  1. Race between Bartels and Heidlebaugh is obviously a close one; however, I'd guess Heidlebaugh wins it based on him being a bit more athletic than Bartels.

All 4 running backs are very capable, with John and Brady being a super tandem. Hopefully they stay healthly all year!

The WR spot is surprisingly coming along. Both scholarship true freshmen look quite good and FBS transfer Demun Mercer will be capable on the field too. Throw in the incumbents Clive and Stanley and you have a nice corps for Studsrud.

Cloyd will be an unreal TE moving forward. He will play a lot this year. As others have mentioned, both him and Pinke will be a great tandem moving forward. The depth at TE and FB is really quite good.

Cant have any injuries to the OL. Right now, starting 5 offensive linemen are going to be road graders. They will move people and the drop off will be minimal to last year's line IF there are no injuries or changes to current starting 5 (Stockwell, Bell, Coe, Taylor, Cox).

Defensive line and linebackers will be just fine. As everyone knows, DB is where questions lie. Have to get Harris and Tyus Carter healthy and back at CB. Of course, Reyes needs to stay healthy all year - tremendous tremendous player. Arnell and Palmborg both capable at other safety spot. Chris Carter can get the job done as a third or forth corner along with Hunt. I do not think either true freshman corner should be on the field this year; if Holm or Randolph are playing, that does not bode well for the pass defense. Need to have the four "veteran" corners (Hunt only spring ball) healthy and playing!

Specialists appear to be the same as 2014: Taubenheim and Bolduc.

Same old narrative continues, though: QB, OL, and DBs need to all stay healthy all year and then UND is looking very good.

    Go Hawks!

Your point is basically right...UND should worry more improving about itself and less about scheduling a game with NDSU. However, don't hold your breath waiting for NDSU to come to UND "demanding" a game. That's never going to happen.

I'll just say it: you're wrong.

As much as we all want to see the Bison football team lay and egg and have a losing season and not make the playoffs, If I was a betting man, I wouldn't take that bet.  That would be like a St Cloud St. fan hping UND hockey missed the playoffs for 2 or so years in a row.  The Bison have one of the best programs in the FCS.  As much as I hate to say it, that isn't going to change anytime soon.

Never said they will miss the playoffs. Definitely never said that. However, I certainly implied NDSU will eventually cease to go undefeated in the playoffs. There has to be more parity than that.

  4. I guess my disgust with this all is pretty straightforward: once NDSU loses in the playoffs (or perhaps twice over a couple seasons), their expectations and egos will fall to the point where UND will finally be viewed as a viable scheduling target. It's upsetting that NDSU is so conceited that they will lie about their scheduling strategy just to allow them (administration, fans, boosters, etc.) to live in their own dreamland (one where NDSU football is so superior it should function independently of a 100+ year rival).

I am fairly certain that NDSU's stance on scheduling UND (has nothing to do with FCS terms; it's purely UND) will change once they stop winning national championships in the next year or two.

  5. NDSU has set it self up for a real nice bandwagon fan dissolution once they start to lose. Why wouldn't you want an annual home-and-home in-state rivalry game that outdraws every other game in both attendance and popularity? NDSU's football program is very good, but there's no question they have a huge target on their back. Not sure when the meltdown will occur, but it is inevitable given some the behind-the-scenes rhetoric.

I admit I am horribly biased, but there is a fairly consistent precedent where college football dynasties eventually crash hard.

Here are a few theories on what will happen: http://www.teamspeedkills.com/2013/1/9/3855934/alabama-football-dynasty-fall

    Agree with your points, 100%

    To answer your questions...

D-Line should be pretty solid with one starter returning, and another guy (Gus Schwieterman) returning after missing all of last season with an injury (he had a really good 2014 season so there's high hope for him).  The other guys on the line returning haven't been starters but I believe they are going to be juniors...so team experience if not a ton of game experience.   The LBs should be very strong as they return all 3 starters from last year including one All-MAC player.  DBs should be ok but took a hit with a key returning starter suffering a season ending injury already.

One thing I should mention that I didn't in an earlier post is that the QB situation at BG is still to be determined.  Most seem to feel that James Knapke will be the guy. He actually started most of the season in 2014 when Matt Johnson went down with injury.   BG won the MAC-East division that year, and he threw for over 3,000 yards, so Knapke has won games at BG.  But you'd be crazy to think there wouldn't be some drop off compared to what Matt Johnson did last season at QB (4,946 yards, 46 TDs, and only 8 INTs).  I am hearing that Knapke looks improved this year so hoping that's the case.  So it will be a new starting QB this year, but most likely not a NEW QB, if that makes sense.

Just realized that UND plays home games in a "dome"...makes sense, and it's a nice looking facility, but I'm just curious what the fans think...do you like it or would your prefer outdoor football.  I have a lot of relatives in Minnesota and some of the old-timers speak fondly of the days the Vikings used to play outside, but I'm never sure if they are remembering it with rose-colored glasses and forgetting how damn cold sitting in the old stadium would be.

UND used to play outdoors until 2001, when the Alerus Center became the new home of UND football. Having an outdoor stadium, like UND's former game venue Memorial Stadium, has its advantages when it's nice and warm in the early fall, but the cold winter weather of North Dakota makes the controlled Alerus Center climate hard to beat in November and potentially December. Not to mention, the enclosed environment creates the potential for fans to produce a nice home field advantage in terms of noise.

  7. Given the schedule, ANYTHING less than 8-3 would be a huge disappointment this season.

The expectations are high and everyone recognizes that.

Now, it's Bubba's job to get the team to embrace that and execute.

When they get the new uniforms to match the font and overall design, the whole look will be really nice I am thinking.

Agreed. New jerseys with new wordmark will match the helmet numbers better, I would imagine.

  10. Games are won and lost up-front. I feel very comfortable with the defensive front; as for the offensive front, I am afraid there are still way too many questions for me to feel comfortable. Skill position players are finally in place, but will the offensive line be capable? I won't know until September 1st, and perhaps the coaches won't know until then as well. I do have faith that Coach Knauf will continue to develop that unit, but it is demoralizing knowing the offensive line could still perhaps be an issue in year #3 of Bubba ball.

  11. Thanks for the summary; however, I still think those rankings and ratings are not worth much. Recruiting websites miss players all the time, and for that reason, Bubba's staff does their own evaluations and they trust what they see, not what they hear. The elite camps on campus have been an absolute success in terms of UND recruiting and prospect assessment.

Like you mentioned, Santiago, Studsrud, Grady, etc. are not on these lists; exactly why in-person scouting of ALL appropriate regional prospects is the right thing to do.

Claiming that the gray is "throwback" seems to be a bit of a stretch.  Let's be honest . . . other teams are doing gray uniforms and it's the trend, that's why UND has jumped on the gray uniform bandwagon.  (not diss'ing it, just calling it)

I disagree. Bubba has fond memories of some of the 70s teams that donned gray helmets and pants. I definitely think this move is more geared towards a throwback look than it is to be contemporary. After all, Bubba is real old school when it comes to uniforms.

I must have missed something.  Why add another color?  Black, green, white aren't enough?

Late to the party. Gray was utilized by UND in the 1970s. I agree that it is out of line with current colors and a black set should've been added before gray, but gray is a true throwback color for UND.

I think you are correct, that they are holding off the announcement that gray helmets will be used. Not sure I like the idea of all grey, unles there are enough green accents used. but maybe gray pants and helmets and green jerseys? I think some sort of combo would be cool. Maybe it wouldn't looks as good as I'm thinking. Regardless, the new gray apparel will be a cool addition.

Best combo would be gray helmets, green jerseys, and gray pants, in my opinion. I wouldn't mind seeing that home combo every single home game. Gray helmets NEED to have the same green and white striping as the gray pants, though.

    Beautiful throwback look!

    From Yote 53 on AGS

"I am sure there will be some growing pains but as a whole I am more confident in this entire coaching staff than the previous one. I think that will be a net gain for the Coyotes. I think Chris Streveler coming in at QB will bring a dynamic element to the offense that gives them some big play ability. You need that in this conference as it is very difficult to pound out 3-4 yards at a time all the way down the field against Valley defenses. Assuming Streveler earns the starting nod, that gives USD a solid backup in Ryan Saeger and Austin Simmons as a #3 guy was actually a player many thought would fight for the #1 spot before Streveler transferred in. Who knows? Maybe after fall camp this is all flipped on its head but I am confident we have depth at QB right now.

The offensive line should be one year older and one year better. Nick Jensen is really developing into a good tackle so hopefully he keeps developing on that trajectory. We've loaded up with more running backs. We've suffered way too many injuries at that position over the last few years. Hopefully somebody can step up and be a productive ironman ball carrier. Part of the reason for going through so many is that they had been pressed into service very young and took a pounding because of it. Now the RB position is maturing and are hopefully grown enough to handle the riggers of the conference schedule. I think we are thin at WR, though I don't anticipate us chucking the ball all over the field anyway, so if we're going to be thin somewhere that's the place for it.

Defensively I think we'll be fine at the DB and LB positions. D Line worries me as A) Losing Andrew Van Ginkel to transfer really hurts because he was such an impact player, and B) I think we are thin at that position. Frankly, the defensive line could be our Achilles heal this year.

As for record, I am thinking 2-1 in non conference with wins over Weber State at home and UND up in Grand Forks with a loss coming @ New Mexico. In conference, 4-4 would be great, but realistically 3-5 is probably a fair assessment. I actually think the team is better than 3-5 in conference but we miss the gimme Mo State win and our home games are UNI, ISUred, WIU, and NDSU. Road games YSU, ISUblue, SIU, and SDSU. Flip those home/road games and I like our chances better to finish above 4-4 in conference.

I'm thinking this is going to be a 5-6 or 6-5 kind of season. I would be happy with 6-5 with a first year head coach. If it's 3-8 and we're getting blasted I will be pissed, though I do not expect that to happen."

No they did not. They can't use recruits names until they sign the letter of intent. Fortunately this blame does not go to UND this time.

UND did create those and then personally sent them out to the recruits. The recruits are free to do what they wish with them after that.

Also, heard the logo will only be on one side as they didn't want to flip it.

If the logo will only be on one side, then what goes on the other side?

    Numbers? Interlocking ND? Nothing?

I personally think the player's number should go on the opposite side of the helmet; that would look quite throwback and sharp as well, in my opinion.
