  1. A thought just occurred to me: Could the term "pecking order" just possibly have evolved from a discussion similar to this?
  2. For what it's worth--and perhaps at this late date it isn't even relevant. But I remember the horrific Minnesota Gopher elevens of the 1957-59 era. In 1956, the Gophers lost 7-0 to Iowa, a loss which cost the Gophers a trip to Pasadena. The 1957 started out with a bang but conditions quickly deteriorated as the team lost four of its last five games. The 1958 season was more of the same. In 1959, the Gophes actually finished last in the Big Ten. However, in 1960, the team rebounded, tying Iowa for the Big Ten Conference co-championship and then finishing No. 1 in the nation at a time when the regular season--not the bowl games--determined the national champion. Gopher coach at the time, Murray Warmath, was hounded during the 1959 season. But the team had gone from worst to first. Oh, by the way, Warmath was named national coach of the year in 1960. Perhaps we need a little patience. San Diego State and Portland State were good outings. Let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.
  3. Very well put, homer. I will acknowledge that on-campus classroom participation is perhaps the better way to go if one can afford to do it that way. But this is an ever-changing world and one has to adapt. Fortunately, online education being available can save miles of driving to a campus somewhere in the state (or otherwise). Online education (contrary to numerous Bville posts and the like) is a most acceptable way of completing a higher education. It is not a second-rate education at all. College is what one makes of it. We should all be most grateful to have alternative options. Those who downgrade or demean online education are obviously out of their element.
  4. Yes, I do think there's some excitement back for Sioux football. The outstanding offensive show at San Diego State has gotten the fans inspired again. I do believe the intense heat was really wearing on the defenses of both teams. I think the Sioux defense will show up in future games. In a way it's ironic. In the recent past we have been concerned about our offensive performance. This year it's defense. I think things will straighten out. We'll know more after this weekend.
  5. Many thanks for acknowledging UND's outstanding offensive performance in our game. I'm certain the heat played a role in the wearing down on both teams' defensive performances in the game. Best of luck the rest of the way. Hope SDSU makes it to a top-notch bowl game.
  6. The last I heard Boston College was very much in the ACC.
  7. I think this idea is terrific and has lots of merit, something to seriously consider at any rate.
  8. After SDSU came up with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to grab an 8-6 advantage, UND rallied with a trio of its own in the bottom of the ninth to capture a 9-8 victory in a game played at Kraft Field in Grand Forks, the winning run scoring on a wild pitch.
  9. UND has runners at the corners with two out in bottom of ninth; game tied at 8-8.
  10. Going into the top of the ninth at Kraft Field in Grand Forks it's 6-6 against SDSU.
  11. Years ago UND played some games against Montana State in Billings and some games against Montana at Great Falls if I remember correctly.
  12. Without a doubt I think this is Hakstol's greatest coaching job ever, detractors notwithstanding. He took a club that was treading water in the early going (sweeps at Wisconsin and Minnesota over UND didn't help any, putting us behind the eight-ball in a very large sense) and with a good deal of patience gradually melded the team into championship form, blending the newcomers with the oldtimers. A splendid coaching job under the circumstances. Congratulations, Dave, for a job very well done.
  13. The way I look at it is this, it's always good to be ranked third best in the nation along with the likes of UCLA and Stanford. Somebody somewhere at any rate is thinking we're doing some things right.
  14. It's still 6-6. We're going into extrainnings. Utah Valley recently knocked off #4 Arizona.
  15. In baseball at Utah Valley in bottom of ninth with two out, UND and pre-season Great West Conference favorite Utah Valley are tied at 6-6.
  16. I appreciate your honesty, buckysieve. I believe I've been known myself at times to have "selective perception," so I won't hold it against you.
  17. Should probably correct my post. My paragraph in response to Jim Dahl post beginning in Post #385 should begin with "If I recall correctly" and ends with "Boston College notwithstanding." I must have hit a wrong button since my comments were interspersed with Jim's. Sorry.
  18. Not certain if I heard the game announcers correctly but I believe that prior to this year's 2012 NCAA tourney that UND (of teams playing 15 or more games in the NCAA tournament) had the best winning percentage of any team at .667. I'm certain it's higher than Michigan's or Minnesota's. Both Michigan and Minnesota have more NCAA tourney wins as well as games played than we have, but UND has a better winning percentage. We also have a better NCAA winning percentage than Boston College for those who are interested.
  19. Great post, JF. I couldn't agree more. The last two games are what the rivalry is really all about. I will be pulling for the Gophers against Boston College, you can bet on that. I think this is one of Hakstol's greatest coaching jobs. I've never quite really understood the reasoning behind fans trying to oust either Hak or Lucia. Both have proven to be outstanding coaches through the years. Just because Michigan lost in the first round should Red Berenson be fired? Come on now. It;'s tough to be in charge of a topnotch program such as UND, Minnesota or Michigan with fans expecting a national championship each year. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown, I guess.
  20. Agreed. Would like to keep the nickname. However, believe this controversy is hurting our outstanding world-class university in more ways than one. Don't want it to drag on any longer than necessary. So, we lose the battle. It's better than losing the war.
  21. You're quite right. What was I thinking? Thanks for correcting. I stand corrected. Nevertheless, UND made quite a game of it against traditionally one of the best college baseball teams in the land.
  22. For what it's worth, Mizzou had to rally twice (UND led early 3-0 and then 7-5 after the top half of the seventh inning), the latter time scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh at Taylor Field in Columbia, Missouri, to earn a hard-fought 10-7 triumph over the homestanding Tigers. Another valiant effort by UND against another Big 12 team.
  23. Good luck to the Griz; also good luck to the Jackrabbits; after all, UND men did split with the Jackrabbits this year.
  24. I quite agree. What a fantastic winter season for basketball teams and the hockey teams. Congrats to stellar performances.
