Yesterday's Boston Globe Article on Seedings, etc.

He means Jordan. -
I have friends and family in Chicago. If you find out, let me know because then I can tell her.

Those are going to be exceptionally rare due to the fact that the Sioux logo is much more contraversial than the Geometric or the one that is currently used. The best I can say is to find a dealer in rare merchandise and ask if he can help you find it. Of course, even if you locate one on your own, you will pay dearly for it.

He'll just have to start his dive on the other foot that he usually does to protect it. -
I would normally agree, but the reason why I said JPar vs Holy Cross was for the sole purpose of giving JPar valuable tourney experience for when Brandt graduates. I do realize that Brandt is only a junior and there is always next season, but with Lammy coming in, who knows. Oh well. I'm not Blais so, just my opinion.

New Article on Holy Cross (from Boston Herald)
redwing77 replied to SiouxFanInBoston's topic in Men's Hockey
Well written article. This newspaper even spelled Parise right. And, unlike HB.com, got his year correct too. For an article that was meant to cover Holy Cross, it certainly does give justice to UND. Coach Pearl definitely has the right mindset as far as I can tell. He wants to find out where his team stands next to a truly big time team like UND. I also think he is excited because of all of UND's hype and the fact that his team rarely sees any action against western teams. New experiences can always be a good experience win or lose. Who knows, with all these Tier I and Tier II Junior A teams in the midwest (NAHL and USHL for example), perhaps this trip to CC may be good for recruiting purposes. -
JPar plays against Holy Cross. Brandt plays the rest.
-
You forgot something! Briggs has zero experience in the NCAA tourney and I don't believe JJ has any experience either.
-
In the West I agree. However, the UMD game, and the entire NE conference should be interesting. I think the only boring games will be the ones versus the top 3 #1 seeds in the first round. I cant imagine a first round upset on a #1 team.

There's always Zajac. I actually can't wait to hear how he pronounces it. I'm expecting either "Sajack" or "Zahjahss"

Vanek being on the penalty kill just tells me just how good the pK unit is and how no team in the WCHA shouldn't be able to score on the PK unit. Here's my reasoning: 1. Vanek doesn't play defense, which means there are 3 other players on the ice at the time that are 1) trying to actually play defense and 2) trying to spring Vanek for the SHG. Those three players alone, should they kill off the penalty, show just how good the PK unit is. 2. Teams should score when Vanek is out on the PK because there are only, really, 3 players on the ice on the PK with one floating around near the blue line not playing D at all (Vanek). Therefore, it is really a 5 on 3 power play with a pylon near the blue line that can move. Even writing this post I am even more impressed with Vanek's PK linemates now.

Briggs has held up thus far, but the good news is that so has th Gopher Offense. The Final 5 Championship game was NOT a defensive struggle. It was simply the last team to score would win the game. Gophers scored last, and they won. DON'T discount the Gophers. Lucia is a playoff wizard. He always can convince the team to pull one out of their breezers when it really matters.

All I'm saying is I like players who never turn it off or on. Players who focus on both sides of the game. Players who never give up. Players who play smart and not give up on being spirited. Vanek is excellent on the offensive side. I don't like his defensive ability. His ability to be like Randy Moss is staggering. One minute he's amazing and the next he's undeserving of even being dressed. That's why everyone likes Zach. Oh, he may not be the prolific goal scorer that Vanek is, but he never gives up, always works hard whether his team is up by 7 or down by 12. He plays both sides of the puck and does so well. He's by no means one dimensional. Sure he's smallish 5'11", but he has heart. Not even the staunchest of Gopher supporters can deny that Zach is a good hockey player even if they don't think he's the best. I buy into Blais' coaching style. He likes them in for both sides of the game, not just one.

I agree. Didn't we look like this in 2000 when we lost in the Final Five and went on to win the NC? Yeah, Vanek is a cherry picker. A solid single dimensional hockey player with an attitude problem. When he is on offense, he's good, but he has no defense. His cheap shot was indeed a cheap shot, but that's about all I can say. Defensive liability and all, the NHL needs goal scorers and that's what Vanek is. He deserved to be drafted 5th overall. But some of the best wingers in NHL history weren't even drafted in the first round. Brett Hull, for example, was drafted in the 6th round. Luc Robitaille, one of the best LW in NHL history, was drafted in the 9th round. There were first rounders in the 1984 draft that didn't even make the NHL (Quinn was drafted in the top 10 and never played in the NHL). Craig Redmond was drafted #6 overall and only played 3 seasons in the NHL. Petr Svoboda, that year's #5 pick lasted only 7 years, and one of those seasons was spent in the Czech Republic. Patrick Roy was a 3rd rounder that year and he's the best goaltender to play the game. Draft position means nothing really.

FINE! Irmen's performance against UMD. Happy? What was the all tourney team? I can't find any info about it? I know that Bo made the team and that Briggs was MVP, but who else made it?

Parisi is Zach's Sicilian cousin. Connected with the mafioso, ya know? Word has it that the Committee is going to be given an offer they cannot refuse, which in turn will give Zach the Hobey. I think this article, otherwise, is well written. It doesn't belittle either side. It doesn't show up either side. It just shows a Holy Cross team that is elated to be where they are. If I am correct, Holy Cross went from worst to first in the AHA to earn its first NCAA berth. I am actually happy for their accomplishment, but drawing UND is not a great thing. This isn't really NCAA basketball, where 15 or 16 seeds can defeat 1 or 2 seeds without miracles. HC has already far exceeded their expectations and has had an excellent season to this point. Just being in the NCAAs is honor enough. They won't be too upset when we beat them. If they upset: HC for the NC.

Hey, as for your dmen being better than ours, how many goals a game did they give up? Now look at ours. WHOOOPSIES! I guess you just are wrong. I WILL admit that the Gophers have better OFFENSIVE defensemen, but hey, Blais recruits dmen with defense first in mind, offense second. We have our offensive defensemen, but they just don't stand out next to the Gophers D. What we DO stand out in is our stingy defensive power. Go take your "Our Dmen are better than yours" crap and shove it. On other notes to all: If you want to pick on the Gophers fans, do so to morons who malign the Sioux with no information to back them up. sagard, Greyeagle, and (sometimes ) WPoS tend to be quite rational. Heck, I don't see many Gopher fans posting on this board that agree that Parise's incident with Vanek was a cheap shot except for sagard and Enforcer. Vanek is indeed bigger than Prpich. The question is: When Prpich decks Vanek, is he going to dive to the ground and play injured or is he going to punch back? My guess is that he'll do the former. Prpich would tear Vanek into shreds if fighting were allowed. And, by the way, the reason why Vanek didn't get 5 was because Adam didn't want to be responsible for taking Vanek out of the first round of the NCAAs.

As far as I noticed, I'm the only one who doesn't like Taylor. The reason? Well, if it was only about hitting people and taking them out of the play, I'd say he's a physical player. Taylor hits alright, but then clutches and grabs and holds. Does anyone remember how he seemed to think that in order to show how cool he was and how strong and physical he was that he had to take down one of the smallest players on the Sioux? Hell, you want to impress me, take out guys your own size. Wow! You took down Brady Murray or Robbie Bina, all 5'8-5'10 of them. Good for you! Taylor runs into Porter, Greene, or Jones and I guarantee you he is flat on his ass. Clutch and Grab, dude. It is what Taylor excels in. He is a goon, plain and simple with nothing more to add to the Gophers than a simple rub out play. As for Ballard, I don't question is on ice ability. He's VERY talented and a great offensive force. I don't think he's as good as Frank Mazzocco claims he is (which, if you recall, was much higher praise than Parise or Potulny or anyone else and yet, gee, if he's so great how come his rights have been possessed by, what, three teams now?), but he is talented. I'd rather have a player who can hit and be a good defensive force like Jones, Ballard, Tallackson, and Greene than just a guy who knows how to get away with interference and holding calls (Taylor).
-
Im going with PCM and the scout about Greene. Matt is indeed ready for the NHL, but I hope he doesn't leave. The WCHA Tourney game was his worst ALL season long. And last year Greene vs this year Greene.... two different players altogether. And I hope Taylor gets rocked right out onto the street

That would leave the CHA and AHA with wannabes and third rate teams right? Duluth knows what they're doing. You can tell by who they hired. Sandelin is a GREAT coach and a SUPERB recruiter. He may not land the Vaneks or the Parises, but he lands quality players that may have slipped under the radar (Lessard, Schwabe, Reichmuth) that contend night after night because they have skill, but they also have chemistry. I think the Bulldogs blend well together on the ice. You can have a team of superstars and flounder terribly (NY Rangers?). This will never happen with the Bulldogs. UMN, UMD, and UND will be fighting for #1 in the WCHA for many years to come. I'm sure of it.
-
I agree about Irmen, but not about Irmen's performance against UMN. I think the recognition is due that an, at best, mediocre penalty kill of Minnesota managed to score short handed on the Bulldogs. SHGs should be a rarity and Irmen made it look easy.
-
With all due respect: One doesn't call a team that beat you 4 out of 5 times a second rate program. Yeah, you beat them in the end and you beat us too, but every team loses eventually and sometimes even the best teams fall on their faces. The Gophers played better in the Final Five than the Bulldogs and the Sioux and they have the Broadmoor to show for it. Calling a Bulldog team that hasn't been this good since, perhaps, the mid 80s second rate is a little bit ludicrous. That being said, MSU vs tUMD will be the game to watch in Grand Rapids as I have no doubt that Minnesota will handle their opponent easily.

Campion changed after his injury. I'm not sure he's really happy right now. He should have sat the rest of the year out. HOWEVER, I do believe he's the better of the refs I've ever seen. Plus he's a nice guy. Adam is ignorant, but not that bad. Mason is a dangerous ref to have on the ice if you are a player (He tends not to make calls that would protect players from injury), Shep makes penalties up and will rarely give either side an advantage even if they deserve it via penalty, Anderson couldn't ref his way out of a paper sack that has the bottom cut out, Hunt <No comment due to only seeing him once>.
