day, and every season...wrong wrong and wrong again..Yet they persist in their folly.   The AD  does expect UND to get into the playoffs next season if not Jones will be MAY be replaced and the discussion about his future moves from absurd to a topic for sane people...  Until then Jones is the coach and  I was right about him not getting fired last season or this season and all of you are still wrong day after day and year after year.

Given the fact he failed to get last year's most talented team in school history a signature win, or a dance appearance, or barely finish above .500....And followed that up with 6 D1 wins this year,  I think we're right right and right again in our opinion of Jones.   But you keep drinking the kool-aid.

  16. You mean run the same play they did the possession before where Hooker got doubled and then forced into the corner and turned the ball over?  Doesn't make sense to try that again when everyone in the building knew Hooker was going to take the last shot.  The ball was inbounded at halfcourt, no one brought the ball up.  To try to get Hooker open, they ran him off two screens through the middle lane.  He got it, took a few dribbles and he absolutely beat his guy but the double team rotated over.  Had that rotation not made it in time, that's the mid-range jumper he's been absolutely burying.  His option was to swing it to Shanks, who didn't have an open shot on the defensive rotation and with de Rouen being the next option and was wide open in almost the exact spot he buried one a minute prior.

I have no issues with arguing that either Tyler or Antwi be the guys to take the last shot over de Rouen but to claim they didn't run a play to get him open is off base.  I can only imagine the (rightful) criticism is Jones would have called the same play that had led to a turnover the previous possession.

Don't take this for supporting the whole game plan or anything else that happened, but the play Jones drew up for the final possession doesn't deserve criticism, especially when looking at the previous 39+ minutes.

No, that's not at all what I mean.   Hooker made a mistake on that previous possession and wasn't about to do it again.   Making him catch  the ball running away from the basket on the wing is not a good plan.  After that, it was playground time again.  If there would have been someone flashing towards the basket after he caught it for a potential layup, or a pick and roll, it may have made sense.

Omaha got exactly what they wanted; they sagged off the poorest outside shooter on the floor, UND got the ball to the open man, and he of course missed.

I never agree with his "game plans", so we're in agreement there.

  17. I was hoping to see an actual offensive play drawn up for the final possession, but I guess that was too much to ask.

So to end the game, the one time all game Hooker doesn't bring the ball up, they run a worthless screen across the free throw line to get him the ball on the wing, forcing him to the baseline with no other options, 16 feet away from the rim.  SMH

If you're going to take the ball out of his hands so he can't run the show from the point, how about running an actual play to get him open?

If you have a brain, you let him run it from the point, and set screens as he wants so he has choices.

  18. My sources tell me the esteemed Dr. McDonald was, is, and always will be against the former nickname.

He's more than likely there to ensure any new name is fully PC compliant.

The %gobc got their guy on the committee; so did the Jeanotte-heads.

I guess the pressing issue is, what's his stance on big cocks?
