I agree with you. Plus, isn't Bocheski going to join Grant is a year or so??? Or am I thinking of someone else??? And watch out for Ryan. He is alot faster on his skates and seems to get himself in the right place at the right time - that must be in the gene pool...

You're welcome. My take on the increase is that they have raised them because they can. Let's face it: Fighting Sioux Hockey is one of the greatest aspects of the quality of life in Grand Forks and the surrounding area (we sell it to potential recruits in Fargo). It has brought more fun and good times to the area than almost anything else I can name. Hell, I left deer hunting early on opening day so I could make the Sioux/Gopher game. Now that's a powerful draw....and that's why they charge what they charge... I personally don't think students should pay more than a dollar or two for their tickets...They bring the life to the party. The school should simply charge the general public more. In fact, anyone caught sitting on their hands has to pay double....hopefully, after the great education that we received, we can afford to subsidize a future alumni's seat and create the same positive memories of UND that you and I have...Isn't that how big time athletics (and UND Hockey is BIG TIME) are justified in the first place? $28.75 a game is not too much to pay for the best seats in the house...but then, show me a bad seat at the Ralph.

The tuition is given at no additional cost to the school. It's like an employee taking a ride on a company jet when it has an open seat. The plane's gonna fly and one more person on board doesn't increase operating expenses significantly. Now, I realize that the student with an athletic scholarship does not contribute funds to the organization, but that money is not lost because the student would not contribute the money in any case (he or she would not attend the school). Room and board are another issue, but the tuition waiver does not cost the institution more money...state subsidies may not be granted for the out of state player, but I don't think that changes the fact that the costs are fixed on an institutional basis, especially when considering the total number of students enrolled. UND is not a tech school. It is, in fact, a very large institution. When the debate was on about NDSU's leap to Division 1, I heard reports that athletics do not benefit most institutions, but in fact, actually result in a net cash outlay. Most, if not all, of these "studies" included tuition costs and I do not believe that calculation is correct when it involves 200 scholarships out of 11,000 students. Of course, there are travel and other out of pocket expenses associated with athletics, but I'll bet ticket revenue far exceeds those actual, out of pocket expenses including room and board. Therefore, anytime someone tells you that the tuition waivers "cost" the department money, they are talking about an accounting entry only. For all practical purposes, the institution is whole...that is one of the reasons why athletic scholarships are limited - they are virtually free and very easy to give away...There may be other, justifiable reasons, but tuition cost is not the reason for the increase in ticket prices - those costs do not exist for the institution as a whole.

As I recall, we paid a dollar (or something like that) in 79-83. We'd line up at the student union a day or two before the game and get our tickets...and they were general admission in the student section (again, as I recall). I do know for a fact that the teams we had then were nothing short of GREAT...in the finals all four years...won two national championships...Chorney, Sykes, Murray, Eaves...I can't even begin a list...

It must be me...every team I support goes down in a game they should win... AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't get your point since at no time did Denver outplay UND during that game they way the are outplaying UMD today...
-
It's very painful to listen to this and hear Denver giving it up...I hope UMD continues to blow them off the ice...

Guys: I got this note from Sid: "Rex, April Fools !!!!". Thought you'd like to know.

Yeah, Minnesota wins a couple in a row after a nearly quarter century drought. Congratulations again...Let's hope it's at least that long again...

I think ZPar's comments were his way of finding a silver lining...plus, if you've ever been quoted, you know your words are usually a bit out of context. We don't know the question asked. It could have been phrase like this: "Geez, getting picked up by the Devils, while not making it any better, has got to take some of the sting out of the Denver loss and give you another chance to play this Spring" to which Parise answers "If we'd still been playing, there would have been two weeks left in the [collegiate] season, and the [stanley Cup] playoffs would have started. It kind of worked out for the best" ... So unless you were there, it's hard to read anything into a conversation (even tho I just did in this scenario)....

He should take #17 as in the Number 17th pick overall...

Devils v. Flyers game preview on NHL.com states that "help is on the way in the form of Zach Parise who signed Monday". Pretty nice to see that people are looking forward to his arrival in the NHL...UND is prominently mentioned and associated with him...great for recruiting the next Zach...
-
I'm glad for him. I'm also looking forward to watching the remaining guys and the new guys step up. If my memory serves me correctly, the Sioux played pretty well while Zach, Brady and Drew were at the World Juniors...they all had to contribute and play a team game. Also, I remember that earlier this year in one of the funniest posts ever, Junior Lessard was declared the Savior, the son of God...

To me, there is a difference between roughing in the corner after a puck and dropping your gloves in the middle of the ice 50 feet from the puck. When MEN get into a corner and start shoving and working for the puck, tempers will elevate - it's an emotional game. But for me, there is a huge disconnect and lack of professionalism when you can't get control of your emotions minutes after the close contact is over. To Wit: If you're standing there thinking about when you are going to get your chance to slug ZPar (or whoever you want to name), you can bet you're not doing your job to keep him from scoring...You can also bet that ZPar didn't spend much time thinking about getting even for something that happened last game or even something that happened five minutes before - he concentrated on his job and what was happening at that moment - that's what makes him so much better than others - he stays focused on the here and now and stays in the game...

I could not have said this better....

I personally had hoped that Parise would stay on, especially since he'll be carrying Saturday's loss in his gut for a long time. But I knew he was too good and would have to move on. That's what he needs to do. This is why I wore my Devils jersey to the last home game - I sit right behind the bench - and I wanted to pay tribute to Zach. He is a special player and has increased my interest in this game to an even higher level. He is a total class act and will make an immediate impact on the team. Mark my word, if he plays this year, he will adjust quickly and he will score goals and make assists. You all saw how he dominated whenever he was on the ice. Get ready for more of the same. I'm looking forward to next year tho - Just look at what we still have???...Brady Murray has incredible wheels and hockey smarts. He has improved nearly every game. He will be a bigger star next year...and a hobey candidate. Stafford isn't going anywhere. Developmentally, he's not where ZPar was at this time last year. It would be a mistake for him. He could benefit from another year.

they can have their bias, the WCHA will take the hardware...

All the way to the Final Four anyway, then I'm out...Go Sioux!!!
-
Vote Parise....Early and Often

With regard to whether JPar can handle it, I'll bet we're going to find out next year...I agree with you, I thought Brandt did a good job in the 1st period - I told my wife the score should have been 4 - 1. The failure to clear the puck and fateful turnovers cost them the game. I was telling a friend that I think this is first time they have given up 5 goals all year. Usually when they score 4 or more goals they win, period. Is there a fun bus going to Colorado Springs from Grand Forks???
-
Did you see the Ryan Potulny interview last night between the 2nd and 3rd periods??? What a great kid. Poised and humble citing his "fresh legs" as a key reason for his late season success. I'm sure he worked hard in the weight room and that has really helped him too. I'm happy for him, even if he is a Gopher ...and he does have an incredibly quick and pin-point accurate shot, as demonstrated last night on UofM's fourth goal...The Sioux better take care of him and better do a better job of clearing out the front of the net than UMD did last night, that's for certain. (I felt sorry for IR last night...Gophers standing unattended in front of the net constantly...)
-
After Zack Parise "bumped" King (the tape clearly indicates he was attempting to avoid a collision) and the fists started flying, Zack simply skated toward his brother, kept him back, and then he did what I thought was an amazing thing for someone so "young" - He picked up King's stick and brought it to him...Zack is a class act who understands the bigger picture...Mark my word - He will be a superstar in the NHL.
-
Gilbert's article leaves out a few important details the most important of these - Both UMD and UND will make the NCAA Tournament regardless of the outcome of this weekend...I don't think that was true for UND last year so his parallel of this season to last is simply not there.

How about: Welcome to St. Paul's tribute to concrete..... and maybe put under it: Where's the Leather??

I'll be there if my tickets come thru...
