Can we please get an all season long video series on the football team? Opening Drive was good but was only during fall camp.

I agree. I would much appreciate UND Athletics emphasizing UND football with a season long series, much like what they do with their beloved hockey program and "Through These Doors". I think such a series would only help to increase the popularity of football in Grand Forks and the surrounding region.

I didn't realize that gray was now a school color.

1970s UND football. Consider this throwback/classic. I would like to see a black set (helmet/jersey/pants) also though. It's a school color and it is more appealing to recruits (i.e. Blackout games).

As someone who is a die hard Michigan football fan I can tell you it's widely known that Michigan left millions on the table to get away from Adidas.  They've had issues such as the student body/athletes not wanting Adidas, Adidas screwing up their school colors, and uniforms literally falling apart during games.

"According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, Nike was actually the lowest bidder for the rights to be U'M's official outfitters."

Whether people want to admit it or not Adidas has a MAJOR perception problem in the States.  Nike is far and away the most popular provider followed by UA.  Adidas is in a distant third.

Im firmly of the opinion that any apparel deal is better than no deal at all. I'm thankful UND is at least consistent now in wearing Adidas gear.

Green helmet with grey and grey would look pretty nice. Old school grey helmet white jersey grey pants would be interesting. Green grey green? Maybe. Grey green grey?

As I mentioned earlier, grey helmet, green jersey, and grey pants would look the sharpest in my opinion.

I'm fine with it since we used gray/silver back in the day and had great teams.

Exactly, this could be looked at as more of a throwback than a new age change up. Looking forward to the helmet(s) now.

Is that the green ND and the white Fighting Hawk on the left shoulder?  Looks awfully similar to what Eastern Michigan has worn in recent seasons.

    2013-eastern-michigan-football-uniform-6

No, same shoulder stripping pattern as current green and white adidas jerseys.

  7. New alternate gray uniforms for this season.

They look nice. Now add a nice gray helmet with green/white striping down the middle and it will look beautiful. I personally want to see the old 70s combo of gray helmet, green jersey, and gray pants -- I think that combination would be my favorite.

    Hey all,

Thanks to Siouxfan512 for the invite to your board.  We are looking forward to having the ND Fighting Sioux at Doyt Perry Stadium on 9/10!  Hope to see some of you there and please stop by our tailgate area in Lot 13, just south of the stadium.  We are a fun bunch and pretty passionate about our Falcons.  Yeah, we have our ahole fans too but they are few.  lol.

We open at ohio state on 9/3 and that is a huge game for our program.  Urban Meyer got his first head coaching job at the collegiate level at BGSU in 2001.  Have a great season!  If you'd like to check out our board, please go to www.ay-ziggy-zoomba.com.  GO FALCONS!

    Michael

    aka Falconfreak90

Thanks for stopping by! Feel free to talk all the football you want here!

By the way, It's University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks now, due to a long drawn-out process. I look forward to the game this season on September 10th.

Have to remember, more than half of the school caught the tail end of the Mussman era and the first year of Bubba ball, but still not great. Up until the end of last year, football was still largely ridiculed (from what I saw as a student.) Not to mention, not a whole lot of people found the ground and pound style exciting ( i know I heard multiple times "when are they gonna throw the ball???")  I would expect that football is a big thing on campus next year with all but one class not knowing Mussman and those dark years. I know my group of friends is super pumped.

Great news. As I've mentioned, I agree winning and the FANS EXPECTING UND TO WIN EVERY GAME will increase the overall attendance and following for UND football. With that, still doesn't hurt to talk other ideas (team intro, season ticket locations, in-game features, etc.) that may also help increase UND football popularity.

Let's also drape black blankets in all the corners over the seats of the Alerus to look better while we're at it. That'll help the winning.

I agree winning helps but where were all the fans right after UND beat Wyoming? Or the game versus Northmen Colorado that was thought to be a de facto playoff game at the time.

The diffusion of responsibility that is present when discussing ideas that may increase attendance is staggering. The team must win, yes, but it also doesn't hurt to explore additional ideas. I don't see anything wrong with talking about certain possible changes when one looks at how low attendance has relatively been over the past 5 years or so.

I hope the team wins more than anyone so I also hope that is the main factor that ultimately boosts attendance. Fact is the team went 7-4 last season and yet the Alerus Center never once hosted over 10,000 in attendance.

Just so you all know, NoDak nation is changing up their buba bucks for this year. It's gonna be a  $5,000 scholarship at each game. Students will have to be present at the drawing in the 4th quarter to receive it if they win.

I don't really want to revisit this controversial debate again, but if the students don't want to attend in large numbers -- especially with promotions like this -- then the student section should be downsized to allow for more season ticket holders to obtain those premium midfield seats on the west side.

In my opinion, there's no reason the midfield seats on the west side should be essentially empty during a close game in the 4th quarter; it looks just piss poor on TV and, of course, in person.

It was not meant as negative. I don't think any UND fans would come to NDSU games when UND is out of town either, How many UND hockey fans, when UND has an off week, say "I'm going to drive to Bemidji to see the Beavers take on Ferris State"? My guess is not many. Same for FB fans of both teams. Some people are trying really hard to find smack where there is none.

I don't think you understand the concept of bandwagon fans, especially of the UND hockey/NDSU football type.

I know of several "NDSU fans" (purely bandwagon) who could possibly be in attendance for the UND Potato Bowl vs USD because of the potential UND hype and NDSU being out of town. These are the same "NDSU fans" that I saw at UND football games regularly before NDSU's current championship run starting in 2011. By no means am I clamining that I know exactly what the masses will do (that's why I am just estimating a wide range of possibilities in terms of Potato Bowl attendance); however, I do know bandwagon, casual fans exist and it is not synonymous with the UND hockey/Bemidji State hockey example you provided ....

I have never been to a game in Grand Forks, but am considering making the trip this year.  Would appreciate any recommendations for places to stay, to partake of a pregame beverage or 2, etc.  Would love to see both teams undefeated heading into the game.  The Yotes go on the road in week 1 to New Mexico and host Weber State in week 2.

Any hotel along 42nd street would be fine, as they are all an easy walk to the Alerus Center.

The Canad Inn (https://www.canadinns.com/stay/grand-forks/home/) -- which is attached to the Alerus Center -- is always a great choice because it eliminates driving (restaurant, bar, tailgating, game all right there).

Other hotels near the Alerus Center include, but are not limited to:

    Sleep Inn & Suites (https://www.choicehotels.com/north-dakota/grand-forks/sleep-inn-hotels/nd052?source=pmfgosil&pmf=GOOGLE&k_clickid=f93ac9df-8c44-4b82-8cae-caf64810ec3d)

    Baymont Inn & Suites (https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/baymont/grand-forks-north-dakota/baymont-inn-and-suites-grand-forks/overview)

    Staybridge Suites (http://www.ihg.com/staybridge/hotels/us/en/grand-forks/gfksb/hoteldetail)

My Place Hotel (http://www.hotelsone.com/grand-forks-hotels-us/my-place-hotel-grand-forks.html?as=g&aid=112804211078&dsti=480075&dstt=8&label=bh480075&akw=my place hotel grand forks&asrc=Search&ast=_my place hotel grand forks&gclid=Cj0KEQjwwry8BRDjsbjMpPSDvagBEiQA5oW0nMYHNhh4-PcB03_TnMzOrZGDaxo0sMuV_NMoEw1OaV4aAnWt8P8HAQ)

Should be a fun game, hope you can make the trip.

I don't give a rip about music and video boards and when we won national title, it's not like we were taking the field with the lights off.  People came because the team was dominant and was doing special things.  Bells and whistles are just that.  The biggest thing that will affect attendance will be having success.  And now having been to Missoula last year and having seen what supposedly all these other schools do...and supposedly a good one at that.  I didn't see them doing too much different than what we do, with maybe the exception of a horse taking a big steaming dump on the field before the opening kick off.  I'm not sure if that is in Montana's marketing plans or not...but it happened.  They did nearly the same silly games, walked out people for acknowledgement at the same times and piped in nearly the same music at the same times.  It seemed to be pretty much the stock college football show that is out there now days.   Again, I didn't make noise on every 1st, 2nd and 3rd down against UC Davis on Dec. 1 2001 because I was told to, or prompted to.  I did it because I was into it, and so did those who were around me.

Good point in terms of winning, which I absolutely do not deny. With that said, I won't be backed into a corner and admit that UND and the Alerus Center are doing everything peachy perfect in terms of the presentation and in-game features. There's always room for improvement in that department, especially in the Alerus Center, in my opinion.

I'm happy that you are of the opinion that you will attend and cheer for UND irregardless of the bells and whistles, because that is the same way I look at supporting the University of North Dakota football program. However, it is not just about people like us; the casual fans need to also be considered if we want the overall attendance numbers to increase.

Games against USD are well attended. If say worth an extra 1500 over Drake. If we're 2-0 it should be a very nice crowd and a very big tailgate.

It was in 2009. Not so much in big game in 2011. Let's see what 2016 brings.

UND starts 2-0 and its 11k for the Potato Bowl. #LeaveNoDoubt!! Go Fighting Hawks!

Last season, after the big win against Wyoming, the Potato Bowl vs. Drake drew a relatively low number of 9,865 to the game.

I would love to see 11,000+ at this season's home opener/Potato Bowl; however, I'll be a bit more modest in my predictions until I see proof that UND football is catching on in popularity around Grand Forks (UND marketing/in-game productions and Alerus Center can go a long way to improve this, as well -- music, music, music !!!).

I predict 10,000 to 10,500 at the Potato Bowl game due to the regional opponent (South Dakota) and UND football's consistent marketing this summer.

A large chunk of them will be in Iowa City, and another large group not going to the game will be at watch parties. I think the number of those fans at the Alerus will be able to be counted on you fingers..

The Iowa/NDSU game (11 AM CT) will be well over by the time UND kicks off against South Dakota at the Potato Bowl (4 PM CT). Plenty can still watch the NDSU game and yet attend the UND game in-person.

So, your troll attempt was pathetic. Pretty interesting to hear you provide a "trolling comment" right after you asked "No smack here, just wondering why the Bison being on the road makes any difference in the attendance of a UND football game?"

Try a little harder to troll next time.

  18. To each their own in terms of opinions but I guess my opinion on this matter is that there is a bit too much nitpicking going on here.

Yes, playing fast-paced teams is scary and a bad match-up for teams with little corner depth and that can't tackle in space. Yes, playing PAC-12 teams like Utah and Washington will be more difficult than playing MWC (Wyoming) and MAC (Bowling Green) teams, but it does set you up for a big-time splash win for the program. Since a win versus Wyoming brought confidence to the program last season, what would a win versus Utah or Washington do? That kind of potential win cannot be overlooked, in my opinion. Go for the big win, even if that includes an up-tempo team from the MAC.

Big difference between scheduling non-conference FCS games and non-conference FBS games.

Two totally different methodologies and philosophies.

    Correct.

But from an offensive scheme standpoint, Sam Houston State and Bowling Green are somewhat similar. So going off of purely that, along with Montana and others of the BSC, UND will eventually need to eliminate the "big play" of these teams. Bubba knows you can't give up 50+ yard chunk plays against these kind of up-tempo, spread attacks.

EDIT: BGSU will provide UND an early opportunity to see how their defense has developed since last season's Montana and Montana State match-ups.

  20. 7 minutes ago, UND-1 said:

I should have stated Bowling Green type of "offenses".  My apologies.

We will reconvene after the game and see how it went.  I know what our offense can do to them.

If UND does give up a bunch of yards against Bowling Green, which is more than possible, it will be because UND couldn't get pressure on the QB and the DBs couldn't tackle in open space. That type of situation, early in the season and out of conference, is good for the team in terms of experience before conference play. I think the fast-paced spread system that BGSU runs will prepare UND for most, if not all, of the up-tempo attacks UND will see in-conference ... which is a good thing. Remember, UND's main goal is to win the BSC.
