  1. Kracker in a tribal nations meeting recently heald in Los Vegas Tribal Chiefs were asked about the use of tribal names and mascot. A very interesting answer to the question was given by an 82 year old tribal chief when he said "Would they use any name that they"the schools, students and alumni wouldn't be proud of.... theywon't call themselves the skunks."
  2. Mark is that you? If it is I see that you still like to stir things up just like at SMC. I wasn't sure but the more of your postings I read the more I believe it is you my friend and you know who I am as well. I think back to all the philosphical discussions we had you know me and my friend you are wrong on this one once again. You always thought that the white man had motives. But all you need to do is look in the mirror and ask who really has them.
  3. Racism is a state of mind and from what I've read following my intial posting on this subject. I know there is racism on both side Enough already!! The color of a person skin is the only thing that distingishes us from one another and that is only skin deep underneath that their is no difference. It's time for all to learn from the past and move in to the future. Was there injudice done to the Sioux and other tribal nations in the country? yes. Is there continued prejudge on both sides? yes. Can we change the past? no. But we can learn from it and make things better. There is racism on both sides but it is shrinking. It is time to grow up and quit acting like a bunch of children. If Grahmcracker thinks that it bothers me that he uses that name I petty him it doesn't. I've been called much worst by better individuals and it doesn't bother me. I've had a good taste of racism and I admit that it is a daily stuggle for me to fight my own feelings but I am man enough to face the fact, are you? The University of North Dakota provides an opportunity of all people to come together and learn from one another and grow together. Racism attempts to divide us and stick us in to pigeon holes. From the time I've graduated until now I've seen the University offer more opportunities to the Native Americans than any other state funded University. Does that sound like an instution that is disrepectful of a peoples? I think not! is there room for continued improvement of course there is and we must do it together. Be it as the University of North Dakota "Fighting Sioux" or The University of North Dakota "Fighting Whities" Eventually with the interracial marriage (which will happen) we will eliminate racism and then what will you fight over? No matter how those few in each group wants to keep "racial purity" it isn't going to happen!!!
  4. Here is some hyipocritical things about the NCAA they left there headquarters in Kansas City (Overland Park, KS) to move to INDIAN-apolis in INDIAN-a for big $$$$$$. Now if we have to change our name I think they should have to move back to Kansas City also see post on "The Death of a Nation"
  5. This is a sad day for the Sioux Nation and I'm speaking of the Tribe not the University of North Dakota. Why do I say this? They will be dying off into history just as the Aztec's, Myian's, and other cultures in Central and South America. They will become a forgotten people with no temples or other long standing icons of the culture left behind for history to remember them by. I had the fortune to work for the Sioux Tribe for almost five years at Sioux Manufacturing Corporation and worked side by side with Sioux Tribal members. In the time I worked at FT. Totten you could count the number of Tribal member who complained about UND using the Sioux nickname on one hand with fingers left over. I served on the Little Hoop Community College Advisory board and initiated the Native Americans into Engineering program with both UND and NDSU, to meet the needs of the manufacturing companies at Ft. Totten. Enrolled tribal members through education at Little Hoop, UND & NDSU and internship at the plants we hoped to move the tribal members into higher paying positions and assist them in betterment for there people. In implementing the program the tribal members that participated in the program were referred by some tribal members as "Apples", red on the outside white on the inside. When I asked about this I was told by some of the individuals who were particpating in the program that members of there own families didn't like them trying to improve themselves to help the family by getting a better education and helping there people. One said "we hold one another back." I see this pattern again with the use of ths Sioux name, Logo and Honor in the name. While I'm not a trbial member of the Sioux Tribe I can be an enrolled member of another tribe if I so desire, and I may some day. I look at the use by the University of North Dakota of the name Sioux as one that is of pride for all people who have an once of Native American blood flowing through there veins. One suggestiion that may make a difference is if the "Fighting" was dropped from the Sioux, these are a very proud and caring people who have been dishonered in the past and have little trust in people until you show them your hearts and true intentions. There will be tribal members who read this and will know who wrote it and those tribal members who know me know me as an honest individual. It took six months before a member of the Sioux tribal member learned to trust me. I was asked sometime later if I was prejudice I replied that I was to his surprise and then I asked him if he wanted to know what my prejudice was, to which he replied yes. I said "my prejudice is ignorance." Let us all work together to keep the name of the Sioux people alive in a respectful manner and not the way of other cultures to be lost in history for all time.

  14. The kids name is Thomas Ecklund he was the Quarterback who lead Park Hill to there first ever State Championship in big Class 5 against the defending State Champions. He Rushed for something like 107 yds and knocked three players out of the game one LB and two DB's and someone told me he weighed about 175 then. His highschool coach told our teams head coach pound for pound he was the strongest player on the team. He is strong, very quick, and hard to bring down. I could see him as a RB, Slot Back, DB or Outside LB. I was amazed when I saw him you guys must have a heck of a conditioning program!
