  1. Great news on MacWilliam returning. He is such a solid defensive dman, he will be a rock on the blueline next season as a senior.

Kind of disappointed that Nelson signed. I always just assumed Kristo would leave and Nelson would stay for one more year. Nelson never really took over a game like Kristo did...he was always in the right spot for those goals around the crease though. Nelson made such huge strides from his freshman to soph year once he added some bulk/muscle, I would only assume that next year he could have really done well at UND. But I don't think he's quite strong enough yet to hang in the NHL, so would guess he'll spend all of next season in the AHL. Hopefully he doesn't end up regretting it like Gregoire and Hextall and wish he stayed another season. Best of luck, Brock.

Agreed I really thought Brock would be back and thought he benefited a lot from playing with Kristo and even though he had 28 goals I was suprised he left. I'm not trying to take anything away from him, but he had what 5 or 6 empty net goals and a lot of times he was setup for easier goals. Really very suprised about Nelson leaving and wish he would have stayed another year. I hope he has success and doesn't end up in the minors all year next year and come back to regret his decison like guys have in the past, but I kinda think that might be the situation. The only thing I can really think of with Nelson as he may feel this was gonna be his best year stat wise and didn't think he would be able to put up those kind of numbers again. I really hope it didn't have a whole lot to do with Garth Snow not thinking college hockey developed players very well. I think he will definitely have to get stronger to get to the NHL and really think it was a bad decison for him to leave, but definitely wish him the best of luck!

  2. Some good news From @UNDSID Andrew Macwilliam has informed Coach Hakstol he will return for his Senior year.

Hopefully potential good news? @UNDSID May still have news on at least 1-2 more players as early as today.

  4. If Dell decides that he's coming back, and with Saunders coming in wouldn't you think it would be logical for the coaching staff to have Gothberg play another year in Fargo?

Couple of factors come into play here to completely squash my theory:

~Unless he's too old (believe he still has a year of junior eligibility after this one).

~Unless they don't believe he will be a four year netminder for the school. Aka...flight risk before senior year, get the years you can out of him.

~He would de-commit and sign at another school if he doesn't end up at UND next year.

I'd just hate to see the kid come in, ride the bench, and play in six games. If Dell or Saunders got hurt you bring him in at Semester time or ASAP. He'd easily play in 45 plus games in the USHL for the Fargo Force. Just thinking out loud here....

Not sure if he is too old or not, I think I remember him being one of the older kids in his class however. I don't think he will go back to Fargo, I've seen the kid play since he was a Sophmore in high school and even played against hime a few times and know he will definitely compete for playing time next year and I would guess he will start as Dells backup but may end up splitting series with him and taking the job away if Dell isn't consistent enough. Zane is a kid that is gonna come in and do whatever it takes he is a very technical sound and calm goalie, but also relentless with the work ethic. There aren't many goalies that leave too early when they drafted as teams just let them develop, but who knows it could be a possibility I think he was a 6th? round pick of Boston. If he did have to go back I doubt he would decomit it has been a dream for him to play at UND, he has always wanted to be part of the Fighting Sioux program.

  5. As of now my lineup would be

    Nelson-Knight-Kristo

    MacMillan-Rowney-Grimaldi

    Rodwell-Parks-Koules

    O'Donnel-Pattyn-Gaarder

    St.Clair-Chyzk-MacMillan-

    Dickin-Dipuma?

    MacWilliam-Mattson

    Forbort-Schmaltz

    Simpson-Gleason

    Senkbeil-Panzerella

    Dell

    Gothberg

    Saunders

It will be nice to hopefully have some depth and create competition within the team where guys have to perform every practice to play on the weekends.

  6. The next couple of weeks will give us a good idea about next years squad. Obviously we say goodbye to a good group of seniors, but at the same time you always wonder who the flight risks are.

Here is what I think in concern to flight risks.....

    More than likely gone:

    ~Kristo

    50/50 Gone

    ~Nelson, Forbort

    Likely Back:

    ~Dell, MacWilliam

I would say the chances are better than 50/50 Nelson is back. I'm sure the Islanders will come after him hard, but from everything I here he really likes school at UND and his family has very strong feelings about him getting his degree. I think another off-season of gaining muscle and Nelson will be a real beast and he would be better of here then in AHL. I hope the guys that are thinking about leaving remember what guys like Gregoire, Hextall, Parise, and even Oshie said when they left early that they wished they woulda stayed another year because there is no place like UND.

  7. The Sioux looked better in the third period cause Minnesota played more of a defensive game while UND had to pressure more than normal down all those goals.

But you already realized that right?

The Gophers totally dominated the second period. Shots were like 88-1 Gophers.

The only thing close in this game was the first few minutes of the opening frame.

Did you actually watch the game? Part of the dominance in the 2nd period was the powerplays, but I agree the 2nd period was definitely not our best. The Gophers were still in attack mode in the 3rd, they went into defense mode in the final 5 and we all saw what happened and they weren't going to make that mistake again. The Sioux took a lot of chances in the 3rd and played desperate which could account some for the Sioux looking better in the 3rd, but it wasn't because the Gophers went into a defensive mode.

  8. We had a total of two shots on goal in the 2nd period. Two. One was Kristo's goal and one was just before the horn sounded. We were a step slower all game. All those odd-man rushes and breakaways wouldn't happen if we had a full and rested line-up. We fought hard from start to finish, but you can't win games like this on fumes. We struggled to finish off Western Michigan and I knew it would be hard today. But we didn't give up and didn't quit and I am proud of the team.

As for our friends in Rodentia, we'll see how good the Goofs are when they have to go up against a fully-loaded team in Tampa. This weekend, they beat a slow Boston University and an injury-depleted and tired North Dakota team. I would say good luck to them, but I won't because they would never do it for us.

I said we didn't get dominated the whole game which we didn't, I admit the 2nd period was not a good period for us.

  9. This is will be one of the more memorable teams in Sioux hockey history for me. They overcame so much adversity throughout the season and probably exceeded most peoples expectations. The team and coaching staff should be proud of their accomplishments this year, every player left everything they had on the ice and gave everything they could, the staff did a great job of getting every players best effort and finding a way to be successful no matter what happened. I want to thank Ben Blood, Mario Lamoreux, and Brad Eidsness for the great contribution they made to the University of North Dakota hockey program and a great career here, I wish them all the best of luck in the future!

  10. Let's also be honest. The Sioux looked tired and slow all game today. They looked totally unprepared and basically were dominated the whole game. Against a lower seeded team in the tournament.

Thats just not true, the Sioux were right with the Gophers for most of the game. I thought the Sioux were better for the most part in the 1st, the Gophers were better in the 2nd and took advantage of opportunities and it was pretty even in the 3rd, the Sioux were not totally unprepared and not dominated. Everyone knew this game was basically a toss-up and going to be a very tough matchup.

  11. I'm feeling alright about playing the Gophers again, you know the boys will be ready and it will be very intense. I think this will be the type of game where one mistake could make the difference. I hope for a very intense game and that the refs allow the players to decide the game and not make it a penalty fest.

  12. Shepherd's crew just blew another call. Union guy was offsides by 3 feet on an empty net goal shot from center ice. Union going to Tampa! crazy stuff

Yeah they definitely had a shaky couple games from what I saw of them, but hey we all knew that already and now some other teams got to experience it.

  13. Murray had a paper taped on the boards behind the bench with a Sioux logo on it!!! WM should have had to forfiet the game..

Haha I saw that too during the Western Michigan timeout.

I think the no goal call was a good call the Western player pretty much guided it into the net with his body and I believe the officials reason for no goal was they said the player directed it in with his upper body/arm.

  14. I would guess DeCoteau realized he wouldn't a great deal of playing time. I hadn't heard anything about Dulaney and, as you noted, we knew Butler and Anya-Gafu weren't going to be with the team.

Some newcomers that I wasn't aware of:

Jordan Christianson, a punter from Hurst, TX

Jay Daggett, a WR from Naples, FL

William James, a DB from Sweden (interesting!)

Bobby Gutierrez, a PK from Gainesville, TX (he is listed as a freshman but he apparently was at Northland CC)

Pat Brown, a WR from North Pole, Alaska (also interesting!)

T.J. Draeger, WR from Fargo North

    Marcus Laverdure, DL from Belcourt

Some of these guys are listed as redshirt freshmen so I don't know if they just showed up on campus between semesters are if they were with the team last fall but not on the roster.

Some notable changes in size (wt) from last year's fall roster:

WR Ivery +13 to 169 (added weight/strength some help)

RB Garman + 7 to 177 (same as above)

TE Nichols +20 to 245 (he is now TE size - I expect him to have a good year)

DL Jay Nelson -13 to 245 (hopefully, a better playing weight for him)

    LB Bennett +16 to 234

OL Hellman +42 to 302 (the Red River product must have been busy pumping weight and eating)

    OL Meehan +16 to 306

    OL Gillson +27 to 342

    DL Henson +12 to 298

    OL Windfeldt -14 to 296

OL Hoplin +20 to 265 (another RR product gaining some serious size)

    OL Deneui +11 to 304

WR Jackson +23 to 233 (he should be tough to bring down)

    WR Young +13 to 198

    DL Cummings +29 to 283

    TE Adler +22 to 237

    DL Woodsmill +19 to 234

    DL Brenneman +12 to 266

I played with Bobby Gutierrez at Northland and he went to high school at Crookston. He played 2 years at Northland, but his last season was 2010-2011 season so not sure why he wouldn't have walked on in the fall. I really wasn't to impressed with him, we often had to go for 2 pt conversions and only kicked 2 or 3 field goals all inside of 30 yards because he wasn't very consistent. I would say maybe he would be a kickoff guy only because he had a decent leg, but then again during one of the games later in the season we had to have someone else attempt an onside kick late in the game because he said he was too cold.

  15. no matter where your tickets are, you'll be able to move around fairly easily i think. i just remembered how lame these regional games are for atmosphere. long timeouts and the NC$$ propaganda on the screen during breaks make for a pretty sterile environment. those who haven't been to one, don't expect it to be like the final five that's for sure.

I remember when the Sioux hosted the west regional with Michigan, Minnesota, and Holy Cross now that was a great atmosphere for a regional, not sure if any regional will ever match that atmosphere.

  16. This is from FSN's twitter account a couple minutes ago

"College Hockey Fans - we'll have some exciting news for you around 11:00am, stay tuned..."

One would have to assume this is the regional

My brother said he e-mailed FSN yesterday and they said if they were able to purchase it would probably only be the Gopher game, so hopefully the guy that e-mailed him back was wrong or FSN changed their mind and decides to broadcast the whole regional.
