  1. I would prefer no nickname, however if an animal was chosen, i'd hope for the Fighting Moose.   In cheers it'll sound as close to Sioux as we're gonna get.  Manitoba's hockey club has a cool looking Moose logo.  something similar could be designed.   I think the quest for an original animal that has never been used before is only going to yield wimpy, ugly, or otherwise unappealing beasts.

  2. Thank goodness we have alumns willing to participate in what to some is a no-win situation. Do you have any nicknames other than FIghting Sioux and No Nickname that won't "suck" in your mind?

    UND Fighting Sous Chefs.

Have the Swedish Chef from the muppets as the mascot.

  3. So you're saying that Saskatchewan shouldn't have that nickname.   Can't believe some people name their schools Washington or Lincoln, when they don't have any ties to North Dakota.  It is a nickname, not a life and death matter, and the image of a cowboy type figure certainly ties to North Dakota more than some nicknames tie to other regions.

No, that's not what I said or was referring to.  People are trying to come up with a nickname that relates to the history or heritage of North Dakota.   Rough Riders doesn't.

In a different but related vein, I can't imagine spending countless hours and mucho bucks to get all these committees together with distinguished alumni and marketing professionals, and then end up with the local high school's nickname.

  4. Teddy was a colonel, not a general. ;)

And Teddy was probably this State's greatest advocate ever. People who follow his lead and love for North Dakota would probably take on the name he gave to his followers.

    thanks- fixed!

  5. I wish people would take ten minutes to learn about who the Rough Riders were, and where they were from.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rough_Riders

Thanks.   Now, what is it that draws people to this name?   Is it the dysentery?  The Malaria?   The Yellow Fever?

Maybe it's the tragic comedy of errors their trip to Cuba involved, namely the part about leaving their horses and a 1/4 of their men at home?

Is it perhaps the closeness we as North Dakotans feel to volunteer cavalry men from Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas?

ND Tourism has done a fine job rewriting history and making people believe the Rough Riders actually had something to do with North Dakota.  They didn't.   They had a Colonel, from New York, who later became President, who had a cattle ranch here, and made comments about how much he loved North Dakota.  That's it.   That's the only albeit loose, connection.

I would prefer we stay with no nickname.   But if a new name is chosen that attempts to represent North Dakota, I would hope it would at least be factual and an accurate representation of our history.

  6. The problem is that UND fans tend to present the story as UND having chosen the Big Sky over the Summit because they preferred it to the Summit. That is, on its face, misleading or outright false.

Of course the Big Sky was preferred to the Summit. Not sure if you're aware, but the Summit doesn't offer football. Without a coinciding football conference offer, the Summit was a worthless option for UND.

Furthermore, why does what a non rival fan thinks about conferences, bother you enough to whine about it on their fan forum?

  7. Agree with your post, and your view of the negativity. No matter how you feel about Jones, it seems pretty clear by now that he'll be the HC again next year, and how this team does or does not progress in 2015-16 will determine his future. "Good job" to everyone who has conveyed their opinions to Faison via e-mail, but there's not been much new information or useful insight in many of the posts here; mostly a rehash of the same snarky, negative comments from the same posters, leaving this and most threads in the basketball forum practically unreadable.

I agree it gets rehashed a lot.  But really, what else is there to talk about?   Anyone that knows basketball realizes his teams will only go as far as their natural talent takes them.     Sounds like some promising players coming in...I suppose we could talk about that instead.

Maybe someone can start a new thread about how these newcomers will become fantastic team players that only grow and mature as players under the expert tutelage of Jones, and how his expert decision making and in game adjustments will only help them succeed as they run his effective offenses, and dominant defenses.

  8. I think most people's fear is that Jones is retained, improves enough next year to approach .500, and then stays at that level for another year or two, just like during Huff and company's career. Yes, next year's talent level should be a bit better, but I think it comes down to this--if you're Faison, how confident are you that Jones is at least close to being as capable as the average opposing coach? Sadly, after watching him for nine years, I'm not confident at all.

This is exactly the fear.    of course the team will be better next year..... how could it get any worse?!?!?!    So does Faison then look at the "improvement", and extend him again?   This is the problem with the wait and see attitude.  It's a never ending cycle of mediocrity.   It's why the big time programs with enough money to buyout contracts never allow it to get to this point.

We all know what he will do with this alleged talent coming in = nothing.   They will go as far as their raw talent will take them.

I was shocked when Jones was given his current contract.   It was a ridiculous move on Faison's part, as I can't imagine there  was a single school in the country seeking to steal Jones away from us at the time.   And right now, you couldn't give him away for a pair of Adidas shoes.

  9. A buyout may or may not end up being much of an issue. For one thing, it would be due in monthly installments, as opposed to a lump sum. Secondly, it would be reduced by any coaching income he would derive in the next two years. I'm fairly confident the contract also provides a provision that Jones would have to actively seek other employment, as well, so he couldn't just sit back and have an extended "summer of George" while collecting checks. As for the potential loss of players, that's a real possibility, although it could probably be obviated to a large degree if the next coach kept a current assistant on staff.

Maybe Jones could get a job as a Frolf (Frisbee Golf) coach?

Or maybe our very own poster Art Vandalay could get him a job in Latex.

I don't think we can worry about the level of commitment the recruits have to UND.   Getting a coach in here that actually develops talent and through his coaching ability puts the team in a position to win is more important to the overall health of the program  than the possible loss of a recruit or two.

  10. I will quit posting if Jones gets fired...if any of the trolls who think he will get fired this year have the jewels to quit posting if he does not get fired! the silence is deafening!! I know people on the inside and you obviously no nobody...that is why I know and you do not

Just because people think he should be fired, doesn't mean we think its likely. But we can dream- that's what message boards are for.

6 minutes left in first half, and no one has bothered to post on the game. Quite telling. The fanbase is becoming indifferent. It will remain this way until a change is made.

As for the game- I think I can sum it up with 4 letters: SSDD.
