I guess UND could just keep using the interlocking ND and continue to be confused with Notre Dame half of the time. And I can't see how they would be a trend setter, how many schools do you actually think going without a nickname would be a good idea? I do agree with you on the UND brand part though but giving the athletic department a nickname will only further that not hinder it. My main point is that until UND moves onto a new nickname, there won't be closure and people will continue to cling onto the Fighting Sioux name. The vast majority need something to focus on, without that they will continue to look to the past.

The athletic department is well aware of the FCOA issues and how they will impact the athletic department despite what you might think or want to claim. I had a conversation months ago with them about it, well before any final details were ironed out at the NCAA level and there is a large issue on how it will be paid for (and this is with all of UND's peer schools, not just UND). This isn't like a scholarship which can be written off as a paper transaction if necessary, this is actual cash that will have to be paid out to student-athletes. I actually agree with gfhockey on not giving it to women's hockey, I don't think they need it as there are very few schools UND will be recruiting against that will offer it and the competitive advantage for spending it on women's hockey isn't there. They still have an advantage over the rest of the schools with facilities and shouldn't need the FCOA to put them over the top with the majority of recruits. I don't think UND will be seeing much of it from their competition in WBB or VB, but NDSU is going to have to offer it in wrestling before they do football and will need to offset it somewhere on the women's side. The ROI on WBB or VB would be more significant if used there. Guessing there have been some pretty interesting discussions as Idalski, Brewster and Pryor are all aware that money will need to be spent on the women's side and all want the money. UND doesn't end up going against a lot of Big Sky teams recruiting-wise in FB or MBB so even if UM or MSU or Weber start to partially offer it, I don't see it impacting UND, at least right away. If at this level (UND and its peers included) could do it that easily, they would in a heartbeat. No one has a clue how its going to be paid for because its an actual cash outlay and is a nightmare for AD's and athletic departments across the nation (outside of the P5 schools of course).

Can you fill me in on the accusations the meeting earlier this week was held illegally? Haven't had the time to look it up, but something about requiring a 24 notice and that wasn't done or something? Do they really have the support from the students and staff the claim? My understanding is that its a lot of grandstanding and starting to look like this one might be getting away from him, but curious if you're hearing similar. I'm by no means suggesting that there aren't issues with UND and tuition (neither of which are exclusive issues to UND), but this seems like it was handled completely the wrong way and has a good chance of blowing up in the student governments face and in the process, bringing completely unnecessary bad press to everyone.

The second part of your statement is dead on from the past Student Body presidents I've known as well. Not sure what the true motive is but seems like the current Student Body president wants to go out guns blazing. Reading the tea leaves, I don't think the support he claims to have is there and he made some pretty bold statements while claiming to have supporting documents. Seems like none of those supporting documents have been released despite comments being made that they would be made available. Interesting considering the matter is being revisited tomorrow. The amount of support from Rob Port and the lengths he has gone to defend the situation and the SB president also throw up a huge red flag to me.

So because you and a handful of casual fans you know don't know the nicknames to some randomly selected colleges UND should decide to not have a nickname? Never mind that it helps differentiate UND when being discussed outside the region, helps increase brand awareness and marketing and will be the only real solution to actually moving on and help put the Fighting Sioux nickname controversy behind them.
-
Didn't say they shouldn't, I agree with that part. I said the decision to give every ticket to them was the interesting part of it.
-
Will be interesting to see how that plays out. UND has offered a portion of single game tickets to the Champions Club members in the past but never the full allotment. Pretty ballsy move. I don't think it's very well thought out to not allow a single ticket for sale to the general public but that's just me.
-
I think the student body president has gotten himself in over his head in this one. Not going to argue that there isn't issues with university administrations in general and UND is no exception but he was looking for a fight to pick and found it. And I'd be careful on putting too much weight on "neutral" opinions from someone who is always looking to take down higher education.
-
Sounds like the student body president needs to start showing up at meetings he's invited to where some of these things have been discussed instead of claiming the administration is trying to hide things. But I guess that isn't as exciting.

As long as the drought doesn't reach 21 years with some down seasons in the middle.
-
No arguments, just threw them in there because they were "ranked" as the top value. And that their average grants/scholarships exceeded their average tuition and I find that amusing..
-
No argument, its a problem across higher ed. Here are the actual numbers used with #1 overall University of Michigan added in for good measure: Avg. Scholarships/Grants: NDSU - $4,754 UND - $4,432 UM - $13,992 Avg. Starting Salary: NDSU - $48,300 UND - $45,700 UM - $54,000 College Tuition: NDSU - $7,353 UND - $7,254 UM - $12,994 Student Living Costs: NDSU - $11,604 UND - $13,800 UM - $12,854 Student Retention Rate: NDSU - 78% UND - 75% UM - 97% Not sure where they got all of their numbers other than the starting salaries, which is collected by voluntary surveys. Actual respondents used to come up with the salary data were 343 for NDSU and 266 for UND with no time frame given. So real scientific and stuff. Also interesting that UM is the best value, probably doesn't hurt that their average scholarships and grants somehow exceed college tuition.
-
I guess giving away that much in tuition waivers and grants really has its advantages.
-
And obviously since no one can actually answer this question, the clear answer to is fire the coach!!
-
Your clueless. Maybe NDSU can finally pay off the locker room renovation that was supposed to be paid for 10 or so years ago?

UND has to continuously allocate resources towards the nickname issue (which a portion of come from the state of ND). The more it comes up, the more resources they have to spend on it. The issue continues to be used against UND in recruiting with the constant threat of them being put back on the sanctions list. It doesn't matter whether its true or not, it is still a negative that other schools are using against UND and will continue to until the whole thing is put to bed. Whoever is behind the campaign is spending both time and money on this. If they really cared about the University of North Dakota (or any other cause for that matter), putting those resources towards that would do a lot more good than fighting a battle that was lost long ago. Even if Spirit Lake and Standing Rock where to finally document their approval and even if the NCAA were to accept it (neither of which I can see happening), it is still time to move on. Tribal politics have proven to be very fluid and all it takes is a new tribal council to come into power on one of the reservations and decide they don't care for the nickname and revoke their approval. UND is then back to square one.

Hak will be extended or fired before he ever coaches into the last year of his contract unless he has personally made it clear that he is done following the season. Defending a poster who has been banned multiple times and who's purpose 99% of the time is to be to derail and train wreck threads is pretty amusing. I don't think he's a moron, I think he just plays one on here.
-
You mean the basketball game that continues to be both the highest priced and attended on NDSU's home schedule?
-
Then why the premium on the game?
-
At this point it is nothing more than a futile effort wasting both time and money, resources that could be much better spent elsewhere. There will always be people who want to continue fighting a lost battle and that is their prerogative but I'd prefer they don't do it at the expense of the University of North Dakota and its athletic department, which is what they are trying to do.
-
An extra million? Your math is a little off. This will likely only affect single game tickets, which last I heard is somewhere around 4,000. Though it would be a cherry on top if the raised their season tickets in 2015 and 2019 and further stuck it to their own fan base, a group who we keep being told by and large don't want the game (though I don't believe it for one second). I'll give you that UND took a lower guarantee than they should have with the stipulation that the net money they receive won't be far off from what they could get elsewhere due to limited travel costs required for the game, meaning FU ended up with the savings. Bubba insisted on the game(s) and he got them. Going to be a good test to see where his defense stacks up and how far the offense has come. Being the third game of the season, most of the small kinks will hopefully be ironed out.
-
First an unscheduled press conference to announce the games and now this: 9/12 - Weber State - $35 / $25 9/19 - North Dakota - $60 / $50 10/10 - Northern Iowa (Homecoming) - $40 / $30 10/17 - South Dakota - $35 / $25 11/7 - Western Illinois - $35 / $25 11/21 - Missouri State - $35 / $25 But remember folks, its no big deal to them, they were just filling an open date. And before the FU mensa club comes by and states they are just looking to gouge UND fans, NDSU is looking at giving Teammakers who don't have season tickets first crack at a good sized portion of single game tickets, it will be their own fans paying the "inflated" price for an unimportant out of conference game.

University of North Dakota Hockey 2015-16 season
jdub27 replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
It makes a lot more sense when looking at it that way. Basically saying his mind will be made up sooner than later and he won't string everyone along until past June 1 to see what other teams might offer him. -

Does it possibly provide a little insight? If he does come back, doesn't Boston lose his rights on June 1 this year? If he did come back would he really only negotiate with Boston after he graduates next year? Seems odd that he would limit himself unless he really feels some loyalty to Boston (which is very possible). -
I believe it was originally only a 30 year lease but everything else is correct (to my knowledge that part hasn't been modified). UND maintains control of the underlying land but the building itself is owned under the non-profit UND Sports Facilities Inc. There's so many misconceptions about the REA they should just put a FAQ up on their website.
