It will take some time to heal and accept this, Stay classy, Sioux Forever.

And of course it's because the North Dakota Legislature has lots of UND graduates which in turn means it is anti-NDSU, just like all the ND media.

I think it's time we turned the tables on the nickname opponents and started asking them the tough questions. Questions like: What are you doing to address the real documented issues facing Native Americans such as unemployment, substance abuse, suicide and domestic violence? Where would you rank the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname in importance to the issues of unemployement, substance abuse, suicide and domestic violence? How would retiring the Fighting Sioux nickname help Native Americans with the issues of unemployment, substance abuse, suicide and domestic violence? What is the UNDIA and other organizations on and off campus doing to address these issues? What time and resources are the other organizations that are so vocally against the nickname putting toward these issues? How does it compare with the time and resources they are putting toward retiring the nickname? I would love to see Chuch Haga from the Grand Forks Herald get a round table discussion going on this issue and ask these questions of those organizations and individuals who are claiming the nickname is holding back Native Americans. With all the negative stereotypes of native americans that exist and all the social problems they face it's hard to believe that removing any association with an institution of higher education or eliminating one of the only positive images in the public's eye would help overcome these problems. Let's start asking them these questions.
-
Wow - what an incredibly bias story from the Grand Forks Herald. You can bet these students were hand picked because of their opinons. Not one voice on the other side - as if there is 100 percent agreement from Native Americans, which we know there isn't. Of course they are going to say the Spirit Lake supporters are uninformed, that's because the vote didn't go their way. You always question the results when something does not support your opinion. My parents raised me to understand that "No one can make you feel a certain way, you are in control of your emotions and thoughts" I was at the Pow Wow in Grand Forks and saw several other non-native americans there. It was a beautiful spring day I bet there were many events within the city that had light attendance but I don't think they are blaming it on prejudice. I could also say "I did not feel welcome there", "People were looking at me funny and talking about me" or "I did not feel safe" But I won't. I was stopped at the door to the event rather disrespectfully by door monitors who obviously were assuming that I did not have a ticket or did not belong there. They asked me for my ticket but they did not ask the people in front of me - must of been because of my color. It made me feel unwelcome, it made me feel uncomfortable - guess I should have called the newspaper or filed a discrmination complaint. Of all the negative stereotypes of Native Americans that exist and will continue to exist we are about to eliminate one of the few postive symbols. It's sad but I don't think getting rid of the Fighting Sioux logo is going to stop idiots who are prejudice from shouting stupid comments out of truck windows.

Here's something of interest from ESPN The Magazine this week. William & Mary chooses griffin as their new mascot, teams will still be known as The Tribe. How is calling yourself the Tribe not hostile and abusive?
-
I got there for the last 10 minutes and was introduced to Mr. Murray as he chatted with others on the sidelines. He assured me he would be on the field next fall and ready to go. At the very least it shows desire and intent to get things in order.

Okay as the cliche goes, This isn't the end it is the beginning. Many of us will go through a greiving process which includes denial, resentment, anger and eventually acceptance. We need to keep our integrity and stay proud. It won't help UND's image if there is negativity towards native americans. The Fighting Sioux legacy is a big part of North Dakota history so perhaps there needs to be Fighting Sioux Historical Preservation Society started. Perhaps The Ralph could set aside some space where alumni could donate memorabilia. It could become a state historical site. The Fighting Sioux Historical Preservation Society could also hold events on campus in conjunction with sporting events and homecoming. What are your thoughts?

You can't copyright the name North Dakota. Therefore a new nickname will be in the works but probably not until after a year of healing.

If the nickname goes away we all join the Fighting Sioux Historical Preservation Society. There will be no shortage of Sioux merchandise available no matter what happens - trust me.

The St. Cloud State Husky Center Ice Club will be having their regular pre-game social at the Holiday Inn in St. Cloud. They haven't posted whether it's Friday/Saturday or both or the time but if you want to check out their website it's http://www.center-ice-club.org/ If I hear for sure about day/times I will repost. In the past it's been a cash bar and free snacks, of course also time to meet other hockey fans and discuss the game/season.
-
I just talked with someone connected with the SCSU Booster Club and they are checking for me on where the Husky Boosters will be meeting prior to the games. Usually visiting team fans are invited so I will post what I learn here as far a times and locations. It's usually free food and a nice social atmosphere. They should be in a good mood as they are having a good season.
-
Is there going to be a fan bus to the St. Cloud game? Are the Sioux fans still invited to the Husky booster club pre-game social? I'd love to meet up with the visiting Sioux fans and hand out some Siouxpride bumper stickers.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this a very young Sioux Team with lots of freshman and sophomores? Also what impact do you think losing Genoway has had on the team? By the way any discussion on "payback" at the St. Cloud series?

I chalk it up to a transition year. I would never say I am embarassed by a UND team unless it is clear the players have given up on themselves, which I doubt is happening. The move to Division I means perpetual mediocrity for sports such as basketball. Look at the 64 teams that make the tournement those with seeds lower than 12 are almost always bounced in the first round and lower level conferences never get seeds higher than 12. Yes there are exceptions but not very often. We need to enjoy and support the basketball season and team no matter what their record. I would say if next year we are still losing every game by double digits - it would be time for a coaching change.
-
I don't like it when fans of other teams use the injury excuse so I won't either, but it became obvious to me that the slump in the middle of the season was due to injuries to key players. You have to love that for the past two years despite losing our top returning running back, every year a new stud shows up to take the hand off. That does say something for good recruiting at the skill positions. This year's defense was disappointing at times when it came to the fundamentals such as tackling. For a transition team I'm happy about the outcome and send kudos to the team and coaching staff. Thanks to the current Sioux players for choosing UND when they knew there was little to play for other than pride (and a conference title of course). In the end it is just a game, and important for UND to maintain it's standards, pride and tradition as well as for the fans to maintain ours.

We'd love feedback on the website, the product line and our message/mission.

They are all men's and women's sizes. Some shirts are specifically women's cuts and are indicated as such.

Glad you asked. First off as I mentioned I am a UND Alumnus and I bleed Sioux Green and Pink. We got this idea because we felt there needed to a way for people to show their pride in the Sioux name no matter what their affliation with the name, (and it's not just UND), there are people all over the country that are interested in the name or they just like unique clothing. The name "Sioux" is not trademarkable in the same manner that the name "German" or "Norwegian" is not trademarkable. Thus if you research online there are dozen of companies selling "Sioux" clothing and memorabilia. Althought not associate with UND, prior to launching our site we were in touch with UND, more as a courtesy, since we are a small company among dozens and they have much larger issues to deal with. We contacted them just so they would know about us if anyone asked them, so they could be informed. As I mentioned Siouxpride.com is not associated with UND or the Fighting Sioux, in fact we have had contacts from people who have no connection with UND, they just like our design or they are into native american culture. Our website is also positioned to welcome all who take pride in the Sioux name. If/When Siouxpride becomes profitable it is our mission to be a philanthrophic company that supports numerous non-profit organizations, UND being one of them. Those who have started their own business know that reaching that level of profitability can take awhile, but we feel our mission of helping people celebrate their pride in the Sioux name is one that has merit and that will interest people. If the Sioux nickname at UND goes away then there will still be a need to preserve the history of the Sioux name, it's an important part of the culture and history of the midwest. Thanks for asking.

You met my partner, he's a crazy hockey fan! Thanks for helping get the word out about siouxpride.com, we have some nice Sioux Forever designs too, one is classy the other two a little more edgy, all three send the message that the Fighting Sioux will live forever. We are hoping for a big rush for Christmas. Check us out at www.siouxpride.com P.S. I am a UND Alumnus. God bless the Fighting Sioux!

Everything I've seen says 4:00 just like next week, I doubt they would have one game at 3:00 and the rest at 4:00.

I will be at the St. Cloud game this afternoon with my two teen daughters, our first every women's hockey game so not sure what to expect. I did tell them it won't quite be like a men's game for atmosphere. Go Sioux!
