  1. The only possible remedy I can think of at this point is for the women to win the tournament, thereby possibly earning a team photo holding the championship trophy for inclusion in a later possible tournament program.
  2. Not certain; haven't been following it regularly. With the loss, KU is 6-6 on the season, having defeated Middle Tennesse State, Bowling Green, Belmont, Mississippi Valley State (twice) and UND (yesterday) 7-4. Jayhawk losses have been to Mississippi State of the SEC (twice,. 1-0 and 3-1), University of Texas at San Antonio, Louisiana-Lafayette , Gonzaga and today to UND 12-9. I listened to a radio broadcast of the game online over the KU radio network by accessing the KU sports website. No registration was necessary and the audio was free. While I'm certain KU's baseball team isn't the caliber of the Jayhawk men's basketball team, KU is still Big 12, a power conference in most sports.
  3. Trailing 9-8 going into the top of the ninth at Lawrence, Kansas, against the Kansas Jayhawks, UND rallied for four runs to edge the Jayhawks 12-9. UND pounded out 15 hits against Kansas to pick up its first win ever against KU.
  4. Great post...While I'll miss the nickname, the NCAA has virtually all the power. I treasure UND for everything else it provides in addition to athletics--namely a great education, music, drama and everything else associated with a world-class university. Yes, the NCAA has stumbled and bumbled badly. Nevertheless, it's a private club. It makes the rules and can change them and reverse course as it whimsically desires. What is one to do in opposition to something that makes the rules, denies the appeal and then denies a second appeal. It appears the NCAA itself is the "court of last appeals," we know how that is working out.
  5. No doubt about it,jodcon, the NCAA tweaked it as they went along. I believe the NCAA decided to add the stipulation of having tribe approval after Florida State people emphasized the Florida Seminole Nation was behind them, even though Oklahoma Seminole people were against it.
  6. You make a concrete and valid point here. Nevertheless, at this point I wouldn't put it past the NCAA to do anything. Of course the NCAA is arbitrary and capricious, hypocritical at times and all that, perhaps at times not even following their own rules. But.....they have the power.
  7. No history of UND vs. Minnesota, Wisconsin or Iowa in anything other than hockey? C'mon, you've got to be kidding. UND has victories over Minnesota in both men's and women's basketball and have played on the gridiron about 20 times. UND defeated the Wisconsin Badgers the first time the teams played in softball just a short time ago. Sioux have played the Badgers three times in football, all in Madison. UND men's hoops team has played in Iowa City during the Phil Jackson era. A year ago the women's softball team defeated Big Ten Ohio State at a tournament in Iowa. Begging your pardon, but I don't think we're in any position to bargain very hard. I don't see Minnesota, Wisconsin or Iowa changing their position soon, no matter what we may think. We've also competed against Minnesota and Wisconsin in wrestling.
  8. Have to agree Rachel Blount summed up the issue pretty well. The NCAA has shown it's not about to be moved. It's got the muscle and it knows it. I hate to see one of the best nicknames in the world go. However, sadly enough, the issue has the potential to severely damage our institution, academically as well as athletically. The wrangling has gone on long enough. It doesn't make sense to try to make it as a D-1 independent. The option of going NAIA is simply not an option. This is one that Goliath is going to win. I simply don't see a shepherd boy over the horizon on this one. Sorry.
  9. The way the Summit treated us (going after USD to prevent the latter from joining the Big Sky with us) it's very doubtful to me that the Summit would want us.
  10. I don't think it has to be either/or. Why not a combination? A little of each. Those big paydays can really be a big boost for a struggling athletic department at times. On the other hand, mix with games against FBS teams where there's a possibility of victory.
  11. I, for one, appreciate listening to Jack Michaels calling a game, be it football, baseball or whatever. It matters little to me whether or not he is an NDSU grad. Jack is as professional as one gets. Boyd Christenson, a UND grad, called Bison games for an extended period of time. Ed Schultz and Scott Miller have called games for both UND and NDSU. Even though I'm a Sioux fan, I'd rather see NDSU win this game instead of a Southern school (nothing personal against Sam Houston State, you understand). Since people are constantly getting UND and NDSU mixed up, it might well be that NDSU's success will accidentally rub off on UND's athletic programs as well.
  12. We are growing ever so closer....Yes, indeed. We are NORTH DAKOTA!!!!
  13. I agree wholeheartedly with the above comment. I also wish to say thank you to WDAY for its promotion of UND basketball.
  14. Not that I like encourage listening to an opponent's broadcast, but if all else fails, the game is scheduled to be broadcast on the Jackrabbit Network with 570 AM WNAX out of Yankton as the flagship station. WNAX has a powerful signal.
  15. One more addition to the UND-NDSU Confusion. In announcing its 2011-12 women's basketball schedule back in August or so, Missouri announced that North Dakota State--not UND--would be playing in Columbia on December 10th.
  16. I think the Sioux will need to score at least 21 points to win. Let's go for 21-17 UND.
  17. While I agree with the intent and the overall concept, might it not be that we would be subject to some ribbing and probably sniping by our numerous critics out there?
  18. Could we then possibly be known as the Grim Reapers?
  19. Could also go with Drones, but that would have negative connotations as well.
  20. I see a problem with the Teddies. I can just see a headline in the Fargo Forum reading "Bison Pull Down Teddies."
  21. So then, when UND plays USC, the announcer can say at the opening: "Good afternoon, folks, here we are at the Los Angeles Coliseum where the Bare Backs are scheduled to meet the Trojans in what promises to be an oustanding non-conference affair..."
  22. Some truth to this; a word of caution.
  23. Sadly, I have to agree. Considering the fact that the powers that be have managed to leverage their way or the highway, I think it would be pretty much fruitless to pour any more money (like pouring sand down a rathole) into the fight. I'd go with Nokotas for a new nickname as a first choice. Consider this, we could revise the school song to go with lyrics like this: "Fight on true, We're all for you, We're thousands of strong and loyal souls, We know you'll win every game you're in, No matter how distant the goal, And as we go, we'll show each foe, That we're the toughest team between the poles, We're rough and tough it's true, But we're sportsment through and through, We're the Nokotas of North Dakota U." What do you think?
  24. I grew up in a small community in west central Minnesota. For years and years I lived and died with the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team. Putting all my eggs in one basket often wound up with "lost Saturday" feelings some fall afternoons. I was interested in majoring in journalism. UND at the time happened to be the closest school I could attend to major in journalism. When I first arrived on campus in the fall of 1962 I knew I would soon have to make a choice when the Fighting Sioux played the Gophers in hockey. It so happened that was the season (1962-63) the Sioux swept the Gophers all four games in the regular season series and then went on to win it all with a 6-5 victory over nemesis Denver in the NCAA Division I national championship game. From that time hence I knew damn well who to pull for in the Sioux-Gopher rivalry. I have been a dedicated Sioux fan ever since. In the meantime I have learned not to pull all my eggs in one basket. Since friends and relatives have attended numerous colleges and universities around the United States, I have acquired a number of teams to root for. I went to graduate school at the University of Missouri-Columbia, so naturally became a Missouri Tigers fan. But a niece attended graduate school at archrival Nebraska-Lincoln, so have learned to pull for the Huskers on many occasions as well. Having a half-dozen or so schools (or more) to follow on Saturday afternoons usually means any given Saturday usually isn't a total wash.
  25. I wouldn't be surprised if that extended television coverage happens either. Formation of the Big Ten Hockey Conference was clearly out of almost anybody's control. But the Big Ten commissioner clearly wanted it. The way things are shuffling out I do fear there's a good chance that hockey overall will be weakened. I'd hate to see a number of schools drop hockey because of financial infeasibility, but I think there's a good chance it could happen. Initially I was against UND leaving the WCHA, feeling that just because Minny and Wisconsin were leaving that we should too. I have changed my mind. For our own interests we had to pursue other venues. And while the Big Ten Hockey Conference is virtually guaranteed to come out well financially in the television scheme of things, I do fear (as I indicated before) that in the long run it could be disastrous for college hockey overall.
