  1. The weekend starts with a golf tourney on Friday afternoon at the Moorhead CC. They have a silent auction and a band Friday night (a couple of years ago they had the Zamboni's). On Saturday afternoon there is a poker tournament - all of the buy in money goes to the players, it is actually a very good format. I believe the poker is at the West Fargo VFW. I have attended various parts of this in past years and have had a lot of fun. Typically there are the local NHL/college players, and some of Matt's teammates. I see he was just traded back to Carolina yesterday. Some of the events are spendy - $250 for golf, $200 for poker, and I think $50 for the concert, but the silent auction is free to attend. They typically have some pretty good hockey items in the auction.
  2. He looks like a possible Fabian type player. It never hurts to have a big power forward on a third or fourth line. Like Goon said, he may have a big upside and become a Goren type player. Even if he doesn't the Sioux need a good checking forward with the loss of Fabian. Plus look at the kids former team: He will fit right in.
  3. This guy gave the speach as a teacher at a large high school graduation in a DC high school. Why does standing up for your community equal insecurity? You are doing the same thing that is allegedly done on Bisonville - somehow turning an article involving Fargo into a rant against NDSU. What on earth does the article have to with NDSU?
  4. As a graduate and supporter of both schools I think Chapman is acting pretty juvenile. I will agree he has been very good for NDSU, but this has nothing to do with NDSU and everything to do with him personally. As for the funding "inequalities", NDSU needs to realize that the med school creates a large part of this supposed unequal funding. Last I checked NDSU does not have a professional school. The med school and to a lesser extent the law school are apart of UND, but are very independent when it comes to funding. The cost to educate a doctor is much higher than any other student. Every MD position I see in Fargo starts well into six figures, I imagine it is the same in GF. The faculty budget alone in the med school has to be huge.
  5. Everyone needs to boycott Red Baron Pizza. It is all their fault.
  6. It is crap like this post that give message boards a bad name. Brian is one of the most humble likeable kids I have ever met. He came to the Sioux with very high expectations and I agree he probably has not lived up to them, but he is still one of the top defensemen in the WCHA. I think the biggest knock against Brian is that he puts too much pressure on himself. He needs to learn to not listen to drunken idiots yelling at games or message board morons who think they know "someone" with "connections" and have the inside story. The Sioux would be fortunate to have Brian back for his junior season.
  7. I did not see the penalty on Finley, neither did the ESPN crew. The penalty on Porter at the end was a terrible call - they called him for charging, but he was coasting the entire way. The officials called some equally bad penalties against BC. The Sioux could not win faceoffs. However, Towes was kicked out at least 1/2 of time. Lammy was his typical self, he made some nice saves, but was flopping around due to being out of position. Overall BC was the better team. The Sioux had no answer for their speed up front. On the other end BC would not let Duncan get a shot off and did a good job keeping the entire DOT line in check. The main reason for the Sioux loss was their defensemen: Finley, Chorney, Jones, Genoway, and Lee were all skated around easily.
  8. Actually the ND Statute is phrased like this: I did get a client out of a DUI because he was stopped by a game wardon on his own land, which was posted. So the public had no "right of access for vehicular use". I don't think driving a zamboni while drunk could get you a DUI for the same reason - unless of course you were driving the zamboni on a road which the public has a right of access. Unlike the NJ court, I do think ND would consider a zamboni a "motor vehicle" which is defined as:
  9. I believe Miller and Stauber are the only goalies to win the Hobey. Millers numbers: 31 wins, .950 save%, 1.31 GA and 10 shutouts - of course Panzer was robbed though Staubers numbers: 34 wins, .913 save%, 2.72 GA and 5 shutouts - I would consider this a different "era" of college hockey. These numbers would be pretty average today, but in the late 80's they were very impressive. Brown's numbers: 30 wins, .931 save %, 1.58 GA and 6 shutouts. Wins and GA lead the nation, save % and shutouts near the top. I think Brown will still win because Notre Dame probably received more national press than anyone this year, he is a senior and very involved in the community, and there is no clear favorite among the other players - Duncan did have 12 points less than Hensick and Ehn plays in a weak league. Ehn winning would not be that big of an upset. He did lead the nation in scoring most of the year, and he has about 20 more points than anyone else on his team. Plus being in the Air Force Academy is not exactly the easiest thing. It is basically like being in basic training and AIT for four years. Of course I want Duncan to win and think he deserves it. He led the toughest conference in scoring, is a class act, came up big in important games (6 game winning goals), and had 10+ more points than anyone else on the team.
  10. The Gophers should get some goals. It doesn't look like AF is going to be able to trap them. AF has a very talented first line though and they should get some more chances. I would guess there will be at least 7-8 goals in this game. Now that I said that, AF will hang on for the 1-0 win.
  11. 3/4 but I had a 97 title game rematch. I gave almost no respect for the CCHA only picking ND to win their first then lose to BU. Had the Gophers not turned things around in the Final Five, I would have picked Air Force. I still think a team like Air Force matches up well against the Gophers. Air Force has a solid first line and will get some chances. The Gophers are still obviously the more talented team and should win by 3+ goals, but I could see Air Force making an interesting game out of it. The four teams in the West regional should be the most exciting to watch. I am expecting a couple of 6-3 type games.
  12. But Air Force is the lower seed. The same thing happened last year when the Sioux played Holy Cross.
  13. I was going by school, not city. I guess the three you mentioned are the only three I can think of currently playing. Grubb and Krebsbach both played D-1 hockey recently.
  14. The West had a pretty decent showing this year. They showed some depth, playing in 3 close games. Ironically the only blowout was by an Eastern team who had been in the West up until this year (or was it last year). Bismark has some very good youth teams that should translate into some decent HS teams in the next few years. Also the population of Bismarck and Williston has been growing at a steady pace. More numbers typically equal better quality. Minot continues to have talented teams that cannot win when it matters. Minot probably has more alum playing college/junior hockey than any other school (currently). Based simply on population growth the schools I would expect to field the best teams over the next several years are RR, South and Bismarck High. The only other school that should have increased enrollment is Williston. Despite the juvenile posts by junior24 and other HS kids that post on this site, the West had an ok showing this year. In past years I would say that 6 or 7 East teams would be in the state tourny if they still did the East-West play in, but this year I think it worked out right. Fargo North, Central and WF were not much better than any of the four Western teams in the tourny.
  15. Matt Burm played an amazing game in net for South. South also had Mike Gast on that team, who was one of the top players in the state. I believe he played for the Ice Sharks with Panzer et. al. before playing at Concordia. This years South team is very talented, but does not play very consistent. Maybe they will bet their "bad" game out of the way and make it to the championship game against Red River. IMO South is the only team that has the talent to beat RR this year.
  16. Taxes on prizes equal about 1/3 of the value of the prize, so $15K on $45K seems right on.
  17. He said he was taking his LSATs, hopefully he goes to law school at UND - the med school hockey team would take a beating worse than usual.
  18. I posted this a few weeks ago - I would think the Gophers are more interested in Tyler Landman. He was one of the leading scorers in last years U16 tourny.
  19. If it was the 2005 WSOP it was a guy named Randy McCay, originally from ND, but lives in AZ. I believe he took out Mimi Rogers. There is a little blurb about it HERE
  20. I believe they were mostly interested in looking at Roseau D-man Aaron Ness and forward Tyler Landman. These two are considered two of the best 16 year olds in the state. If I remember right Aaron Ness' father played for the Sioux in the mid 1980's.
  21. Hetero? I guess I just assumed the opposite
  22. I don't know about a younger brother, but I believe Paul has an older brother who was playing in the ECHL, not sure if he is still there. I think he played college hockey in the MIAC. I thought Paul was the youngest, but I could be wrong. That is quite the hockey family, I had forgotten their daughter married a Potulny.
  23. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they moved to Oregon before Paul started youth hockey. I don't think he ever played hockey in Fargo. Dan Gaustad also lived out west for a few years before coming back to Grafton, where the family is from. He is an attorney in Grand Forks and Grafton.
  24. That is exactly what I took from the article. The reporter wanted to do a story about who is putting up the $$. She could not find out said information so she wrote a nasty article implying that there is something fishy going on. I would like to think the Forum's editors would screen garbage like this out. The title and the picture were very misleading. This is an example of journalism at its worse.
  25. Eric Johnson was by far the best player for team USA. He is going to be a very good NHL player.
