Now that UND's ncaa WIH program is gone, any chance UND starts up a club level WIH program to compete with the ndsu's of the upper great plains? Is the UND men's club hockey team still alive?

Loss of 50+ (lets just say 50 to make the math easy) students for S&D as compared to 25 students for WIH. Let's say both M&W S&D cost just as much as WIH (M&W S&D cost less, but for this purpose it'll still get the point across). So let's say M&W S&D lost $2 million per year and WIH lost $2 million per year. That means each S&D student cost UND $40,000 and each WIH student cost UND $80,000. So already, cutting S&D is less of a positive than cutting WIH. Now in addition to that cost difference, lets say UND also receives $12,000 per full-time student from the state. By those students no longer attending UND, UND will see a loss of $600,000 in revenue from the state for cutting S&D and $300,000 for cutting WIH. Under this scenario: Net savings per student by eliminating S&D = $28,000 Net savings per student by eliminating WIH = $68,000

It's sad and disappointing that we need to go to a blog to get the facts on the issue. From the numbers there, of the $210k in WIH revenue, $160k was direct institutional support (I assume that's money from UND). So really, it's $50k in revenue and the team lost closer to $2.1 million in FY 2016. Also, there is no way the $3,100 for marketing and promotion includes all the marketing and promotion expenses incurred by the REA.

So I've been underestimating it. $80,000.... Yes, EIGHTY THOUSAND DOLLARS.... per WIH player per year.

Yeah I was being sarcastic. During the Hak tenure it seemed the team had to make a post-Christmas push more often than not. Not bashing Hak, as the team was always successful in making that push.

The real loss to the university yesterday was the swimming and diving teams.

Yeah, Hak's teams never had to win games at the end of the season just to make the tourney like they did this year.

That's a lot of students. The elimination of swimming and diving will be a much bigger and more important loss to the university than the elimination of women's hockey.

I'll admit when the nickname retirement was first announced, I believe around 2010, I said to my friends that I would never donate to the university if the nickname was changed. That didn't last long.

"Quick, they're announcing sports cuts today. Let's get on the ice."

I also found that language to be puzzling. Maybe just an additional excuse to throw out there.

For the vast majority of them, I'd feel comfortable calling it "probable" rather than "possible."

I believe I've seen it reported that Alumni Foundation revenue has gone up every year since the nickname was retired (not saying donations went up because it was retired, just that they haven't gone down).

Swimming and diving could have, but you don't care about them. Dickinson has had track and field Olympians, so outside of academic qualifications, no reason UND can't do the same. Also, regarding the WIH Olympians, if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, did it make a sound?

Only men's hockey makes money right now. Sports cut in the last 15-20 years now include men's wrestling, men's baseball, men's swimming and diving, women's hockey, and women's swimming and diving. Men's golf will be cut next year, in all likelihood. President Kennedy just did what the last 2 full-time presidents were too afraid to do. He did what was necessary to put UND on the right track for the future.
