  1. University of Minnesota - Grand Forks North Stars. UMGF North Stars. Kinda catchy.
  2. Whoa whoa whoa...you mean I don't have to wait a day or two to read the scores in the paper? Mind = blown.
  3. I could almost live with the jerseys...but those pants? It looks like Sebastian the Ibis puked up leftover peas and carrots all over them.
  4. Sick, dope, and fire? Those are the hip new buzzwords today?
  5. So you're sayin' you favor gfhockey's "Big C*cks" nickname suggestion?
  6. "There's a lot more Knights gear these days than Redskins apparel at Grand Forks Central." Gee, Tom, ya think? What's it been, only a quarter of a century since the name was changed? Would you be equally surprised to wander around Los Angeles these days and not run into someone wearing an LA Raiders t-shirt?
  7. My point is that "generic" nicknames that you find boring are more than popular in lots of places - even in the SEC.
  8. Interesting comparison, because if Georgia, Mizzou, and LSU all decided tomorrow to get rid of their respective Bulldogs and Tigers nicknames, there would be rioting in the streets of Athens, Columbia, and Baton Rouge.
  9. So now it's mandatory that the flagship university in each state must use the official state nickname as its school nickname?
  10. #just_don't_get_the_appeal
  11. If I throw a rock across the St Croix River, it'll land in Minnesota. OK, not quite THAT close, but 15 minutes from Stillwater.
  12. Nothing, but how many more folks would yell "SIOUX" over the football, basketball, or hockey announcer when he/she says the word "Fighting"?
  13. Hmnnn...you had me hooked for a minute and then all of a sudden, you lost me. Just kidding, absolutely GREAT post, including the part I cut out. I'll offer up another tyoe of fan, though: one who spent 22 years as a born-and-raised native North Dakotan who just recently hit the tipping point of having now spent the majority of his life as a resident of somewhere else. To this day, when people ask me where I'm from, the answer is still "North Dakota...but I live in Wisconsin now."
  14. 1912: Of course it's true, I read it in the paper! 1944: Of course it's true, I heard it on the radio! 1980: Of course it's true, I saw it on TV! 2015: Of course it's true, I read it on Twitter!
  15. 90% of my posts are in the hockey forum...and I've disliked the idea of being just "North Dakota" from the start. And I'm not on Twitter.
  16. BREAKING NEWS: The University of North Dakota has announced its name change. From now on, the school will be known as the... ...University of North Dakota, Berkeley.
  17. ...and here we go again...blame the hockey fans.
  18. And rest assured, some folks on the committee can probably hear this now, too, which is why Sundogs will keep gaining momentum over the "erase the past" crowd.
  19. Now that this has been decided, can the "get over it, we're changing nicknames and logos" crowd and the "Fighting Sioux forever" bunch unite to defeat an enemy-in-common? That enemy's name is Sundogs.
  20. What nickname do you think is the final choice?
  21. Roughriders - issues with local high school and potential alienation of local GFC alumni and fans. North Stars - obvious reference to former NHL team and using the nickname of a border state is a bad move. Nodaks - Nodiks, Nodix, or Nodicks signs and jeers by opposing fans. Obvious no. Fighting Hawks - potential of fans still saying Fighting Sioux - an unwanted link to the past. Sundogs - Urban Dictionary be damned, that's just close-minded and bigoted thinking. We'll be a shining rainbow for all to see, the perfect abstract vision for fans.
  22. Couldn't be any worse than Phoenix in 1995 or Brooklyn next season, could it?
  23. Sickening to watch, but not surprising to me in the least.
  24. MafiaBoy used my login instead of his to vote for Fighting Hawks in the last poll (7 choices). I asked why that was his choice and he said that the word "Fighting" in the new nickname would at least keep half of the tradition of "Fighting Sioux" alive. I must say, I'm coming around on the idea...I voted for Fighting Hawks myself in this one.
  25. Yes to your question. First, the redundancy of NORTH Dakota NORTH STARS, then the fact that it's Minnesota's nickname. UGH! 2/5 of the choices are embarrassing: North Stars and Sun Dogs/Sundogs are absurd. While the "move on" crowd keeps bitching at the "Sioux forever" crowd, Sun Dogs/Sundogs just keeps plugging along like the tortoise, headed to the finish line.
