http://www.startribune.com/nation/133824983.html Property values and rents will keep increasing forever and ever, right?

While the NC$$ appears to be sitting in the bleachers for this mess, the B10 has fired its own round. http://www.startribune.com/sports/133814738.html

I'm not blasting at Penn State because something like that could never happen at UND, I'm taking shots at the premise that athletic departments should be be treated with more deference than the rest of the university. If Paterno and McQueary had done the "right thing", instead of just following the black letter of their rules, Sandusky would probably be getting his in arrears long ago. When the athletic departments effectively run their university, regardless of how much money they pull in, you have a much larger issue than a cover-up.

Precisely. As Prohibition adequately demonstrated, the only people who benefit from "wars" on various subtances, for religious, moral or whatever reasons are criminals who deal the stuff, governmental agencies who enforce the "law" and the "do gooders" who push their respective agendas. I'm surprised the GF "Drug Task Force" hasn't tried to seize the Phi Delt house and sell it at auction ... yet.

Einstein once noted that the capacity for stupidity is infinite, so I presume Lakes is proving that theory correct.

Paterno is lawyering up...

If I were Penn State, I'd be more worried about the feds taking a good look at them from a criminal perspective. IIRC exploitation and trafficking of minors is a federal offense, and if the rumors of some prostitution activity are plausible and you have used means of interstate commerce such as phone calls, emails, etc., then you have a predicate for RICO charges. Whatever immunity Penn State and certain officials may enjoy under state law may not mean squat to the US Attorney General if he/she really gets going. The fact the Dept of Education is already investigating probably means that "the camel's nose is under the tent".

Wow. Just wow ...

And the "Occupy-Whatever" types wonder why their degrees in Sociology and Feminist Poetry don't land them a job that will pay their six figure student loans, buy them a new car and pay the rent on a trendy studio apartment, while still having enough left over for citrus infused braised scallops and a nice Pinot Gris.

I know a number of Penn State alums, and they are mortified that Paterno effectively turned a blind eye to the situation. I had a great deal of respect for Paterno, and the way he ran his program, but sometimes just doing the bare, legal minimum just doesn't cut it.

Right now, I feel pretty damn sad about the whole affair ...

And our beloved alma mater is a card carrying member of said monopoly. That said, the more I read about these anti-trust suits going on against the NC$$, the more I like them. I hope the attorneys representing SL find a very good anti-trust attorney to prosecute that claim.

If by "evil genius", you really mean "self-righteous, politically motivated egomaniac", I'd say that's about right.

I'm sure the follow-up story will predict seven years of flood, famine, locusts and daily Justin Bieber concerts when the Sioux name is retired.

I wonder how many of the idiots posting in the referenced thread also post here ...

I trust them to have UND's best interests at heart, as opposed to Al Carlson ... and a few others on this board.
-
Given some of the other press accounts about Laffen's bill and some amendments, I'd like to think Clueless Al would leave this issue alone. He's done enough damage, and I hope his fellow legislators let him know it.

While JoPa may have done only "what the law requires", others are taking the hits. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-11-08/penn-state-officials-taking-fall-for-paterno-donor-katz-says.html

You're not supposed to "hate" Tech, you're supposed to feel sorry for them, Part of the WCHA tradition.

The hypocrisy in your posts is often amazing. I'd put you on "Ignore", but I really appreciate the laughs. Keep up the good work, Super Dave.

Unlike some people, I have deeper ties to UND than just the Sioux name. I have two degrees from the school and donate money regularly, What do you have besides a sweat stained jersey or two and a poor grasp of reality? I'll cheer for UND, regardless of the teams' name, and when the name goes away, you can slither away and cheer for 'su or Minnesota, and dwell on the past.

The "free speech" angle is academic, to put it mildly. Moreover, if UND wanted to assert its "free speech" rights it should have done so when it originally sued the NC$$. (See, generally, estoppel and laches) It's a nice concept, but it won't pay the bills or get UND out from under the NC$$ thumb.
