    One of the big stations in town ran a story on Thursday or Friday night about two women who pulled a gun on a 90 year old lady and robbed her. Their race was not mentioned in the story, despite the fact that still video shots clearly showed two women of color. They were simply described as being in their late 20's/early 30's. Rest assured though, if the suspects were 19 year old white kids wearing denim jackets with a Confederate Naval Jack flag sewn on the left pocket, that detail wouldn't have gone unreported.

    Yep. I know plenty of folks who think "Wild" is an incredibly lame nickname - but the logo helps make up for it.

    Fighting Hawks might not be a great choice, but it's the only one that keeps a tie-in to the former nickname - and that's a plus in my book.

    Our current President made a statement that the number of victims of gun crimes in the US "dwarfs" the number killed by terrorists. Call it a hunch, but I would bet that ISIS killed more than a couple of people yesterday. Hell, they chop off more heads than that on any given day.

    I might suggest that Stanford picking a new tree nickname and logo may have indeed been a big FU to elitist academia nuts and the NCAA...

    Kelley couldn't possibly be asking the NCAA to make such threats against UND in order to force the school to pick a new nickname, could he? Now where have I heard of that tactic being used before...?

    I agree totally - and this is why "Sundogs" has more than a fighting chance at being the new nickname.

    For the record, 82SiouxGuy, I am not in favor of remaining nickname-less. My point is that in the great scheme of things, without a nickname or even with one, UND is still a relatively small-time school in terms of national athletic exposure. That's just the way it is. Was that a UND logo on your sweatshirt that the guy in Boston saw or one with the Sioux logo on it?

    I walked around Yost Ice Arena back in 1998 prior to and during intermission of the Sioux/Wolverine game. Can't tell you how many folks I ran into who were happy to let me know that "Spartans suck" or yell "Go back to East Lansing" to my face. The geometric Sioux head on my green jersey meant squat. People see what they want to see or what they're accustomed to seeing. Hell, I still have to explain to folks in western WI the difference between UND and NDSU. Having a nickname won't change that.

    You know what? I've finally been beaten into total capitulation. I have far bigger things to worry about than the nickname of a school I attended almost 25 years ago.

    Well, it could be worse. I turned on a Tigers game the other day to watch them. Problem is, they're all playing for other teams now!

    In 1991, Wirtz came up with the idea of "Hawkvision," which was a pay-per-view service that broadcast the Blackhawks. Regular season games were not shown at all in Chicago unless you purchased this service. Fans only got to see the Blackhawks on TV if they made the playoffs. Hawkvision was discontinued in 1993, but the exodus of stars from Chicago was just beginning - Tony Amonte, Ed Belfour, Jeremy Roenick, Chris Chelios, etc. Wirtz was a penny-pincher - and THE primary reason the North Dakota "Blackhawk" logo died.

    Tom Clifford shook my hand when I graduated in May of 1992. Kendall Baker gets a bad rap for "dumping" the old Blackhawk-style logo. UND used that logo with permission from the Chicago Blackhawks. Bill Wirtz was a greedy SOB, saw an opportunity to make money, and demanded that UND pay to use the logo. Blackhawks games were all but non-existent on TV and stars were leaving the team in droves. Fans? They had none. Remember, this was when Michael Jordan ruled Chicago. Baker said "no" to paying for permission to use the logo and it was promptly scrubbed away from UND.
