USD went with junior senior portal players more ready to play division I  and are much better than we are this year but with this move they are pretty much locked in the middle ground not good enough to play now with SDSU and probably not with NDSU but they will be looking for players again next year to repeat similar performance but never reaching point where they can win conference. UND approach was to find freshman sophomores that were recruits that were considered to have high potential but went to tier 3 and 4 schools but just sat basically for year on their bench. Choosing these type of players and also finding recruits that would mesh into culture they are trying to build the program block by block given they at least three years eligibility. In theory this could be good but problem is like all recruiting there are going to be number of these players are not going to make it at this level. When we went this direction we were pretty much looking at least two years of misery before we could look to compete at higher level because your not going to win or look good playing number of freshman and sophomores.
Finally we have very limited money to attract better portal players for the basketball programs now. Like I said above  some attention is needed for basketball teams and other sports at UND. The sarcastic remarks above on my remark on facilities is part of things to bring back these sports. Also you think just going out finding big time candidates for these positions going to fix this is just matter opening up positions your going to get flood of people they are just like college recruits if things are not in place to win they are going to pass move on and for better fit. They are not going to go through 5 to 7 year rebuild lstarting from beginning it’s asking  them to risk future coaching plans with very little compensation for the amount of risk coming here. The level of pay I would be better as assistant coach at tier 4 and 5 schools then they have time to find right small mid major program they can have success in shorterm and jump to next level. This realistic view of where we’re at because we have let these programs slide to just keep up to other teams in Summit. The statement of Hockey and football consuming 95% of budget may not that far off. To run college sports to be successful now takes huge amount of money something that wasn’t here 5 years ago and until we get correction this is only going to worse when we’re seeing college players are getting paid in 100,000. To into millions that was illegal not that many years ago.

  2. The portal isn't this all you can eat buffet of quality players that you just pick and choose who you want.  The good players we all want have to actually want to come here.  And I don't think it's fair to put much of that on him at this point.  He's battling several years of embarrassing futility that he had nothing to do with.

That's it, only about 90 teams worth of players sitting in the portal?  What's the problem??

I think the NCAA Pro Football League should team up with an auction company like Steffes or Pifer’s and hold a timed online auction, where the teams can just bid on the 9000+ players that have put themselves up for sale.

He'll have a nice head start on adulthood. Some act on here like they're going go to some rinky dink U. Highly doubt it. Makes me laugh when quality education is brought up.

not at all what i was saying.  but, carry on.

Koi Perich from Gophers entering portal. Read earlier they were expecting he’d cost $1M+ and sounded like they’d pay it.  Wonder what he’ll be getting somewhere else.

I'm sure a quality education is at the top of his list.

You don't want to give, that's up to you.

But if you aren't interested in giving, please don't ever come here and complain about our lack of success on the field.

I don't like what is happening any more than you. But it isn't going to change because we think the current system is "immoral" or "wrong".

Either we adapt to the climate as it is or we get left behind. There is no third option here.

Coming from you, the SiouxSports Complainer In Chief, this is pretty rich.  If we only had a nickel for each time you said something was "unacceptable", we would be beating out Ohio State and Alabama for players.

As i said earlier, I'll continue to support in the ways i always have.   If that's not enough for you personally, i don't really care.

    Help me out here.
Where did I ask for your donation figure? I don’t care what it is cuz it’s none of my business. What was callous about my comment to what I understood was a question as to the difference in a donation to either UND or one of the NIL initiatives?  I responded “The number of zeros in your donation?”.  Maybe I’m wrong but I was thinking because NFL players are paid so much more a donation would need to be much larger (more zeros) than a check for our program.
That  is only one sentence not a paragraph, much less 2.
    What am I missing?

Apparently i misunderstood your point when you asked for the number of zeroes in my donation.  I wasn't expecting you or anyone to essentially say there is no longer any difference between professional and collegiate sports.  So in that context, i thought you were asking how large my donations were.  Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Not a personally directed comment. Just a generality: we may not like the current state of collegiate athletics, but you still have an opportunity to be generous and make a difference. Not doing so, regardless of your stance, puts UND at a competitive disadvantage.

I get what you're saying.  But i also feel this current state of college athletics is doing a bang up job of ruining the idea of amateur collegiate sports.  And if the plan is to make fans feel guilty about their teams' lack of success because they didn't give enough money to pay the athletes, well, I just think that will further alienate fans.  I appreciate your passion for UND football, but not everyone is as committed as you are.

If you want to help the cause and contribute to the success of the program/organization, then it’s reasonable to feel compelled to be generous and contribute, rather than being callous towards it.

With that said, the lack of regulation is where I (and many others) have an issue. It distorts competitive equality.  In the NFL, there is a salary cap, meaning if you did theoretically donate to the Vikings payroll to help out the Wilfs, they could still only use so much to pay the players. Right now, in college football, there is no salary cap. That lack of regulation is the priority problem right now, not the issue of student-athletes being rightfully payed some for their services/entertainment value.

I would argue Ira asking for my donation dollar figure, just because i expressed an opinion, was the "callous" comment here.   If he's going to inquire into my personal donations, I think all should be able to handle my truthful response.

Your second paragraph mirrors what i originally said; that unregulated dollars being thrown around to individuals is a net negative for college sports in general.

Zero for paying individual athletes.  Facilities, equipment, scholarships, academics, etc. are a completely different conversation.  And I will continue to donate to those causes, but I don't believe in paying individual athletes in an unregulated free for all that will be end up being a net negative for college sports in general.  So I won't.

Also,  i would sincerely like an answer to my original question.  Thanks.

There is an argument? You will get no argument from me. The portal (unfettered free agency) has ruined college sports (especially at the mid-major level) speaking from a fan/viewing perspective.

I agree.   None of it makes any sense.

Should i give the Wilfs donations to help pay Vikings player salaries?  Could someone tell me what the difference is?
