  1. Well up comming weekend if you ask me is going to a wild weekend when the BADGERS vs the SIOUX.  I would like to know what the pannel of experts think of this up comming series?  I say the SIOUX will sweep.  What do you think?

    Gater,

Here is what I see. The bagders will come in and try to slow down the Sioux, face it not many teams are going to be able to keep up with UND's Speed (teams like C.C. Denver UM are probably the few teams that can) They are going to clutch grab and hold, it is going to be brutal hockey. Our luck we will get Don Adam and he won't call the hooking and holding. Its going to look more like All Star wrestling than hockey.

Wisconsin has two great goalies and on of them will play on top of its head one game. I still think UND will be the winner but it will be a hard fought series. Wisconsin is a horrible team this season but I don't think that mattters when they are playing the Sioux. I woujld also lke to see this class of freshman/sophmores to have a winning record against the dirty Badgers. Unlike the past senior classes.

Badgers we don't need no stinking Badgers...

Its also time for UND to take its pound of flesh...

  2. This will help open things up for ZP. Seems to me our friends down I-95 have more of a depth issue than the Sioux.

So are we referring to buddies in Mpls, or Boston :D:0:0

He,he,he... Thats ok, the rubes in New York think Cornell has a decent hockey team too. Yesh :0

Defensively UND looks really good, even though some claim that we don't have a defenseman that can hanble the puck, sure we don't have a Travis Roach, but we look pretty damb good, in fact i believe that the UND defensive core is more solid than 2000 crew, no kidding, and no I am not drunk either. If you look at these players below, Sneaks and Mazurak couldn't hold any of the following players jocks...

Everyone talks about Zack staying all four years, I think it is going to be tough to Keeping all four of our solid defensemen for four years.

Andy Schider is an awesome puck handler and a great defensemanand he can check great. Definately has the potential to play in the NHL. Mean streak and can hold his own... In 11 games he has 3 g's 8a's for 11 points. Good for a point a game.

Matt Greene is a Commodore type player with a better up side, Matt skates better than Commodore. He also doesn't have the folk hero following yet. The UAA Rube that he challenged for a fight after he cheaped Zack wanted nothing to do with him.

Matt Jones played solid all season and definately is a good defensive player. Great stay at home defenseman.

David Hale was crushing people and playing great solid defense. I love when he plays defense with the crash line of Cannady, Genoway and Prpich. They thump people...

Fuher looked really good and is not affraid to pound anyone that get near Zack.

  3. Another sore spot with the UofM fans. Of course they claim its not because they got Hirsch but I like the fact that some good kids are coming to UND from there. No matter where they come from. Except from Russia. :0

I don't know about anyone else but I beginning to feel that UND is going to return to the top and stay there for some time if we keep landing these top kids. ;):0:0:0;);););):D:0;)

I smell a couple of titles in the future...

  4. 2. Herb Brooks says he had a lot to do with Zach Parise coming to UND.

I suppose the Gophers fan will be calling for Brook's head now after seeing that in the press. In fact a few of them are a little sensative about not getting him...

  5. I actually think UND should (I am an optomist) Route UAA. And a split or being swept is not a option. I sound like some of our buddies down in MPLS. p :0:0 :0

I hope that the boys can win and win big. The REA needs to become a hostile place for the opposition to come to. :D

I am excited because it will be my first chance to see the team this season.

  6. Hey Goon, what do you just sit around waiting for my post. That was quick!!   :D

Yep, I was sitting around waiting for your post in addition to watching my fantasy football team take a crap again. Add to that the Vikes suck again this weekend. The Sioux win is the only thing good that has happened to me this weekend.

  7. What a bunch of whiners. I thought that the Sioux fans had class but after reading the comments here and seeing the fans at last nights Sioux victory I guess they are no different than gopher fans. Blame the officals when you lose, cry and throw things when you are behind, belittle your opponents and gloat when you win. Adams was brutal to both sides both nights. End of story!!

Huskie I was woundering when you were going to make your appearance. :D

  8. Since this has turned into a referendum on Coach Dahl, I can chip in with my opinion that I have no problem with the guy. I think I have probably said just about the same thing before - the junior-senior league thing.

I also think it's pretty amazing that the SC program is where it is; there's really no reason it should be any more successful than Ferris, Miami, Western Michigan, UAA, Michigan Tech or any non-major school. But they are pretty consistently near the top now. I also think it's safe to like him there, in much the same way I didn't mind Woog staying at MN.

    But that's just my opinion.

You know your right, I guess you have a point, I kind of like the job he is doing for SCSU, 0-5 for the national tourney. to me that is pretty good. :D

Happy with just making the NCAA's if thats all they want to accomplish that is fine with me. :0

  9. Scary to think what he might teach in a ref school. Radio said he came out of retirement.

Now I feel better, it sucks to be us when he is officiating the game, Adam, slowed the flow of the game down with his parade of player to the penalty box...

  10. It might be safe to assume that James Massen has arrived and will live up to the billing that he came here with. I think James kind of reminds me of a former Bruins Player Cam Bam Neely. I know its early in his career, I love a big power forward who can score and hit.

Three goals in three games not too bad eh?

  11. Wew, what a great win, I was dancing around my hotel room.

Siembieda beter tonight. 17/19 and a .894 save percentage. I can deal with that.

Zach comes back strong for two more points. What a great night. Now UND can hopefully get on a run. 7-1. Not too bad...

I think the Defense has really played better this season.

  12. I was not at the game, but I have to agree with Goon, Hennesey tried to give Adams the benifit of the doubt and stated that maybe a Sioux player pushed the Hu"squad" player into the net. Unfortunatley for Adam there was TV coverage. After reviewing the replay Hennesey had to bite his tongue, radio must have a no comment clause of sorts as well. I especially appreciated the call of Hennesey just before the scsquad breakaway, Parise is tackled, losses the puck, its passed up ice........

So that was the deal, I wounder if the radio has been put on notice not to criticize the refs but I think someone needs to look into Donny Adams performance on the ice.

And another thing I thought that Adam was giving up reffing to run a officating school. I guess all bets are off now...

  13. Well, guess what? Every college goalie faces those situations. What sets the good goalies apart from the average or poor goalies is their ability to make saves in tough spots and their ability to limit soft goals. Look what Moreland did for SCSU last night. Look what Jensen did for Mankato.

But if the Sioux goalies give up a couple of softies each game and the opposition scores on a high percentage of its good opportunities, UND better prepared to score one hell of a lot of goals because that's what it will take to win.

    PCM is right.

    Here are the numbers.

    10/12/02 Michigan 4 15 63:27 W

    10/26/02 Niagara 0 4 19:04 N

    11/01/02 @ Princeton 2 20 60:00 W

    11/02/02 @ Yale 3 26 60:00 W

    11/08/02 @ St. Cloud State 5 13 43:31 L

    TOTALS Goales 14 Shots 78 246:02 3-1-0

Transulates to a .820 save percentage... Boy that is really good.

    Here is Jakes Impressive Numbers.

    10/11/02 Canisius 0 18 60:00 W

    10/25/02 Niagara 4 10 60:00 W

    10/26/02 Niagara 3 9 40:56 W

    11/08/02 @ St. Cloud State 2 5 16:29 N

    TOTALS Goals 9 Shots 42 177:25 3-0-0

That Translates to a .785 save percentage.

Yep that is not very impressive. Your right the goal tending sucks.

There is no more hey they are young, and they need to be given a chance, they have been give a chance.

Here is I what I think Blaiser needs to do. Next season, cut one or if not both of these goalies. Starting next season. First off I would Cut Sofie (dead weight) and then make a decision on Brandt or Sievbedia or both. Have a competition, like the pros the ones that can make the team get to stay and the other get cut. These two goalies don't deserve scholarships. Bring In Lane at the half way point if it doesn' t get any better. He can't be any worse. Then recruit one or two more tenders and see if we can't get someone that can makes save at at least a 900 save percenatge. Like I said before UND is a top program in hockey we should be able to find a good goalie and its not asking too much to expect our team to have a good goalie...

    Here are the nations leaders.

    1 Yann Danis, Jr, BN 2 1.000

    2 Mike Brown, So, FSU 9 .959

    3 Jim Howard, Fr, ME 4 .949 <A Freshman>

    Bobby Goepfert, Fr, PC 3 .949 <A Freshman>

    5 Matt Migliaccio, So, MSU 6 .935 <A Sophmore>

Jamie VandeSpyker, Sr, FIND 5 .935

    7 Mike Walsh, Sr, CKN 3 .933

Dave LeNeveu, So, COR 2 .933

Jake Moreland, Sr, SCSU 4 .933

    10 Jason Jensen, Jr, MANK 5 .930

There is no reason we should not have a goalie in those stats...

PCM is right UND is going to have to score goals at a rate to 7-8 goals a game to win. If the want to win...

  14. Isn't it good to know that the WCHA is cracking down on interference this season? :D

Here is my problem. Everytime Don Adam does a game he seems to have it in for UND and calls UND a ton of penalties and the oppostion gets away with murder. I am sorry but I have watched enough games to see that this is happening.

I think the league needs to look into this and maybe think about not letting Adam reffing UND games. Especially after he made that comments about Commodore. Its eveident last night that I guess the SCSU player rams the Goalie and SCCC still gets the goal. What kind of crap is that? Biased officiating.

To add to this Dahl better enjoy his little run I no doubt in my mind that UND is going to be clobbering some team bad the next couple of years...

  15. Here is a letter a buddy sent me.

I guess Josh didn't play too bad...

However, evertime I hear there is a break away, I bet the score board operator is already getting ready to put up another goal. Its brutal... If I was one of the leaders I would take the young goalies off to the side and tell them to suck it up and start playing. I Blais gets some more goalies next season. I think if Josh or Jake doesn't improve they should be sent down the river. Sorry I think it has to be done... Goalies should be expected to have a .900 save percentage to be a starting goalie in the WCHA. Right now they are not...

    Hey Goon,

What a treat tonight! The North Dakota at St.Cloud game was on TV in Bemidji. Channel 45 out of the Cities. Despite what you might read in the papers, your young goaltender Siembida didn't play that bad. Your defense let you down early in the third. St. Cloud got a couple of quality scoring chances because our "D" got caught and hung your goalie out to dry! It was tied to start the third.

  16. This why I have no respect for this program. Dahl the other day, says oh if Zack scores 50 points this season hell be gone, sounds like he is begging. #uck you Dahl. Dahl gets his players to win now, but chockes when it matters the most.

    College hockey: Huskies hammer UND

    By Kevin Allenspach

    kallenspach@stcloudtimes.com

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The reason North Dakota was ranked fifth this week is because no one had been able to stop the Sioux, and especially wunderkind Zach Parise.

    Until now.

The Sioux ran smack dab into seniors Ryan Malone and Jon Cullen, both of whom returned after missing games the past two weekends with injuries, and the 15th-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies blasted North Dakota for a 7-3 victory Friday night at the National Hockey Center.

Malone had a hat trick and two assists and Cullen scored a goal and set up four others. They figured in three of four third-period goals that broke open a 3-3 tie. And when they weren't making both Sioux goalies look bad, they combined with senior Joe Motzko to hold Parise and his linemates Brandon Bochenski and Quinn Fylling pointless and a combined minus-8.

"I know (Parise) - he's a great kid," said Malone, who went to Shattuck-St. Mary's - the same prep school that produced Parise, who had a nation-leading 20 points entering Friday's game. "Obviously, he's got a lot of skill. But he hasn't played a team like ours and, as seniors, it's our last year. You don't want a young guy to come in and embarrass us on our home ice. We tried to limit their chances - that whole line. All we wanted to be was plus-1 or plus-2 against them and have some other guys chip in. It worked out a little better than that."

    Yah.

Malone and Cullen fell one point short of the school record of six points in a game - a trick turned by five players. The only one in school history to do it against a WCHA team was Fred Knipscheer on Dec. 5, 1992, against Colorado College.

And Motzko, almost forgotten in the equation, had a goal and two assists.

"You don't expect to score all the goals we had, but that was the game plan - we went against their (top) line," said Cullen, back from a shoulder injury. "A lot of times when lines like that score a lot, they're susceptible defensively. We played good defense first and everything else after that we'll take as a bonus."

The only other St. Cloud State goal scorer was freshman defenseman Tim Conboy, who connected on two third-period slap shots.

St. Cloud State holds a 21-6 scoring edge in the last three games against the Sioux - all at the Hockey Center, where St. Cloud State hasn't lost to North Dakota since Nov. 28, 1998.

"Their first line played really, really well," Sioux junior defenseman David Hale said. "I don't know what it is but the scores have been similar the last few times we've been down here. Maybe it's a curse or something. We'll turn it around (today). The character we have on this team is going to show up (today). It's going to be interesting to see how we come out."

North Dakota, missing four players sitting out a one-game suspension from a fight last Saturday, suffered its first loss of the season. And Parise had never been held to fewer than two assists - until his WCHA debut Friday.

Just listen to this idiot. Classic Dahl...

"People can say all they want - it's a junior-senior league," said Huskies coach Craig Dahl, whose team won its fourth consecutive win over the Sioux - dating to the 6-5 overtime win in the 2001 WCHA championship game. "Unless you're a real blue-chipper, you've got to pay your dues. Juniors and seniors seem to dominate nine times out of 10. This was a great performance by our older players. You've got to have them in the lineup. It's critical."

Another senior who had to come up big was goalie Jake Moreland, who was a stickboy for the Sioux when he grew up in Grand Forks. St. Cloud State was outshot for the first time this season, 43-25. Despite a couple of soft goals, he slammed the door on 15 shots in the third period.

"You can let up a soft one like all goalies will, but then you've got to come back and battle and be mentally tough," Dahl said. "We talked about that this week, and we talked about it after the first 40 minutes. I told him 'Dude, that 40 minutes is over. Let's worry about the next 20.' He got the job done."

The Huskies gave a crowd of 6,479 fans, their 31st consecutive sellout, reason to feel good 31/2 minutes into the game when Motzko deked around a Sioux defenseman and wristed a shot over goalie Josh Siembida. Malone then scored on a delayed penalty. Motzko was checked into the net, where he lodged against Siembida, just before Malone's shot hit the top left corner.

North Dakota clicked on the power play early in the second period, but Malone responded with a highlight-reel goal. A Sioux drop pass went awry at the Huskies blue line and Motzko kept the puck away from a North Dakota forechecker long enough to find Malone streaking down the right wing. Malone took the pass, which was behind him, and brought the puck ahead between his legs. He skated in and beat Siembida low before skidding into the left post.

The Sioux added unassisted and power-play goals to tie it. But the Huskies blew the doors open with four goals in an eight-minute span early in the third. Malone scored his third goal on a breakaway, and then gave a Captain Morgan salute as the hats rained on the ice.

"Not playing last weekend (was a motivating factor)," said Malone, who suffered a hip injury two weeks ago. "Watching the (pregame introductions) last weekend was hard. On the road, missing games doesn't seem like such a big deal. Here, you miss being out there with the crowd getting into it.

"(Tonight) is a whole new game, though. They're going to have (senior forward Kevin) Spiewak and (junior forward Ryan) Hale out there. I know Spiewak from Omaha (where Malone played in the USHL) and I know Hale from juniors, too.

"I'm sure they're going to be jacked up."

  17. Keys to UND becoming a good team that has a chance to finish in the top three of the WCHA

    1. Get good goaltending

    2. Have a goaltender step up and play well

    3. Find a goaltender

    That is all.

If they can just get good consistant, goaltending they'll be tough to beat. With bad goaltending though they are in big trouble. :D

    Add

    4. Stay out of Penatly Box...

  18. He really did this?  Seems out of character for Blais, at least IMO.

Seems more Woog like to me. :D  :0

Blais did that in a playoff game at home a couple of years back. He banged a stick on the boards and got a penalty. He I like that fact that the coach shows some emotion...

Ah Woog would gotten into a argument with the Fans and had a drink poured on his head. Woog would have put $500.00 in a hat. opps...

PCM, I agree the Goal Tending Sucks.

  19. Noticed that Adam and Schmitt (MN/Kato) called lots of penalties while Mason (CC/UAA) and Sheppard (MDU/Denver) called few. At any rate, with the new emphasis on obstruction penalties, may be a year that sees very little 5 on 5.

It your typical Don Adam Game, call a lot of Penalties against UND and let the opposition get a bunch of Penatlies to put the game away.

Hennesy said that Adam let a lot of the Obstruction go....

I think Don Adam has something personal for the Blaiser and that is wrong...

  20. The Sioux are a little snake-bit by the NHC. 3rd embarrassing loss in a row. I agree with you, jk, that this year they just look better. More offensive movement, scoring potential. It just didn't happen this evening.

Taz, I am going to make a prediction, for Blais-UND. There is going to be some retribution for for the last three games at the Concrete Center, just a hunch. If I were the coach at UND when (its going to happen) we get up on SCSU, and we will leave the top power play line in and run up the score, like they have done the last couple of games. I think Craig Dahl is a joke. When your up by a lot you don't put your top power play line in. Also Dahl is not fit to carry Dean's Jock Strap... I hate losing to a $#it like SCCC.

This is a set back for UND, sure the Goal Tending is brutal how can you blame the boys. Next season I would recruit a couple of Goalies out of fear. I would also send one of the young goalies packing, I am sick of their performance, they havn't played one good game all season. Want to see what a good goalie does see Jensens performance from last night.

I am sick of this horrible goal tending. Josh is a bust and Brandt is a head case. I would also bring in Lane if he continues to play decent at the half way point, I can't hurt. I am sick of Josh's and Brant lack a dazial attitude. I see UND going further than SCSU this season. We may even win tonight. We are a first rate organization I have a hard time believing we can't get a good goalie. Unexceptable...

  21. Katie is a law student at UND and I believe did an internship in washington last summer. Although nice to look at I agree with a few of the other posters, maybe we can get her to move on and we can find a hockey mind to do the on ice interviews...
