And here we are, back at the essential question that has been hashed and rehashed over and over again: Are NCAA titles important at all? And if they are, how important? Old Time Hockey made some very fair points and (as usual) gets blasted for it. Mid-major programs (Bemidji State, RIT) are probably satisfied with "just getting there". But we are NOT a mid-major program and I will never accept a label like that. Ever. I am as excited as anyone else for this team and what they have accomplished this season. But the lack of success at the Frozen Four is a valid topic for discussion. This might be the year this whole topic gets buried for good, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens. We can't expect Gothberg to do what he did last night all the time; the whole team will have to play better if we are going to get two wins in Philly. And then we can table this whole discussion, which I will be grateful for.

What he was getting at was the national championship is determined in a 16 team tournament, not by which team had the best winning percentage during the regular season. And that is what most people remember.

It seemed like a lot of people were obsessed with geography and weren't talking enough about the issues you talked about in this post. Bus leagues are almost a thing of the past across the board, so I think we need to focus on those other issues.

If geography was as important as everyone thinks it is, all the Dakota schools would still be Division 2 and the NCC wouldn't have folded. Having said that, I think FBS is a fools errand for all four Dakota schools. NDSU won't always be this dominant in FCS and would struggle if their whole schedule were FBS teams from year to year. FCS is where the Dakotas belong.

We did this in 2001 (the first season in the Alerus Center) and it worked out pretty well.

And what was it we are measuring again.....I can't quite remember. Honestly, I take measurements like this with a big block of salt. You cannot quantify something as qualitative as higher education.

Over time, it will become more of an issue. It happened with the men's program in the 1980's and 90's and it eventually caught up with them. This year's runner-up finish is the law of averages kicking in, but it's possible the players subconsciously started thinking it was in the bag and that might have been a factor in the loss. Btw, I wonder if they'll put a mural of their "Runner-Up" finish next to their championship murals?

I believe that was 2006, the same year St. Cloud and Minnesota had their epic semifinal game; 8-7 St. Cloud in OT. Then we beat a tired St. Cloud team for the title on Saturday night.
