  1. Why? It's growing apparent that this type of thing is acceptable only if it is your ethnic group you are slurring. It's why it's ok for a black person to call another black person the N word. An NA person calling another NA person a Redskin isn't inflammatory in the least. A NA person wearing a Fighting Sioux or a Redskin shirt should be no different. What is alarming is that it seems ok for an NA or a black person to be racist against whites but not ok for it to be the other way around. It shouldn't be ok for racism to exist against ANY ethnic group, majority or minority.
  2. I say we beat the NCAA, take them for a ton of money by winning the case and suing for damages, and then change the name using funding used normally to assist the NA students. Well, that could bring up some arguments but, as it appears from the name change crowd that changing the name would help the NA students so it wouldn't be misappropriation of funds. That way it would be the same as giving the nCAA the middle finger saying screw you for breaking the rules and then giving the Sioux tribes the middle finger saying "We could have used the Sioux nickname and we want you to know that we could but it isn't worth it." Viva the Fighting Cav!
  3. Ok, tangent a little here, but... What do you all think of the blending (overlap) of the Pow Wow with a beauty contest?
  4. I don't look at amounts of penalties a defenseman gets as anything really that tell-tale regarding his play other than the fact that the defenseman getting all the penalties is either: 1. Young and inexperienced 2. Plays an exceptionally physical game. If you hit hard enough, eventually you are going to get called for it simply for the ferocity of the hit itself can sometimes make it look illegal. Of course, those 2 reasons assume that the defenseman in question isn't 1. just a bad defenseman and 2. Not a cheap, cheating numbskull. Hale, Commodore, and Greene have one thing in common. They play hard-nosed, in your face, hard core physical hockey. I guess Mullet Melrose (I think?) would call it "smash mouth" hockey. Hence, they spend a lot of time in the box because they're always hitting someone.
  5. Forgot to mention that Zach Parise got an assist on the only NJ goal. Hale and Commie each spent 2 minutes in the penalty box.
  6. I wish the Devils won. They lost 4-1. Something just didn't click for this entire series for the Devils. Too bad for Zach and David. I think they played ok. Good news for Canes fans though. I hope the Canes go all the way this year. They will have to be smart though. Ottawa was a team of idiots in OT in their last game vs. the Sabres and they paid for it (Gee, I wonder why 4 Sabres were better than 5 Senators? Probably because they weren't paying attention to the fact they were up a man. No excuses whatsoever for losing the game in that fashion. NONE). I think Buffalo exits in 6 games.
  7. Wow. Greeney, I can't believe you said those two things: 1. First, no matter what you think, right or wrong, you have to remember that Hockeymom is a women's hockey fan whether she agrees with you or not. Right or wrong isn't dictated by whether or not someone agrees or disagrees with you. If it were, I could say that the sky is green and you'd be wrong because you said it was blue. It's not. It's green because I said so and those who disagree with me are wrong. 2. The gender card. I'm loving that one. It's like "The only reason why that man is going to prison is because he's black!" No, the only reason why that man is going to prison is because HE COMMITTED A CRIME. Gender-schmender. Gender and race cards are only used when you have nothing to back up your claims. They are meaningless antagonistic charges that don't hold water anymore. Like Rivard or don't like her, that's not the issue. Gender isn't the issue here. Rivard isn't panning out, but this will be the first (?) season where UND has a full compliment of scholarshipped players on the women's side of the arena. Maybe that factors into it. Maybe you are right and that, if Rivard were the coach of the men's team she'd be fired, but why wouldn't she? The men's team is a storied team with tons of history and tradition. The women's team is new, unburdened by a long history and the high expectations that go along with it. This team is entering a conference where they have to face three programs (UW, UMD, and UMN) that are already "storied" and is expected to compete right away? Sorry, you're flat out wrong. I don't hold any expectations of the women's team. Maybe Buning doesn't either. That may be a problem, but really, it's out of our hands. I don't know of any who post here that is supportive of Rivard or think she's a quality head coach, but I don't think the decision to retain or firing can be laid down by comparing the women's team to the men's team and throwing out the gender card to wave around like a petulent child. EDIT: And one last thing: bringing in her kid and then insulting the kid's mother is just low in my opinion.
  8. David Hale had an assist today too. He also had 2 penalties. Commie had 2 penalties too. EDIT: Anyone catch the OT winner Pomminville scored on the Sens tonight? It reminded me a TON of BC's player doing us in beating Goehring back in 2001. Only it was done short handed tonight. So, how's dem apples? The Sens get a gift PP and they let the Sabres have the only chance that PP had in it. Sens deserved to lose because they forgot about the #1 rule in a PP situation: NO Short handed chances.
  9. They are protesting this? Are they saying that the Sioux logo caused his death because of the hostility the logo causes? I don't understand. Anyways, RIP John. P.S. Goon- Your golf clubs? What good have they ever done you?
  10. I've never golfed on Ray Richards when it wasn't in horrible shape. It's not a very well maintained course... at least when I've been there.
  11. Well, according to USCHO, there is a defenseman from Clarkson, I think, that is transferring to UND... so, is this a new beginning or are we becoming the women's hockey version of Quinnipiac?
  12. My golf game hasn't gotten past the driving range yet. Interestingly enough, over the offseason I apparently got better at my irons, but stopped being able to putt entirely. Oh, and my driving is still as crappy as before, with 60% more slice!
  13. I'd probably find it rather shocking before I'd find humor in it. Chris Heisenberg is extraordinarily well connected when it comes to these things. He's not perfect, nor does he necessarily rush to the computer the instant he hears something to update the website, but he's not that sluggish. BTW: I get that you were joking, but I had to say this.
  14. No, the word 'Red' is "hostile and abusive" to Native Americans so that's out.
  15. That's not what Woog said!
  16. Anyone have a prediction of how many posts until a full blown Gopher flame fest will erupt in this thread? In any case, the question has been answered, so I'm not sure this thread needs to remain open.
  17. No, but before the warmups start, there's always a chance Dolly Parton song "Loraine" or something like that. Dear Parise, you think the music is bad during warm ups or during the game, you should come when the doors open and listen to the music they pipe in before warmups... disgusting.
  18. I'm still not sure. If Marto isn't coming why aren't we seeing signs that LaPoint will be coming? LaPoint was taken 6th overall in the USHL draft which usually tells us that there is a high likelihood of him suiting up. On the flip side, we have Genoway coming in as a D/F combo player to a team that even without Smaby isn't that lacking on the defensive side of the game personnel wise. We are short forwards. If anything, this may point to Trupp coming early, not LaPoint.
  19. Goon- Though I'm relieved to see Kaip score a few goals, I'm even more excited to see what he can do defensively next season. I am still VERY serious when I think he can step right in and fill the skates of Mike Prpich. Rylan may not have the hype in that regard Prpich had, but I think he can do just as good of a job. If Rylan is as defensively responsible, plays with the same tenacity Prpich did, and keeps contributing offensively as much as Prpich did (which wasn't huge by any means, but it was valuable when it happened), Rylan will become a HUGE and valuable part of the team.
  20. Yeah. Unfortunately I had a coworker who was really big on Blur when that song came out and so I found out way more about that song than I needed to know.
  21. I agree. It seemed like Porter's role was changing as the year progressed. His numbers went up despite his goal scoring numbers going down. He still works hard. He still plays hard. I still really think he's valuable to the team. That being said, I'm not down on his goal scoring numbers at all. I think he's played excellent season this past year and will have another good one next year. I liked the original post, but I can't agree with the lines he poses. Too many players out of place. I think it will be: Duncan-Toews-Kozek Forney(?)-Oshie-Porter Fabian-Kaip-Watkins Zajac-Miller-Vandevelde
  22. He stated earlier he was watching it on tv at his home in Ottawa.
  23. bolded are strong words in this poster's opinion. Words and actions are two different things. Look at Florida. When the NCAA did it to FSU, the state's governor, state government, and federal congressmen were up in arms and rattling sabres everywhere they could get printed/screened/broadcast. This thing has been in place for quite some time and this is the strongest stance Hoeven can make? Let's face it. With the exception of the Attorney General's office, I doubt we can expect much of anything of strength from our state or federal representatives.
  24. Buning was talking about changing the seating arrangements per the student seating issue earlier in the season. I wasn't at the meeting, but I did talk to Buning around the time the meeting took place and he said he would be considering a seating change for the students this off season. Of course, any seating arrangement change of the students' will affect the season ticket holders in the lower bowl. Take it for what it is worth.
