If the jury comes back quickly I would expect the sentence will be death. The evidence in this case appears overwhelming. I would be very surprised if the jury did not find the death penalty was warranted. I do not agree with the death penalty, but legally, this case appears to be a prime example of the type of criminal who should receive it. If there is one or two holdouts, I would expect the deliberations to be lengthy.

Jesse Jackson has been getting away with blackmail for years. Corporations happily shell out millions to the Rainbow/Push coalition when threatened with being labled "racist". Jesse has shaken down more people than the entire Gotti family, yet the government turns a blind eye. When it comes to being labled racist, the government turns tail and runs.

He did. I saw him play a few times when I lived in St. Paul, and again on the elite teams. His only downside is his size, he needed to hit the weights. He played in Lincoln the past two years, last I checked he appeared to be progressing. Not sure what his final stats were last season. I hope the Gophers play Tech at home this year, it will be entertaining seeing Woog trying to pronounce his last name.

Okposo and Johnson are probably the two "best" incoming freshman in the country. I have seen Okposo play several times and have always been very impressed. He is built like a power forward, but he is fast and has very good hands. He is easily my bet for ROY. I think Michigan Tech landed the best offensive d-man of all the incoming freshman. Eli Vi(his last name is about 25 letters and I am not going to attempt to spell it), played for a bad HS team in the Cities, and was overlooked by everyone but Tech. He is a very talented player and IMO the best player Tech has picked up in years.

Come on Skates, have you no sense of nepotism? UND should offer this kid a full ride based on his father being Eddie a/k/a "Grant" Belfour.
-
Yep - he will not see the inside of the State Pen. I have only been to the ND State Pen a few times. It is unlike other prisons I have worked with in that it has different "levels" within the prison. The highest security part is no picnic, the lowest is like a college dorm. It looks like the jury is going to give him the needle, which means Indiana. If he was sentenced to life, chances are he would end up in Leavenworth Kansas, or the supermax federal prison in Colorado.

They have to prove more than premeditation. They must also prove at least some aggravating factors - here is what the statute says (which is what the jury will base their decision on). 3592 sets forth the mitigating/aggravating factors. The media indicated this phase will be more difficult for the jurors. I would agree in that I image the prosecution will show much more graphic photos to prove the aggravating factors in 3592, which are: The Defense will try and show mitigating factors, which are:

That is correct. ND does not have the death penalty (we don't even have a federal prison). Terre Haute is the only place in the country Rodriguez would go if convicted to death. He would be on death row, which I imagine is segregated from the rest of the prison. If he is sentenced to life, he could be sent anywhere, including various state prisons. The feds do not have very many maximum security prisons, so they do often contract with state or private prisons for their violent convicts. Once sentenced it is the Federal Bureau of Prison's job to keep Rodriguez safe. If that means changing his identity, they will do that. From what I have seen of this case, it is more likely than not that Rodriguez will spend the rest of his days on death row in Terre Haute Indiana.
-
If the jury finds for the death penalty there is only one place Rodriguez could go - Terre Haute Indiana, which has the only death row in the federal system. Federal prisons have the reputation of being much more comfortable than state prisons. I have never seen a maximum security federal prison, but I imagine they are just as bad as state prisons. Most federal prisons are minimum security, as many federal inmates are white collar criminals. The "prison" in Duluth is more like summer camp, as is the one in Yankton.

When was the last time a forward was the captain for the Sioux? Jeff Panzer? This year C - Bina A - Fabian A - Porter

I remember it well. The rioting, the fires, the teargas, the rubber bullets. Lots of fun things after that game in Dinkytown. For the life of me, I can't remember who won the game

I hope your paper argued that chess is not a sport.

1. Minnesota - they lose a lot but look at what they have coming in 2. Wisconsin - will not score a lot, but should not get scored on much 3. UND - will take a while to figure out who is the #1 goalie, Towes/Oshie should put up some big numbers 4. St. Cloud - good goalie, decent recruits, good coaching 5. UMD - did not lose much from last season 6/7. Denver/CC - both lost way more than they are bringing in 8/9. MTU/MSU - MSU usually does better than they look on paper, MTU does not 10. AA - I almost feel sorry for them, almost.

In five years of coaching I never hit my head on the ice. I did have a skate across the neck (16 stitches) and a stick in the lip (8 stitches), neither would have been prevented by a helmet, unless i had a full face mask on. I am guessing this rule has more to do with USA Hockey's insurance premiums than anything else. Some sections of USA Hockey have required coaches to wear helmets for a couple of years, so this is not something completely new.

I would be an interesting person for the job because I am completely unqualified Ludwig would be interesting because he is probably one of the smartest stay at home D men to play the game. Usually smart players like him make pretty good coaches. I know he helped coach the Stars after he retired, but I have no idea what he has done since then. After a lengthy NHL career, he is probably not looking to be an assistant college coach. I think he would be the ideal person to take over for Berry. I don't think it would ever happend, but it would be nice.
-
I have not idea if he would be interested, but Craig Ludwig would be an interesting person to fill Berry's position.

I-39? Looks like he missed North Dakota by a couple of States. He should be complaining about Wisconsin. I guess Canadians get confused when they entire the states. Kyle: How do we get to Ottawa? Canadian: We're in Canada! There's only one road! By the way, watch out for Scott, he's a dick! It is pretty fun how a guy from a country with a pretty socialistic government calls us fascists.

I agree to a point. However, players like McLean had to spend a couple of years in the USHL in order to bring their game up. I know McLean and he was one of the most dedicated athletes I have ever seen. The kid worked out on his own and was one of the most mature HS kids I have ever met. Same with O'Leary (who I still think was screwed by Blais). I agree that many of these elite coaches are very biased against playing HS hockey, but they do have a point. Exposure, competition, coaching, teammates and work ethic all play a big part in whether or not a player is going to jump to the next level. McLean planned on quitting hockey and going to school until he was talked into following the Ice Sharks to Chicago. He did not have the exposure he would have had, if he would have played in the USHL during HS, or even if he played HS hockey for Moorhead or another high profile MN team. It is true some kids make it to the next level without jumping ship. However, it puts them at a disadvantage in my opinion. This is not to say I like the way hockey (and sports in general) are going. I think kids should stay in their hometown and enjoy the HS experience. Realistically, AAA teams and junior leagues are the way to go if you want to play at the next level. Unfortunately, many parents and kids overestimate the likelihood of this happening.

What did Aaron Marvin ever do to you At the various elite tournies my cousin was in he was told in no uncertain terms that he would never play past high school if he stayed where he was (Fargo North). A lot of that had to due with limited games, weak competition, few teammates at his level. However, coaching also had a lot to do with it. Coaches like Morinville develop talent and prepare players for the next level. Most ND coaches use their talented players simply to get as many points from them as possible. They either do not have the ability, or don't care about developing players for post high school competition. A good argument can be made that they are not paid to develop individual players, and that may be true. However, schools like Moorhead, Roseau, Warroad ect... expect their coaching staff to help develop talent, not simply exploit it. I think Shanley has done a good job developing what they have. It is still difficult with the lack of competition, and one or two standout players for those players to get any better. It looks like they have the talent coming up to rival South and the GF schools in the next 5 or so years.

There have been fewer and fewer rabbits, squirrals and other small mammals in my yard. Now we are starting to get dead half-eaten birds laying around. The other day I notice one of these in my backyard: A couple of these guys will clear the rodent problem right up (as well as the sparrows).

For example? Hoeven has been pretty good for the State. Fargo, Grand Forks and Bismarck all appear to be doing very well under his leadership. I guess I can't say much for the small towns, but I don't think there is anything that can be done to slow the population losses and other problems that go along with less people. Brudvik has been waiting for a chance to attack Stenehjem and get his name out. On TV he looked worse than Nixon when he debated Kennedy. Their was no substance at all in what he was complaining about. The attorney general was asked for his opinion, and he gave it. It is not his job to "investigate" into the matter unless he was asked.

Spoken like a true lawyer - you should enroll in law school. Of course you may get some backlash from your present employer, they are jealous of the law school continually beating them in malpractice bowls. Robert Hoy is a respected attorney. I do not know him personally, but he is known as a fair, honest attorney. Mr. Rodriguez is entitled to the best defense possible, and it appears he is receiving it. That said, I have no doubt he did it and the world will be a better place after the last drop of potassium chloride courses through his veins. It has already been mentioned, but the better the defense, the smoother the appeals will likely be.

I'd have to disagree with you. Aaron Marvin is a very talented power forward. Lee was not a third round NHL pick, and was not as good of a high school player. IMO Aaron Marvin is a much more complete player than Weisgarber. For his size he skates well and has good hands. He plays with the same energy Oshie did in HS and I think he will be a good 2-3 year college player and have a good chance at an NHL career. Jordy Christian is a more talented player as far as speed goes, but from what I have seen Marvin sees the ice better, has just as good hands, a better shot and is a better playmaker. Something we can all agree on - why the heck would either player want to play at PCU?

There is probably more to the story. Both players were from large cities (Milwaukee and Ft. Lauderdale). MSUM learned (or should learn) that bringing in gangbangers is a bad idea, no matter how talented they are. This is not a new problem, NDSU had similar problems a few years back (Reggie Scott). Schools like UND and NDSU have always been and are going to be pressured to bring in the best athletes. Sometimes this means bringing in a player who could not cut it at a big time school for whatever reason. If that reason is crime, I would hope the coach does not bring the player into the community. I am suprised the media in Fargo has not taken MSUM to task for bringing a killer into the community. A quick search would have revealed some very disturbing things about this former player's past.
