  1. A lot of other schools do this to a certain extent. I think Michigan does it as well as a few schools outside of our conference. They have to do with performance marks both academic and athletic I think. Either way, it's very high school. Especially on goalie masks. I love custom painted masks. I think it's one of the nicest custom gear the sport has.
  2. I think an SCSU fan giving credance to this argument shows just where this topic stands. CB is a great coach. For any of you SCSU fans reading this: Dump Dahl for Pete's Sake! "Promote" him to Head PR guy. That way we can still hear the Dahl-isms every once in a while.
  3. Shows how much I know. I would have thought only giving up 1 goal in 2 games would at least put his GAA under 1 for the tourney.... Dunno. And as for Briggs, I've seen more Briggs bashing on POI than I have ever seen on this board. Of course, I've only been to POI 5 times or so.
  4. His father wore #11, which is why he took that number for the WJC and with the Sioux
  5. I don't think any of them will leave. They have no reason to. Ballard would be a prime candidate to leave if his rights were still owned by Colorado, but he's now a Coyote. The Coyotes are out of the playoff picture. Apart from $$$, there's no reason for Ballard to sign. Vanek is a ? that I am leaning towards staying. Buffalo does have a chance to make the playoffs as a #8, but Vanek has too much to gain from staying one more year. For example, with GP leaving, Lucia could ask Vanek to grow a spine and start practicing defense over the off season. WHo knows, with Vanek, but I'm banking on him staying. USCHO also has eyes on Jessiman and Suter leaving. Don't know much about Jessiman, but I'd put him in the same boat as Ballard. Jessiman's rights are owned by the Rangers. They're going to a whole length of nowhere. Jessiman stays. Suter probably will stay as well. However, this time next season, Suter is a pro.
  6. Actually the only coach that gets outcoached consistently is Dahl, IMO.
  7. In an NCAA context among freshmen goaltenders from the WCHA here's how it stacks up: Jordan Parise (UND) 2 games 1-1 1 Goal allowed 0.50 GAA .950 Save Percentage (is that right? Might be off on the calculations) Kellen Briggs (UMN) 2 games 1-1 5 Goals Allowed (around) 2.50 GAA I'm not sure how to calculate GAA and Save percentage, but someone can put them up. I got JPar's GAA from a different thread.
  8. In 1995 the NJ Devils won a Stanley Cup with a bunch of (then) nobodies. The Florida Marlins won their first World Series with a bunch of (then) nobodies. Gosh, you could say that the Gophers won in 2002 with a bunch of nobodies. As did the Sioux in 2000 (speaking from the perspective an outsider would have). Sure we had Panzer, but Bochenski has Panzer's scoring touch, even if he's a tad slower and bigger than Jeff. Bo will need to step it up next year, but next year, we're going to be faster, even more aggressive, and more solid. We'll have speed and extreme lateral movement among forwards (Spirko and Murray), we'll have scoring (Stafford, Murray, and Bo), 2 way Dmen (Radke, Fuher, Jones, and (hopefully) Schneider), great roleplayers (Bina, Fabian, Marvin, Massen, and Porter), and solid goaltending. We're a shoe in to be at least competitive next year regardless. How many are the Gophers and Bulldogs losing?
  9. Lamorello is the best GM in the NHL. A brilliant draft day strategist and the keenest mind in building a team in the NHL. He was a steal from being commissioner of Hockey East (after being Providence College's Head Coach). I'm happy whenever a UND player is drafted, but I'm happier when he is drafted by the Devils. Here's hoping Zajac is drafted by the Devils!
  10. I thought special teams coaching was the responsibility of the Assistant coaches as far as practice is concerned? I don't know this for sure, but I will stand corrected if I am wrong. As for CB leaving, I wouldn't put it past him to leave once his contract is up, but he's doing too well to leave now. Didn't CB say that he didn't like the kind of hockey that the NHL basically revolves around? I understand perspectives can change, but if this is true, then why go to the NHL? I'd love to see CB as head coach of the US Olympic Hockey team though. That would rule. Don't know if that would be possible since he is a college coach, but it still would rule.
  11. Among forwards, I'd say Parise is the best Sioux skater since Hrkac. And that would put him tied for #3 all time, IMO with Panzer and Karl. #2 being Hrkac and #1 being Belfour (simply because he'll be the only Sioux player that I can name off the top of my head who will be heading into the NHL Hall of Fame once he hangs up his skates).
  12. I got told that UND still needs a goaltender. This need thing is out of hand. I REALLY think that Karl G was so good that, when he graduated, it left a sort of curse on all the goaltenders who followed him. Even if we have a goaltender who does well, he will have to do better than Karl in a visible manner, and/or get us at least one NC. JPar and Brandt are good goaltenders. I don't see their problems right now. Crash the net!
  13. Rinks will get longer (expanding the neutral zone), the equipment is getting smaller due to regulations and they may not allow the goaltenders to handle the puck behind the net anymore. Darn Brodeur for being such a good stickhandler!
  14. I'm not a Kocur fan. If you want a down and dirty ex-wing, look at Lapointe and Ciccarelli. Actually Cicarelli moreso. Gotta love a guy who you know before the puck is even dropped is going to crash the net every time he is in your zone.
  15. I agree with NDFlyer. MOST fights are consensual and, to a certain degree, staged. No, I'm not saying it is scripted ala WWE wrestling. I'm saying that they just don't go out there and yank a guy in and start pummeling away. The other player has every opportunity to turn down the challenge of fighting. It is rare when it is turned down, but it has been in the past. I do believe that those few fights out there that are not consensual, basically a player goes out there and starts cheap shotting everyone in sight until someone drops the gloves, should be punished. I also believe that if you are dumb enough to warrant a fight being thrown up against you, you should fight the fight yourself. None of this Enforcer style hockey. That way if those primadonnas want to go around and throw cheap shots and happen to do it to a 6'5" Dman with an attitude, it's their stupidity, they take the blows. This won't eliminate fights, but it sure will cause the coach to put the smack down in some cases.
  16. For me, I wouldn't be surprised to see Greene and Schneider leave. Schneider didn't have a good season this year, but the Penguins stink, which means he could be wearing a Pens uniform right out of college. He may take off just so that he can get a head start over the off season to get into shape for the Pens opener next season. It's stretching it (quite a bit), but it is a possibility. Greene, it has been said, is good enough to play right away in Edmonton. With Edmonton clinging to playoff hopes, they may want him to help shore up the D. Any speculation on the future of Massen? Not just as a draftee, but as a Sioux in general? This year was really a step down from last year.
  17. 1) tUMD 2) DU 3) who cares Remember: Norton already has Maine winning the NC. So don't be surprised if tUMD loses in Boston.

    Mich/BC

I heard over ESPN radio the commentator (not the phone in guy) admit to Eastern Bias. I couldn't believe my ears. The only sad thing is that was in context with NCAA Basketball and not hockey. Be that as it may, I think the only way Lessard wins the Hobey is for UMD to win it all. Eastern bias is VERY strong and I believe it is stronger than numbers.
  19. We are only losing 3 and gaining 5 (yikes) + 1 goalie. Which means, assuming there are no early departures, we're the favorite for the McNaughton for sure and may be a favorite for the Frozen Four next season. I think the tourney strategy worked in its majority with the exception of finishing the play. We also looked pretty tired so, apart from that and breaking in the new blood, all the Sioux have to work on this off season is special teams (which is something, IMO, everyone works on regardless) and conditioning. And for gosh sakes, I hope Smaby doesn't lose anything over the off season. He's been razor sharp since the benching.
  20. Isn't that all it took to get the Gophs back into the game vs Notre Dame?
  21. I agree for the most part. My sister goes to "the U" and I really don't feel that much animosity towards the college. I guess the reason why I dislike the Gophers so much is because of what you say plus the minority of Gopher fans that go out of their way to be poor sports. I know it is the minority, but sometimes it is the minority that can ruin it for everyone. We should know, here at UND. Because if it weren't for the minority, UND students at the Ralph would be able to stand, exercise free speech, and have fun at the games in any non-violent manner they see fit. A good rivalry is worth its weight in gold these days and we don't find one any greater up in Grand Forks than the Gopher-Sioux rivalry (expecially since the Bison-Sioux football rivalry is dead). It's just the saddest thing for a Sioux fan to come home to find out we lost 1-0 against a team that, though they have a great tradition, was inferior to yours. It also hurts that the West Regional is regarded as the easiest track to the Frozen Four. I think PCM's article, on the other hand, about the goaltending, has been thoroughly justified now. There can not be an argument whether or not Brandt would have done better.
  22. Good call. The Ref has to know that Vanek is doing what he believes is playing defensively. He can't cherry pick the entire game.

    No Excuses

I agree completely. UND will not be chokers for as long as Dahl is at the helm of SCSU, at least. And as for gameplay, I cannot comment on the game because I didn't see it, but from other games I watched, a lot of the goals that came at clutch times for most teams were when the team crashed the net. I've been saying all year long that the Sioux need to crash their net, especially the forwards. I've seen two forwards in the same corner with one other forward on the win and two dmen at the blue line. No one on the other side of the net. That's HORRIBLE. If you are going to overload one side of the ice, the D will move there and stifle it or at least clog it up. There's gotta be a way you can break up the D and still be strong in the corners. And once that is figured out, we have to implement it right away next season.
  24. I think UNH's performance ended Saviano's bid. I'm sure our ousting hurt Bo and Zpar's. If Lessard goes all the way, he'll have the WCHA's lone shot at the Hobey. Don't know if Lessard deserves it over ZPar, but he did have a great year and he was a Cinderella story of sorts. HOwever, with last year's Hobey going to a WCHA player, I wouldn't be surprised if Voce won it or even the long shot Saviano.
