Lacrosse is more like hockey for those who don't know how to skate, really. Yeah, I know that's used to describe basketball players, but the similarities between lacrosse and hockey are just amazing. Either way though, even if we droped DI women's hockey and added DI women's lacrosse, it wouldn't sell. Other than basketball, I don't see women's sports being that popular here. And, for what it is worth: I have mixed emotions about Title IX. I believe women deserve equal opportunities to athletics but I don't believe it should be at a cost to men's athletics. I don't know how to do it, but I do believe that both should be able to coexist without hurting each other. Right now, it's at the point where Universities have to turn down opportunities because, if they took the opportunity, they'd have to create an accompanying women's sport that will negate, if not worse than negate, any profitable venture that opportunity would give to the school. For example, if John Wayne State University (home to the Gunslingers), who already had men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, men's football, and men's and women's track and field teams, was offerred entrance into a DI lacrosse league for men's for a substantial discount, if you will, they wouldn't be able to do it because then they'd have to add another women's sport of some kind that there is no guarantee that there is a conference for and probably isn't a market for. Therefore, whatever is gained by adding men's DI lacrosse (assuming that it is popular), is totally eliminated by Title IX and, more than likely, JWSU would have to pass up the opportunity. Maybe that sounds harsh on women's sports. However, it is what is happening.

She looks like she's 18 in that picture! Anyways, it's a loss. She didn't tear up the place though (124-128 as head coach). But in Buning we trust. I think there are good coaches available. Who knows who will take her place.

Wouldn't a player playing well on a bad team make him stand out more? What makes Klenow so overrated? Any player, IMO, who can singlehandedly make a team better, even if the team still doesn't amount to much during the season, has to be given respect. From what I understand, Klenow is one of those players. That being said, take my opinion with a grain of salt. I'm the "loser" a few weeks back who had the unmitigated gall to say that Red River and South were the two best teams in the state. And, yes, I'm going to hold that over the heads of those who disagreed with me at that time because I like being right and I don't mind pointing it out.

I think you have one of the two major reasons square on the head. Everyone likes the local boy. The other reason is that both are capable goaltenders. I mean, how many teams out there have a constant argument going on about which goaltender is better? If one truly was better than the other, there would be no debate! All of this argument simply proves one thing: The Sioux have TWO good goaltenders.

IIRC, Hasselback had better numbers than Roethlisberger, but Ben had a mammoth game on the ground. Here's a conspiracy theory for you all: Pittsburgh got hosed by the officials vs. Indianapolis and overcame it to head on to the next round. The NFL issued a statement stating that the call that could have cost Pittsburgh the game was incorrect. The Super Bowl basically was the reverse. The NFL head of officials told the head official on the field to lay off of the Steelers. Kindof a makeup game with a good feeling twist (Bettis and to a smaller effect, Ben's winning a Super Bowl at 23 years of age). Was this game fixed? If you believe that conspiracy theory I just said, yes. Do I believe it was fixed? No. I believe the officials wanted air time. I voted incompetant. But we'll never know. The NFL embarrasses itself enough with those statements of apology during regular season and playoff games. They'll NEVER admit to wrong doing in a Super Bowl.

Well... NE does play cheap so, if they injure enough players and run the Harvard goaltender enough, maybe they will. Otherwise, I can't see Harvard losing.

I agree. I like JPar a lot, but I agree that he's no Karl Goehring. I don't think he'd be Karl G even if he did win a title. Karl Goehring was good enough at times to win games all by himself in the way that he could steal the game from under the opponent even when the players in front of him played very poorly. Jordan Parise and Phil Lamoreaux are NOT game stealing goaltenders. So I would liken neither one to Karl Goehring. HOWEVER, would you all rather have a great goaltender like Elliott or Goephert and a backup sieve like say, Montgomery or whomever or would you rather have two goaltenders that can come in on any given night and play well enough to provide their team a chance to win? Trust me, I like Goepfert and Elliott, but I'd rather have two goaltenders that can play rather than one that has to handle the load by himself. As for who plays when, I think that's Hakstol's decision to make. So far, when we've lost, it hasn't been because of goaltending really. It's been because our offense has been inconsistent or we've taken an ill timed penalty and it cost us. We're SO used to goaltending being the issue after Karl played here that I believe we have trouble seeing past it.

How about a thread about High School hockey in North Dakota? Oh wait, there is one! It's right here!!!! Oh, and by the way, it's 'sophomores' Now go back to your school work for your 3rd period world history class at Valley Middle School.

"Buddy buddy" accountability. In DI basketball and DI football (sticking to DI sports), there is much more on the line. Many more fans watching the games, expecting the quality all around to be the best, from the players and coaches, to the lowly ticket tearer and every point in between, including officials. DI hockey doesn't have that atmosphere. Without the "fear" of the public wrath over quality of officiating that is seen in DI bball and football, DI hockey will always be a site for substandard officiating.

Jordan Parise has a GAA between 1.5 and 2.0 in NCAA play with a Save% of around .940. I mean, comon. Let's face it. If we don't have two goaltenders who can play, we're just going to fail in the long run.
-
Why do you target our players?!? Secondly, WTH happened to Isaac? When I saw him his freshman year (I think it was), I thought to myself "my Parise, this guy's something special." And, after his frozen four appearance, he just tanked. I don't understand it.

Ok a few things: 1. I love the underdogs, so I was rooting for Seattle too. 2. What? A thread about officiating? YOu HAVE to expect me to chime in sooner or later. Yes, there is an accountability program in the WCHA for officials. It has shown up, but VERY rarely do the fans notice it. Every now and again, an official would run Friday night but do so horribly, that another official would replace him for the Saturday night game. This is rare, though. Don Adam recieved a 1 month suspension after the DU/UND tilt. Regardless of why he only got a month if he even got a suspension at all is all conjecture, but there is an accountability program in the WCHA. The program, IMO, seems far too "buddy buddy" than I'd like, but that's how things go. Stupid/bad calls are a reality in the league, which is why I (as critical of the officials as I am) don't expect perfection every game. I DO expect consistency though. Perfection is impossible to obtain. Consistency is difficult, but VERY possible. One thing I noticed is how in the NBA and NFL, when a bad call is made, more often than not the league office will admit that the call(s) in question were not properly made and apologized for the disgrace. No such thing in the WCHA. I feel it gives off an aura of arrogance that the horrible calls that are sometimes called aren't horrible at all regardless what is thought by everyone else, including on those occasions where the team that benefitted acknowledged that the call was sketchy at best. I understand that Greg Shepherd can't come down hard on all of the officials. Officials that are good enough and qualifed enough to perform in DI hockey are hard to find. They are also hard to adequately pay, which makes attracting that kind of official difficult. However, Greg Shepherd has done little to nothing about fixing problems that everyone except for him knows exist. The best example is the NCAA crackdown on obstruction. While it runs rampant in the WCHA, Greg issues a statement stating how the WCHA hasn't really had to call that many because it doesn't exist. When he said that, I wondered if he truly was at the games they said he was in attendance for. Obstruction is still a problem. With the failure, year after year, to improve official consistency, address NCAA mandated problems and the problems as expressed by the fans, players, and coaches/administrative types within the WCHA, I've come to the conclusion that the solution to the problem isn't to fire all of the officials, but to fire the administrator and get someone in there who isn't ignorant of the problems of the league. Therefore, Greg Shepherd should not have been hired full time with the WCHA. He should have been either asked to resign/retire, or fired. By the way, if you want to know what obstruction-free hockey looks like, tune into the NHL. If the NHL can do it, why the hell can't we?

What did I do? Oh, and by the way, Foyt's 2 assists came when he played forward, so I don't think you can count that on the stat sheet Marvin's assist MIGHt also be when he was playing forward as well. Same thing with some of Bina's assists as he did play some at forward last year.

I was bored and ended up watching the UMN vs MSUM women's hockey game today while doing laundry. I could really care less about the score (I think Minny won) but what I noticed was the skill level of both teams. They were really good passers (despite MSUM icing it like 8 straight times in the 3rd period), fast, followed through, and excellent forecheckers. Also, I wish we could have gotten Gigi Marvin

No ability is 2nd or 3rd in the WCHA in scoring? No ability is goaltenders who, though they aren't tearing up the league, are at least consistent enough to give the team in front of them a decent idea what to expect from them and what is needed to win? No ability is to have 9 freshmen in the lineup on any given night and still be in the running for a playoff berth? I think TC is more than venting. I think TC is just a classless fan. Lucia has his own methods and whether that is classy or not, it's subjective. But I don't think Lucia has ever openly flamed other teams over their season results even with certain comments that can be construed in negative ways. Lucia is a damn fine coach, regardless of who he coaches. He did well for every team he's coached. I think that comparing Lucia to Hakstol at this point (Lucia in his nth year as a Head Coach and Hakstol in his 2nd year) is rather harsh. Lucia is classy compared to some of the fans of Lucia's team.

As maligned as you have been by some here, I sure hope you are right.

At this point, I could care less about WCHA standing. All I want to do is to make the NCAAs. We aren't out of the picture on that, but we have to play sharper than this. 2 games. Back to back good games. I'd love to see that. "We haven't been as good playing with the lead." Well... we haven't been that good coming from behind either. We can't count on winning games by 2+ goals every time. We have to find ways to win tight games. Jones' penalty was crap. NO, it wasn't a bad call, it was a crap call. Jones can play physical but we HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO start learning when and where to hit the guy. I mean, 10 or 11 CFB Majors? Wow. Sounds like we don't have a clue when not to hit the other guy. I love physical game play, but we've got to learn to hold up sometimes.
