2003: number of times UND's nickname was talked about...zero 2015: number of times UND's nickname will be talked about....many. 2019: number of times UND's nickname will be talked about if we have no nickname....many. Should be an interesting UND-NDSU game these next 2 games.

The "they" I refer to is the SR Tribal council. The people voted them in but wasn't heard because of the selected council.

Every year UND has no nickname it will be brought up because everyone else has a nickname.

How is it derogatory when people use it to abbreviate our state and there are businesses with that name, Nodak Rural Electric? Call them up and tell them their name is derogatory, after they laugh at you and hang up report back to us on your findings.

And once that new nickname sets in they won't talk about it. How many times does Redskins get brought up at state tournaments? How many times does the Bullets name get brought up in NBA games, answer none, because the change happened a while ago it's now sunk in so would've the new nickname if they would have picked one 3 years ago.

ESPN and I think FSN during the UND-Minnesota basketball game. It's usually the channels not local like MidcoSN.

Yep and marketing has sucked, and the name debate has been ongoing from the net to the paper to games. Can we have a game on ESPN or FSN where your non-nickname is not brought up. By just being North Dakota this nickname debate will never end!!

I recall Doug Woog using it often during Gopher-UND games.

They are far from innocent in this whole thing. If they would have told the NCAA about the 1969 pipe ceremony and backed it up with support, UND wouldn't have needed any tribal votes, but a man named Ron His Horse Is Thunder wanted nothing to do with that or UND's nickname.

Because University of North Dakota North Dakota sounds better.

The SR knew what the outlook would be because of what happened with the Spirit Lake vote, therefore prevented a tribal wide vote, and killing the UND name (not to mention not backing up the 1969 piece pipe ceremony granting permission for use of the name). Yep those poor scapegoats.

Why not choose Nodaks instead of choosing no nickname at all. Everyone will still call us Nodaks if we have no name, along with the no-namers, the Green and White, only a select few will say Fighting Sioux. So why not have Nodaks as the name. With Nodaks, we have a nickname, can keep the same boring UND logo that you can't merchandise much on and life goes on. Then you still have the 5 names for people to vote on.

Every school has a guy or gal who does things in his/her personal life that people don't agree with, you cannot say NDSU didn't have people like that.

Yes UND fans have passion for the Sioux name and logo, that is good. The NCAA has a rule that everyone must follow or pay the consequences so sometimes you just have to let go and move on. The name has been retired because the tribal council on the Standing Rock didn't give approval (not Kelley, but the Standing Rock) so I suggest all those who do not want a new name drive down to the Standing Rock and bring it up to them face to face and not behind a keyboard. Let me know how that goes.

And if UND wins we will hear every excuse under the sun why the Bison lost from the refs and dirty play to not enough beer in the dome.

So UND is playing NDSU in FOOTBALL this September, anyway to steer this into football talk since it is in a football thread.

Having the same nickname for more than one school wasn't uncommon in Grand Forks remember when there was 3 schools with the nickname Warriors ( West, Wilder and Valley) was there outcry...nope. So having UND and RR be Roughriders wouldn't be that big of a deal.

And in other NCAA hockey it's the Mavericks of UNO vs the Mavericks of Minnesota St-Mankato and the Huskies of Michigan Tech take on the Huskies of St. Cloud State.

They should eliminate North Stars.
