Getting back on topic, here's some educational resources I've found: Here's something from Native Health on Graduation rates in Sioux Falls, SD. Article Perhaps these students would do better if they changed the name of the town. Here's some information from 2000 about the Native American Graduation rates per state. 56% that year. Wow. I wonder what it was in 2004? In all defense, the number HAS been growing... I couldn't find anything about the absentee rate among Native Americans in schools. I don't know if that is a statistic that the schools keep track of.

Karl Goehring. He was the biggest 5'7" goaltender to play DI since 1987

FSU has enough money to make a court case very unpleasant for the NCAA. The NCAA assumes that, since we are a smaller school, we won't be as scary to face. My opinion.

Did you read that paragraph? If he comes back this season it could be an inspirational spark? That may be so (despite the medical redshirtting makes this impossible), but he's certainly not a player to watch because, as stated earlier, he's medical redshirting. HE WON"T BE ON THE ICE TO WATCH! So, yeah, perhaps the author of this article doesn't know much beyond what the people at Minnesota tell him. If he watched any games against the Sioux and read other scouting reports he might have come up with the fact that Bina's inability to play for medical reasons might exclude him from that category and put someone that people will be watching, such as Brian Lee, Travis Zajac, Drew Stafford, Rastislav Spirko, TJ Oshie or Jonathan Toews (to name a few) in that category. He should have looked at our team, instead of all the articles on Bina. No offense to Bina.

An Abstract theory on the ongoing discussion.
redwing77 replied to engelbunny's topic in UND Nickname
This is precisely it. Thanks Engelbunny -
Hey GK, Losing the battle again, eh? Is that why the A------ and namecalling is going on? Obviously you have no idea what is going on and you have come to the conclusion that it is better to label us all racists because of our skin color and our beliefs being different than yours (Isn't that the definition of racism?). Obviously you'd rather call us names than even attempt to understand our position. You think of yourself as "right" and us as "the racist wrong" and you cannot fathom there being anything else. I do pray that you are not indicative of what the Sioux people really are because if they act how you act and resort to what you resort to, then maybe there is no understanding to be made, no respect to be shared, and certainly no sympathetic ear to be talked into from our "side of the fence."

That'd be the thing wouldn't it?

It's a Cherokee story. They aren't Sioux. GK will just roll his eyes at this. Seriously, though, good find!

You defeat my point The worst thing you can say to an actor is that you've "Never Heard of HIm" Especially when he holds himself as a celebrity.

Great post Sioux-cia. Both this latest one and the last one. GK- Are they? I'm interested to know these things: 1. How many NA kids actually graduate from high school? 2. How goes the fight against alcoholism? 3. How goes the search to find a single instance of intolerance that is proven in paper that is 1990 or newer? Ok, I could have shortened this to: How is life in the past? 4. How many NA people decided to leave the reservation and strike out on their own to make a name for themselves, not relying on government or casino handouts? Is this number even on the rise? 5. Once the name is changed, how much higher will these numbers get? Will they immediately jump to the level American students (black, white, asian Americans, etc.) are holding at? I can see it now and it is beautiful, GK. MOrning after name change: "WHEW! It is a glorious day! UND's nickname is no longer there and we can FINALLY get over 90 percent high school graduations, a cure for alcoholism, and an end to federal handouts!" Is that what you are saying? I really would like to know because if it is, then I'm 100 percent for the name change just to watch something like that happen.

quiet stoicism? More like pervading apathy. By the way, my folks are from Chicago too. Maybe that's why they have such a strong opinion on the matter (despite neither of them ever attending UND. Yes, their opinion is different than mine. They're in the: NCAA hasn't the right to tell UND to change the name, but the NA people should indeed be listened to more crowd)

Careful mksioux. When the extreme left (like GK et al) gets taken to task on the issue, they will eventually start name calling. It happens in Washington, on the news, in ND, everywhere. They cannot stick to the facts and they have no use for the word "compromise." This is why GK has never once tried to understand our side of the story by approaching with respect. He has just posted inciteful material that call us all racists regardless of what reasons we may have and call UND a bastion of racism and demoralization despite the fact that he claims he likes UND. All our beliefs are meaningless at best, racist at norm because of our skin color and because we do not agree with him. Sounds racist to me.

You seem to think so, GK. You seem to think that the only thing that is holding the Sioux tribes down is our nickname. But hey, I'm not going to name call. So I deleted the post.

I reread it. You're right cheppi. But he is a liberal. When liberals start losing the battle, or when ever everyone gangs up on them, they do start name calling. In all fairness, it isn't just GK who does it. Look at Washington. I find it very sad that he is calling people deadbeat dads or bastards. I may disagree with GK in most of what he says, but I don't believe he's what he name-calls us.

Don't worry, the whole thing doesn't make sense. GK and his ...... "friends" don't want to work to a compromise. They want complete and total surrender by the University on this issue. Working with the University and its students and alumni is only to be accepted upon the agreement to remove everything from the name. It is exactly this type of extreme liberalism that makes me want to scream! It's funny really. They step forward and say, "We believe in this institution! We think we can work with everyone to find a name that is beneficial to both sides!" And then they say "We want them to change the nickname." Ok... wait... hold on.... You want to compromise or you want to change the nickname? It's one or the other. If it changes, there is no compromise. If it is alterred perhaps, but alterred isn't the terms used and it seems like compromise isn't an option anyways. Then it gets better. "UND is a great institution where Native Americans can go to get a great education" yet UND is also representative of everything the South represented during the Civil War apparently as the Fighting Sioux logo is our confederate flag. HUH? I'm sorry, but I'm afraid that that doesn't make sense. You can't have it both ways. I am open to changing the nickname. But I am: 1. Opposed to the anti-nickname crowd having any input on the name change. 2. For the name change crowd pays for some of the fees in changing the nickname. 3. Apart from those entitlements the Federal and State grants mandate and directly fund, all NA groups and organizations will no longer be treated any differently than white or other minority groups and organizations. Special treatment spreads hate as GK stated in a different thread. I don't think we should do that any more. So basically, unless mandated specifically, all NA ties should be severed the minute the nickname changes. GK is right. All this special treatment isn't honoring their people. So it needs to end. The NA people can earn what they need now instead of having it given to them like they are some spoiled child in need of coddling.
