  1. Anyone else catch that the New York Rangers wanted Chris Krieder to quit on BC when they drafted him in 09 and instead head to the QMJHL. After finding out about this and the JT Miller situation I really hope none of our recruits are drafted by the Rangers. Wonder why the Rangers have so much against the NCAA, Stepan and McDonaugh have been very good for them.

  2. Not one of our recruits but I know we were talking about him during the Minnesota State High School tourney- Grant Besse will return to Benilde St. Margarets for his senior season. http://www.mnhockeyhub.com/news_article/show/143655

A good thing for high school hockey and love the quote from Besse "The thing that matters is just loyalty to the team. Before my freshman year I maybe wasn't as committed to the team, but after everything we've been through with Jack [Jablonski] and how close we've become, we're basically all brothers. I don't feel I could bring myself to let that go. I don't want to run off and play somewhere else and leave them hung out to dry."

  3. That is probably why he signed so early (at least 3 years of school paid for). I think he signed early because he wasn't going anywhere. He didn't make the cut for the Under 17 team and no other JR teams were calling and he knew if he stayed in Crookston (nothing against the program, just not that good) he probably wouldn't get any better, so he took the only available option. I'm not saying he made the right or wrong choice, him and his parents just made a choice he thought was best for him. I hope he does well and everything works out for him.

Really doubt that they were the only team interested in him from what I heard he had a spot on the development team if he wanted it, but didn't want to take that route. The main reason I'm so suprised he went to WHL is his dad is the Crookston coach who has been very vocal against players leaving early for the ushl and other leagues and hurting high school hockey. I thought he would play another year at Crookston with his brother and if he was gonna leave it would be after next season.

  4. Who knows what exactly the performance bonuses are and of course I'm sure he has to make the big club but it would be tough to turn down the contract. $2.8 million cap hit is easily the largest out there for an entry level contract.

    http://capgeek.com/p...lay.php?id=2225

This may be the biggest reason Brock Nelson ended up turning pro, Schlossman said it is one of the more lucrative contracts he has seen for a college signee.

  5. This might be a dumb question but i looked at seth's commitment and said he is uncommitted to a college....why are we taking about this kid if he is uncommited. Sorry if i am way out of the loop but i was wondering

He is a huge prospect and he has cut his choices down to either UND or the WHL, he is supposed to be a for sure top 5 pick in the 2013 NHL draft.

  6. Wow, I really feel sorry for a kid that struggle's that much with school. Hopefully this move works out for him as he really is limiting his options to just a hockey career. I could be wrong, but I believe CHL player's still have to attend High School while they are playing.

What I got out of it was kinda that he just doesn't care about school or whether he does the work, and I was told he was just plain stupid and not only when it came to schoolwork. I was in high school not too long ago and I would guess he was able to just get someone to do the work or compare answers with someone else on assignments and get by that way, I know thats what a lot of people at my high school did whether they were athletes or not, I mean I'm sure there were times where you get back from a game at midnight and you got homework due tomorrow morning and just say screw it and get the answers from someone before class.

  7. I found out some more information that may shed a little more light on Paul Bittner leaving for the WHL. A lot of players, parents, and fans are glad he's gone even though he was a good player and they wish his brother (will be SR D-man) and dad (Crookston head coach) were going with him. Sounds like a lot of team chemistry issues surronding him and the family not meshing with a lot of the players and some favoritism going on. I also found out Paul isn't a real big fan of school and has a fair of amount of trouble with schoolwork as a Freshman.

  8. Yeah like Kittson, LOW, Park Rapids, Bagley, etc.... Who are the competitive teams they play?

Hermantown, Duluth Marshall, Blake, St.Cloud Cathedral, Red Wing, Bemidji, Roseau, East Grand Forks, Thief River Falls, and Warroad. Don't get me wrong I'm not a fan of Crookston hockey since they were a high school rival and growing up I've played against them a number of times.

  9. Why not play a year or two of USHL and keep the options open instead of slamming the door shut? Fine Crookston hockey is a joke but there are other avenues than going to the W.

I don't know if its a joke, they aren't a top team but they do play a pretty competitive schedule. I was really suprised by his move, I figured he'd go back to Crookston and if he did leave it would be to Ann Arbor.

  10. I don't think Minnesota would be a possible team if Danny leaves and is a free agent, I believe their GM said they probably wouldn't sign any college free agents this year because they are at the contract limit, also don't think Danny would go there because they are loaded with prospects.

  11. I love the previous post with the Buffalo Bills reference. Given our record over the past decade, we are the Atlanta Braves of the 90's. One title, and bunch of "oh-so-close" years. We need to start sealing the deal.

On another note, I loved the point earlier about the 15+ NHL draft picks. NHL draft picks / potential NHL talent doesn't translate into titles. If we look at the 97 and 00 title years, the only NHL player that has made an "impact" is Jason Blake (please correct me if I am wrong). The services of Oshie, Toews, Parise, Zajac etc...got us close, but it didn't seal the deal. We need a mix of NHL potential, but we need more of the players that are more likely to stay 4 years or at least 3 years. I worry about picking up the rental players, like Seth Jones. I would love to have him, but I hate seeing players leave after one year. I know it is a far more complicated than this, but thought I would just throw it out there.

Regarding the Sioux Nickname issue.....If the vote decides to prolong this issue and we lose out on playing Wisconsin and Minnesota on an annul basis, it will be damaging to our program. I know we can stand on our own in the NCHC, but playing Denver, CC, Duluth, etc isn't going to cut it in terms of national exposure. I am worried about recruiting if we don't have the Gophers and Badgers on the schedule. Do you think it matters to Minn recruits if the Gophers aren't on the schedule?

I think recruits from Minnesota like to play them, but it doesn't matter a whole lot to them. Its not like its incentive to come here because we play the Gophers and the recruit got rejected by them like it can be with other programs. The majority of our Minnesota recruits have grown up Sioux fans and really hate the Gophers and want to be here because that has been their dream growing up. Overall I think it may have a small impact because recruits want to play them, but definitely not a deal breaker for a recruit.

  12. Goalies (3): Maris (Sr), Saunders (Jr), Gothberg (Fr)

Forwards (15): Rowney (Sr), Kristo (Sr), Knight (Sr), Rodwell (Jr), Mitch MacMillan (Jr), Dickin (Jr), Gaarder (So), Grimaldi (So), Mark MacMillan (So), O'Donnell (So), Parks (So), Pattyn (So), St. Clair (Fr), Chyzyk (Fr), Koules (Fr)

Potential Early Departures (2): Kristo (80/20), Forbort (20/80)

My early lines assuming no more departures:

    Chyzyk-Rowney-Rodwell

    Pattyn-Koules-St. Clair

    Extras: Mitch MacMillan, Dickin, Gaarder

    Forbort-Schmaltz

    MacWilliam-Mattson

    Simpson-Gleason

    Extras: Panzarella, Senkbeil

    Saunders

    Gothberg

    Maris

Schlossman tweeted a few days ago that the coaches really liked the way Senkbeil played at forward and would probably keep him there. Also does anyone know if DiPuma went to school and is still with the team?

  13. A few impressions after watching practice:

-Joey Bradley is looking good after a year in this offense. He definitely demonstrates good control and composure. However, despite a lack of system familiarity, the decisions made by Braden Hanson are the most impressive ones. He also can make all the throws, including a nice deep ball. There is no question he is still in the learning process in terms of the offense, but I still think he is the favorite to be starting August 30th.

-Jake Miller is looking quick like usual. He’s made some nice cutbacks demonstrating his field vision.

-Greg Hardin has been lighting it up. If Hanson or Bradley can efficiently deliver him the ball this fall, I expect big things from him. None of our DBs can cover him and he’s shown great hands.

-Jameer Jackson is a physical specimen (230 lbs); however, he still runs very smooth at that size. Matched up against our smaller DBs, he is constantly at the advantage and usually always is open. I definitely think if he can understand the mental aspect of the position, he could make a huge splash as a freshman this season.

-Transfer DL EJ Welch has good size and should help depth at the NT spot.

-Look for sophomore MLB Ben Peters to see a lot of playing time this season, if not possibly sneak into the starting lineup. He has great size and could be that “designated” player the coaching staff wants to replace Dan Hendrickson’s physical play, which will certainly be missed.

-K Zeb Miller and P Brett Cameron both are booming the ball well. Just like last year, our kicking game should be a definite strength of this team during the upcoming season.

-Like the depth I am seeing at corner. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same thing about safety. This position could end up being a huge problem area this season, especially under the circumstances of an injury. Really hoping Javen Butler can rejoin the team.

Played against Welch this last year when he was at Mesabi, he had some success against one of our freshmen tackles using his speed around the edge although that tackle had problems against pretty much everyone, but against our more experienced guys Welch really didn't make an impact and seemed to give up on plays at times, but that could have been because we got out to a lead early and were up on them comfortably the whole game. Overall I think he can be a guy who provides a little depth and may be a spark in certain situations.

  14. That sounds typical of Cardinal...cue Dark Starr singing "Oh Canada" about North Dakota hockey players on FSN...and Jeff Dubay turning red-faced when discussing the Sioux...

The thing was he attacked the guy for no reason, I've played against Tyler in a few different sports and have friends that are pretty close with him and by all accounts he is a very well respected and good guy. I believe he now refs in the NAHL and left Providence to be close to home and could have continued to play college hockey closer to home, but really has a passion for reffing and thats what he wants to do.

  15. What did he say now? The one before the FF was just a joke, but not one that was taken all that well by non-gopher fans. I personally thought it was kind of annoying, but that's just me. Cardinal on the whole is pretty well connected from what I know, but he doesn't have an official capacity with the program.

He tweeted to Tyler Landman, former Providence player from Roseau,MN "Remember when you where a highly thought of recruit and then you flamed out" or something along those lines, because Landman tweeted something about the incident where the Gopher was kicked out last night. A lot of people very unhappy with Cardinal and thinking he is very chilidish.

  16. Don't know if this is the best place for it but is Ryan Cardinal actually associated with the Minnesota hockey program at all? I know I use to listen to him on the PA show sometimes, but probably won't ever again. First the stunt he pulled at the Final 5, now trying to trash former college players on twitter, to me he is a total tool and I have lost any respect I once had for him.

  17. Did anyone else get the impression that Brock Nelson took the regional loss maybe a littler harder than anybody else on the team?? Watching the finale of Through These Doors, it seemed Nelson really took the loss hard, even days later (which is understandable), so I have to wonder if the disappointment and heartache had something to do with his signing.

I wish Nelson all the best and don't blame him for signing, but personally I thought one more year would have pushed him to the level he needs to be at to crack the NHL lineup.

After watching through these doors I definitely got that impression too, but like you said it is very understandable and really I'd be worried if guys didn't take the loss hard and you certainly know the players did, as well as coaches and the fan base too. I really don't think that had a lot to do with him signing early, but I guess it could of. His reaction was probably one of 2 things he may have felt they were so close and that coulda been more of a reason to come back for another shot and I think he probably was leaning towards coming back for another season after that game, but something must have changed. Or the Islanders had wanted him for so long and he already knew he was gonna be signing whenever the season ended so adter that game he knew it was the last time playing with the boys and playing for a school he loved. A lot of people were a little suprised by the signing including me, but I just think Nelson felt like this was the perfect opportunity for him and time to sign.

  18. As you just said a GOOD free agent and Dell is not one of them. If Dell got an NHL affliation it is still questionable but one thing, unless I missed it, no one has said that maybe he is thinking of leaving because of his possible lack of playing time next year and getting out when the getting is good.

Actually I mentioned that in my post too, Dell lost playing time this year compared to last year, and by most accounts he had a worse year this year than the year before. I really think he could be thinking about if he struggles there is gonna be more and probably better competition which could result in him losing playing time. The other thing with Dell is there is no guarantee he would get an offer next year, he is a free agent if for some reason he got injured or had a bad year there is no guarantee. I think Dell will be in the AHL and probably has interest from more than a few teams as there aren't a whole lot of college free agent goalies who are better than him, all in all Dell probably feels like this just might be his best opportunity.

  19. Brad also said he expects to see Knight return. I think if I had to choose one who was gunna leave out of Knight and Dell it would be Dell. I wish he would come back for another year, but can understand why he would take a deal. Dell is a free agent with no gurantee of getting a deal after college, he had a little bit of a down season compared to last year, and there are 2 very good goalies coming in to compete with him and he may have been worried about losing playing time as Dell lost playing time to Eids this year when compared to his 1st year. When Dell does sign I will wish him the best of luck and can see some reasons for leaving and just hope he goes to a system where he can thrive and has a lot of success.

  20. What's especially disappointing for me is I think Nelson could've been a serious contender for the Hobey next year (I don't think he has any run-ins with the law). An extra off-season on UND's weight-training program in UND's world-class facilities could've done wonders for him....

I agree with you he could have been a hobey canidate and you are right he has no run ins with the law, he is a totally classy, respectful, and overall good guy. I agree a off season program at UND would have helped, but I know a lot of guys like to come back and use the facilities in the summer and with his hometown being Warroad I would guess he may still be around this summer.

  21. I think one of the things that we are probably overlooking on Nelson is that he really isn't going to an organization with tons of great prospects. I would guess he immediately becomes the prospect their fans are waiting to come up next. While I thought and wish he would have came back and play another year while putting on some muscle, he may have felt like this is his best shot to get to the NHL the quickest with a fairly weak group of Islander prospects to compete against and not having to compete against a couple more top 5 picks the next couple years.
