Perhaps this has been answered before, but why doesn't the Alerus rent ice making equipment and host a hockey regional? They could do the same for state hockey tournaments when the Ralph is full. There have been all sorts of stadiums that have been outfitted similarly with rented equipment, so why not the Alerus? The Alerus would be packed for two days. They bid on the Curling World Championships, why not a hockey regional?

USF doesn't have the endowment to go DI. Angie flirted with the idea when USD went, but likely couldn't get a bid. When the Dakota schools head for the Big Sky and FBS, Augie, Mankato, and Mary could replace them but would have to go non-scholarship football. The Summit has a relationship with Sioux Falls now, as Sioux Falls thinks it's a big time basketball city now after they hosted a regional on the women's side.

Another Frozen Four appearance doesn't hurt. Around 2005, each participant got $250,000 if the school was DI. UND has missed out on those payments when it was DII or transitioning. The payments may have increased by now. Edit: Tampa guarantees the NCAA $2.2.5 mill for the Frozen Four and the regional sites have to come up with at least $150 k. After the NCAA's expenses, that most of that money goes to DI participants.

Most conference officials fib big time though when talking about any school. When Coach Powers says two conferences have offered, that is much more credible. Traviola is probably telling the truth.

Moorhead didn't fully fund DII scholarships either, but they tried to fundraiser for hockey because it would have taken them over NDSU is at least one sport. Minot wants a flagship sport too, as their Northern Sun teams are bottom feeders. As posted before, they moved to DII not to compete in NSIC sports, but to position themselves for DI hockey. Don't think the NDBOHE will make them have an endowment of $37 mill for hockey, as Moorhead had to do before starting hockey.

Its up to the WCHA if they think Minot St is worth the financial risk, not us. Any new program is a risk, including UND back in the day.

Yes, WMU wants to make hockey higher profile, but it hasn't succeeded in doing that yet, either in winning or in building a new arena. Kind of a project like Ariz St. College hockey doesn't have the greed of the P5 with fb and bb, except the B1G, but money makes even the hockey world go round.

If the B1G offers, which it wont, Faison would be powerless as Schafer or Kennedy will take a second to say YES.

So W Mich is in the NCHC because of its hockey prowess? If a P5 school wants to be in your single sport conference you jump through hoops to make it happen. A P5 school will give a lot better bargaining position to affect rules and CBS Sports will demand it. The DU AD probably personally delivered the invitation herself because they and CC are so hot for Ariz St. Ariz St will give instant credibility for DU and the NCHC among non-hockey fans. UND will be for it too as it gives them more academic credibility and a very important alumni market. So Ariz St is going to be worse than CC or WMU?

Its a brand name school, which the NCHC doesn't have. The NCHC can take one chance that a good program can develop.

P.S. The WCHA will expand with Minot St, which is why they went to the Minot Daily News about fundraising for DI hockey.

Changed my mind and think the B1G will stay at seven and isn't going after Ariz St. Seven can work for the B1G, especially for their strange scheduling patterns. PLus Ariz St isn't a proven hockey program and they don't have a permanent rink yet and the B1G doesn't take rentals if more PAC12 program s appear. Furthermore, Ariz St Coach Powers was quoted as saying they have two conference offers, not three. The WCHA has officially offered Ariz St and the NCHC would certainly offer them. That leaves no offer from the B1G. The B1G can't afford another bad program and 24 conference games would be perfect so that keeps plenty of non-conference games on the schedule. Another reason is that Bowling Green wants out of the WCHA but hasn't started a CCHA with the western AHA teams. BGSU would prefer to be with Miami and W Mich in the NCHC and they will be the choice to add with Ariz St So that keeps another league from forming, which would be bad for Miami and W Mich regionally. Miami and W Mich will get another closer rival for low travel games while UND, DU, and CC will get a big name western school. Everybody will be happy in the NCHC.
