Observations on NCAA's & the Future
Ole in MSP replied to the green team's topic in Women's Basketball
I said rare, not ever. I was thinking of SDSU when I wrote that. WBB probably has a slightly higher chance than the MBB. SDSU WBB lost over the weekend again in the NCAA. Getting in the tourney is going to be the most we can hope for. Sad, but realistic sorry to say. -
Observations on NCAA's & the Future

Anyone who thought that UND when going D1 was going to be a major BB power in the country is pretty naive. The best I think that UND in either men's or women's BB can expect is a conference championship and getting into some post season play. Winning in the post season for UND or any other regional school is going to be very very rare. That is what we will have to live with. -
I think Derek is still trying to get his whistle out of his throat after this last gig on Saturday at the Xcel. Never saw so many non calls as in the game against DU.
-
Noticed a few things: strong arm, quick release, can throw 40 yds off his back foot, good foot speed, accurate, but mechanics might be questionable. Some good QB coaching could help that. I like what I see for raw talent!

JOBS? And I do not recall a time when GF had a mayor that was proactive promoting growth when I lived there.

Sorry, have not been able to post for awhile. Thanks very much for doing this for everyone. Would like to see a couple of "big men" recruited soon. Lots of talent these days in the MSP area. Can't Jones find a kid here with some size and ability, lots of other schools do.

I respect Sutton's ability and think he is a real asset, however as we saw last year, you need at least 3 very good running backs and even more behind them because of the beating they take at this level and the need to control the ball in tight games. Last year's defense was better than they showed. When the offense cannot keep the ball for more than 90 seconds and the D is on the field 70%+ of the time you are going to get beat. Not a DB expert and I only saw 3 games (all on TV) so cannot comment specifically on them, but I was consistently upset with the lack of ball control the offense showed even in games that we were even up talent wise. Looking forward with optimism that Muss will find a quality QB, several RB's and WR's will step up and the season will end 7-4 or better. Still disappointed in the home schedule, but hopefully this is the last year of grovelling to find foes. Go Sioux!

Losing Murray I think will prove to be bigger impact than we expect and QB play will be critical as usual. Wins against 2 of 4 GWFC foes, Losses to the BCS teams, win all the playdown games plus Drake, and the UNC game determines whether we are 6-5 or 7-4. A season of 7-4 means modest progress or mediocrity for the program. 6-5 and Muss must go. 8-3 or better we are moving the right way. Without any inside info to the real talent level and overall situation for next year there is no way to tell what kind of expectations to have. Being a long time fan I hope for the best, but not getting too optimistic. Maybe a QB and RB will emerge to lead this team or one or more of the WR's will be a superstar. Hope so. Looking forward to some schedule excitement outside the Big Sky too. Would love to see a Big 10 or Big 12 game on the horizon someday.

Not a problem to wait. Thanks very much for doing it in advance. Appreciate all the efforts and the information.

To keep things easier to follow is it time to start a section in the WIKI to follow either or both MBB and WBB recruiting, schedule options etc.? Prospective recruits, status, signees, past players etc.? Comments?

So it would cost $160,000 to buy out SFU? If correct, whomever negotiated that situation for UND ought to be fired and then submit to a psychological exam if it has not happened already. What a ridiculous number! Are we losing our minds up there in GF?

Agree 2013, have not seen Allard play in many weeks. If he gets undressed on court as he did in Madison we have a problem. In Az on winter respite so not up on the team other than a nice win against LA tech and overall seem to be on the way up. Hoping for solid play and wins the rest of the way. Go Sioux!

Simple enough I guess. Not rocket science, but the formula for 2011 success and beyond will likely be QB play. With great QB play anything can happen i.e. SFU over UND, NDSU over Minnesota, USD over Minnesota, UND almost beating NIU, etc. As we saw in 2010, poor QB play and you end up getting your butt kicked. With average or better QB play I agree, 7-4 is probably realistic. If a diamond in the rough shows up optimistically could be 8-3 or even 9-2. Hope I am not jinxing the program.

I think they also generated a little excitement those years by almost beating and then beating the Gophers while outplaying them in Minneapolis. That is a little more exciting than playing Drake, Black Hills and Montana Western. The Bison also beat Montana, Central Michigan, and Ball State on the road. If the Sioux beat Idaho and Fresno State you may see some increase in attendance. Probably not going to happen though.

I must respectfully disagree. The majority of UND fans are knowledgeable and do care who we play. Wins against Winona, SCSU, Crookston, Minot, or anyone else mean NOTHING to an alum and I think to the kids who play or are recruited. I live in the Twin Cities, I would come to GF two to three times a year to see FCS teams (or higher classification if willing) that have a track record of being in the playoffs. I will not drive to GF to watch Drake, NAIA teams, or DII teams period. I would rather travel to see UND play DI teams and FCS teams on the road than have them play some of the teams coming to GF this year. I am retired, so I have this flexibility. Thank God we got into the Big Sky because if 2011 is an example of what we would have for a schedule in the future the program would lose fan interest for lack of interesting foes ala the BB program. Some of the GWFC foes including the one you mention do not generate that much interest yet because of the non playoff eligible issue. I have been critical of Faison for this year's schedule and I think he did not do a good job in pulling it together. That is all behind us now and we can look to 2012, but it is going to be a boring season save a few D1 games and the two GWFC home games even if we win them all.

If they do not beat Minot State by 40 there ought to be an NCAA investigation. Ridiculous!
-
Am I hallucinating or did I see something recently about Minot State considering D1 hockey? I know they are moving to Dll and are joining the NSIC.

Based on the article on the Sioux athletic home page Cassie has won the NCAA Top VIII award for her past academic and athletic accomplishments and will be presented the award on ESPN on Feb 14. Nice company she is joining. Congratulations, Cassie.

Not much left except just plain insubordination or personality conflict.

I hope this is an aberration!

I think this team is really fun to watch and see them gain confidence with each game. Saw them play at UW earlier in the season and the change is remarkable. Adding Brekke's presence has no doubt been a big step, but Wilmer was getting better too b4 his injury. Would like to see them play the Badgers again just to see how far they have come. Nice group of young men. All the best to the guys for the rest of the season.

Thank God that Bye doesn't score many goals on Friday this week. Would love to see 7-1 or 6-2, but as inconsistent as this team plays I can see a loss to AA, a loss to BSU and one more slip up either at SCSU or at MTU for a 5-3 finish. Hope I am wrong, but this team is a bubble off every once in awhile. Maybe with Chay out they will play a more defensive game and not get behind early as in recent poor outings.
