  1. First game is always a tone setter -- just remember last year's game against Wyoming.

I'm a bit nervous for this ball game. Both teams want to play the same style and Stony Brook has the homefield advantage.

First games usually come down to the basics/fundamentals (blocking, tackling, turnovers, and penalties) due to limited chemistry/timing

If UND plays disciplined like a veteran team, which in some aspects they are, then the Hawks should leave New York with a hard fought win.

Of course, I hope for a lopsided score in UND's favor but not sure how realistic that is; will have to see this version of Bubba Ball in an actual game before judging that for future contests.

Schlossman references the potential personal biases of those in the committee, and with that, I figure it is appropriate to point out the possible personal biases of Schlossman and his article, as well. Obviously, women's hockey is one of the two primary sports that Schlossman covers, and with that, it is hard to imagine he can objectively assess the viability of women's hockey at UND. Yes, it would be ideal if those within the athletic department, whom Schlossman adores, could make the decisions on their own; however, the entire University of North Dakota is the ultimate sponsor for the athletic department. Furthermore, questionable decisions have been made by Faison and the department in the past, providing reason for wholesale assessment.

Difficult decisions will have to be made. UND certainly over-funds some sports (relative to national average figures and potential growth models), and although there will be several disagreements during the process, the ultimate goal should be to better focus the resources. What is so wrong with using contemporary data on regional counterparts in order to formulate athletic department funding models? Sponsoring niche sports is unique, but is it really practical? How does the University of North Dakota define practical? Perhaps in growing the University's prospective student interest and current student-athlete extracurricular accomplishments, and if that's the case, then certain sports need to be further emphasized. I think it is safe to say many know which sports those are; if you are having a difficult time, look at the regional universities with similar enrollment/budget numbers as UND.

It is far too early to criticize President Kennedy, in my opinion. I do appreciate and wholeheartedly agree with this statement from his letter to the UND IAC:

    Quote

"Two strong factors frame this issue, requiring a careful balancing between them.

First, that competitive athletic programs offer many strategic benefits to a university. They not only provide amazing development experiences for our student athletes, but as St. John's Football Coach John Gagliardi was fond of saying, they also provide a front porch to a university that invites others to peek in at the wonderful things inside the house (our academic offerings). While I was primarily attracted to St. John's University and the University of Michigan for their solid academic offerings, their athletic renown was also a factor. I suspect the same is true for many of our students.

Secondly, we must have an athletics program that we can afford and that is held to operating within defined funding metrics."

We had both in the early 2000's when I was a student and it was great.

I don't want to start a hockey vs football thread as I attend games for both teams despite living 1,000 miles away but with the current setup neither program is going to bring the national recognition.  NDSU has won five straight FCS titles and ESPN still ignores them on a consistent basis.

I think it comes down to who brings in the most money to help fund the other sports in the athletic department.  Hockey may have hit its max but it still seems like it is bigger than football ever will be as far as funding.

I do not agree. Did you catch ESPN's coverage last night? Quite good for that University and football program, I'd say.

How about FCS national title coverage and the Wentz coverage?

  4.  Good ball game last night with NDSU  and Charleston Southern. All you can ask for is a close game in the Fargodome these days and last night's game certainly delivered that. My pregame prediction was it would be another blowout for NDSU; there's not very many FCS teams that can handle the crowd noise there. Give Charleston Southern credit for playing tough.

Good game.  One dimensional teams don't fair well in Fargo.  CSU won't be a playoff team this year.

FU vs EWU should be pretty good in a couple weeks.

    Glad the season is here.

Charleston Sourhern won't be a playoff team?

I disagree, although anything is possible this early.

About 19:45 into the video he talks about the UND 'Fighting Eagles'...at least he credits the defensive strength and places UND at #10.

Embarrassingly poor. Im happy UND is getting their due recognition, but the research ability of some of these "media types" is questionable at best.

  7. I've been somewhat skeptical of the music choices and entrance song/video/lights over the past few seasons. I will be easily pleased if I can at least notice some effort has been put into these areas for 2016.

Considering the hype surrounding this program (there hasn't been this much since at least the championship seasons), I would certainly expect UND and the Alerus Center to put in some new wrinkles to please the crowd, especially with the emphasis on "Pack the Alerus".

    I have a better idea:

    1. Have Santiago gain 5.5 yards per carry so we never see 3rd down on offense.
    2. Take the ball away from the other team on 1st or 2nd so they never see 3rd down.

    Easy-peasy. :D

Why would they play a song when the UND offense is facing a 3rd down? Seems a bit counterintuitive in terms of home field advantage.

I'll take noise for the UND defense. Let's keep it silent when UND has the ball -- you can cheer *WHILE* Santiago is running into the end zone.

    Otherwise, I love your ideas!

The author is Brad Reed aka mr.titleist.  an Wyoming fan and grizzley fan.  Just to refresh your memory of his prediction in the UND vs UW game.

    Brad Reed, Wyonation.com

    Pokes Pick: Cameron Coffman, QB

His first start in Laramie and he’s going to make a statement that he’s going to be the man to lead this team to victories this year. He was named a captain of this football team and he’ll take that very seriously by taking a part the North Dakota defense in the home opener. Honorable mention: Shaun Wick, 125 yards and two scores is what I’m hoping for!

    The Cowboys win if…

They control the football with Wick and Hill in the backfield. Limit the turnovers of the offense. Play disciplined defense. That’s basically the recipe to win every football game this year, but we’ll go ahead and use it this week and see how it goes. Also, they’ll probably win if they have more points on the scoreboard (I was channeling my inner @FauxPelini with that).

    Game Prediction:

Three touchdown tosses from Cameron Coffman, two rushing touchdowns from Wick. Eddie Yarbrough grabs a couple of sacks. 24,000 in the stands. Wyoming 45 North Dakota 13

Pretty embarrassing for this Brad Reed character. I advise he takes a step back and changes his prediction strategy ... or just quit altogether.

    Go UND!

Really?  Wow.  You people are more delusional than I thought.

Maybe people on AGS just dont sugarcoat it.  UND still has a long way to go. Sorry to be the one to have to give you the heads up.

    Watch and learn.

    Go Hawks

do either or both arnell and taj start game one at their positions from last year?

Very good question. I am not sure.

Palmborg and Bakker/Rodgers are competing right there with those two.

Nevertheless, from a fan standpoint, you have to love the depth that is developing.

  12. Increasing football coverage is pivotal.

I'm happy to hear about the new additions by Midco in that regard.

The weekly football program and signing day coverage will help better expose the program to the local casual fans.

Intriguing development out of UND Football.

(I'm assuming a lot in the next paragraph) Looks like UND will be getting an important insurance policy for next year to keep Boatman's RS intact if Studs can't go for whatever reason.

Former Hawaii Rainbows and Montana Griz QB Eric Prater (Lake Havisu City, Ariz., 6-2, #205) should be a school start addition to the Fighting Hawks roster. Prater, a former Special OPS Army Ranger, will have to sit this year out under NCAA transfer rules, but could be ready to back up Studs next season and maybe take the reigns fulltine in 2018, if his play merits it.  He should have two more years of eligibility

One more interesting side note. Prater was supposed to be the starter against UND last year until he got hurt in practice in the week leading up to the game. This paved the way for Simmons to take the field in lieu of Gustafson.

Interesting. Brock Boltman looks like a good quarterback prospect, but it is important to have overall good competition at the quarterback spot; Eric Prater should add to that competition.

Very happy to hear about the coaching staff addressing the depth at QB after last season. Need to continue to grow ALL positions for this program to continue improving.

Upset???? Hmmm... Ok!?  Und is currently favored.

Stony is no slouch tho,  plus it's their home opener so expect them to have a few more things go their way then und. The inexperienced o line will be heavily tested in this game as Stony has a stout d line, one of which is being closely watched by the nfl.  I cannot vision either team scoring 20 points which bodes well for und with a grind out style and look for a game that whoever makes the least mistakes will likely win.  Und 17-13

By all accounts, UND's offense has been looking good thus far in fall camp. Of course, that is reliant on the offensive line being healthy and having the expected starting 5 actually start the game in Stony Brook.

Game will be a bit of a defensive battle, but I expect UND to win by a touchdown or two. I'll go with 28 - 14 UND as my way too early prediction (I reserve the right to change my prediction during game week).

Tom Miller is really stepping it up and he is doing a great job with his range of coverage this year. Keep it coming Tom!

I agree with you. The coverage has been great this summer and fall. Everyone has a role to play in getting the Alerus Center regularly sold out!

    Keep it up, Tom!
