Don't be talking down to Dave like that. He's our self-proclaimed "expert" on copyright law, constitutional law, anti-trust law, civil actions, self-defense and no-contact whatsoever hockey.

I've seen you attempt "engage in a war of words" and I've found it amusing. You may want to take up Kenpo instead, and give yourself a better chance of winning something. Or just stick to knitting.
-
You would be the type to try to press charges for something you brought on yourself. You probably got your ass repeatedly kicked throughout your school years too.
-
Apparently, you've never been a fan of the university though.
-
I wouldn't go that far. Maybe Faison et al. need to get on the phone to their counterparts at Minnesota. I doubt Minnesota would pass up the chance to fill up Mariucci playing the Sioux,at least one series a season.

I wonder how often "Freedom of Speech" has gotten some loudmouth decked in a bar?

If you've watched the HBO series 24/7 where they follow teams playing in the Winter Classic you gain a lot of insight into how the refs think. They yap with the players, talk candidly about calls and non-calls, and in some cases set a stage for a scuffle. You also hear players talking about fighting, and who's going after who on the next shift. I think fighting can have a place in a game where stars can be worth millions to a team and some fourth liner is trying to make a name for himself. But then I read about the various head injuries and their latent manifestations in former players, and it gives me pause.

Sure it is. SL needs to establish a right, such as a property right, that is in danger in order attain standing under Lujan. The petitions, if they were fully enacted as law would effectively strip that right, if it exists now or in the future from SL and give it to the state. If the stars fully aligned, and by some miracle SL actually won its case or got the NC$$ to back off its H&A nonsense, they would then have to fight the state to fully own it. And let's not engage in the level of hypocrisy of the NC$$, nobody really gives damn about "respect" for NAs in this fight. This so-called "respect" is effectively making NAs pawns, again, to powers they cannot control. Many of those who trot out "respect" and "rights" for NAs are probably the same people who refer to them as "prairie niggers" or "wagon burners" in private conversations and jokes with their drinking buddies.

Where was Ron a few years ago when it actually mattered?
-
Um, yeah. UND did fight in 2007 and eventually agreed to the settlement surrender agreement. And it fought probably more aggressively than most schools would have. Where was Spirit Lake, and Clueless Al and Reed Soderstrom then? When the fight was most important all of these newfound fans of the Sioux name were nowhere to be found. Their self-indulgent opportunism does nothing for the school, as oppposed to their own bloated egos. F**k them. Your continual histrionics about the isolationism, the Vichy French and selected media stories are better suited to Say Anything than any reasonable legal argument. Neither the Board nor UND will never make any additional arguments to keep the Sioux moniker. Soderstrom is playing both sides of the fence with his litigation on behalf of SL and his position behind the petitions since those "rights" to the Sioux moniker are in opposition to each other. Hopefully, the NC$$'s lawyers use that "conflict" in their defense, as if they really need any more ammunition.

FTFY. Actually, it does raise the specter of how can UND assert trademark rights over a moniker it has officially discarded? In order to assert one's rights to a mark, you have to use it in commerce. If UND won't or can't use it, or doesn't assign it to say ... SL, they risk losing any control over it. As for private businesses and individuals, plaster that moniker wherever you can ...

But it's the internet, man! It has to be true!!!

The home of Miami University has developed one of the more potent hockey cultures in college hockey. Are they high? They put Oxford ahead of Duluth and Orono. I'm surprised they didn't throw South Bend into the mix, and help NBC suck up to the Golden Domers.

Let's just use a random name generator. It's bound to produce a better result than some santized, generic non-offensive name from the various "stakeholders", whomever they may be. "Here come your University of North Dakota Flying Mules!!!!"

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-01-25/north-dakota-oil-boom-brings-blight-with-growth-as-costs-soar.html “It’s absolutely destroying our infrastructure,” said Hynek, a Mountrail County commissioner, as he sat in a pickup truck on the 1,400-acre farm where his family has grown wheat, flax and sunflowers for four generations. “There were three rapes here last summer -- that’s in a town with one assault in its history,” said Cory Rice, who bought the restaurant from his grandparents. “It used to be a quiet community. Now it’s dangerous.” State housing officials say escalating rents are forcing longtime residents to leave. They can’t find developers interested in building new affordable housing, they add. LaFontaine, the Williston schools superintendent, said she needs about $87 million to build two elementary schools and one intermediate school and to hire new teachers. State lawmakers voted down a bill last year that would have provided some funding.

Of course not. With no real accountability at any level, tyrants beget tyrants.
-
NoDak's congressional delegation had the perfect opportunity a few years ago, and even this summer. And nothing came of it. As much as I hack on Cluess Al for any number of reasons, I think if just one of the Three Stooges in DC had politicized the same issue and raised their voice against the NC$$ over the past few years UND may have been treated with the same deference as FSU, Utah, CMU, etc. And since the only thing the NC$$ really fears is the power of the federal government, including the federal courts, I wish SL the best on their case, and think anybody considering signing those petitions should also not vote for any of the incumbents. If certain parties want to turn this issue into a "political crusade", November 2012 is right around the corner.
-
Say what you may about the NY Times, but this op-ed does a nice of job of showing why the NC$$ doesn't want anybody looking into its business practices ... People associated with Connecticut basketball, including Calhoun, are said to be furious at the N.C.A.A.’s treatment of Ryan Boatright. But the university is as fearful of the N.C.A.A. as Tanesha. It has yet to say a single word publicly on his behalf. Most astonishing, an N.C.A.A. spokeswoman told me that the organization does not have the legal authority to compel cooperation from parents. Again, technically true: Its real weapon — the threat of destroying their sons’ careers — is far more potent than any mere subpoena. “The N.C.A.A. is like the Gestapo,” wrote one parent in an e-mail. “It’s out there, we all fear it, and it is all-powerful and follows its own rules and makes them up as they go along. Who are they protecting? The same thing the Gestapo protected: themselves.” http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/24/opinion/nocera-living-in-fear-of-the-ncaa.html?ref=sports

Oh yeah, they were really touting the fact that these "two Catholic schools" play D1 hockey. Guess they forgot about Sacred Heart, Providence, etc. On the flip-side, ND's new barn looks really sharp.
