I'm actually not totally against the name change..
ScottM replied to ESPNInsider's topic in UND Nickname
As has been noted, the name connects the school to the tribes, and to the litany of programs, including the Indian-specific affirmative action programs for the idiots coming on board. Your argument that the school should be more accommodating and "build relationships" reminds me of those who advocated "negotiating" with Bin Laden after 9/11. As I noted before, I would rather UND drop the name entirely rather than bending over any further for certain groups of people who would not be happy, regardless of how much they squeezed the school. -

I do not agree with the premise of effectively bribing a group of people to use the name, especially when the name itself is so widely used in other contexts it probably doesn't "belong" to them anyway. Moreover, I would rather scrap the name and the Indian-specific programs on campus than kow-tow to narrow special interests who seek to extort money or conduct from people/institutions in order to further their own interests. If the NC$$ and certain whiny bedwetters (Indian and non) do not think UND does enough to support American Indians compared to other schools, I see to no reason to attempt to appease them any longer. I would rather UND go "nameless" than be turned into a proverbial ATM for a bunch of unhappy f88ks. -
More than likely, the poser is just happy that mommy will let him play on the 'puter once in awhile. What are the odds the newest dumbass gets suspended or banned within a week? 5-2?

The "Gold" ... I don't think Marquette is using it anymore. Fightin' Whities ... I would not be offended, and "Everything's goin' to be all white". Flatlanders ... go with the obvious. Warriors ... use a Northern European male ... maybe an Amazon female for the XX set. Purse swinging Nancys ... goes with the official colors of green and pink, and creates a bond with the NC$$. Then again, some marketing tool would probably come up with "The Frost", "The Tundra", "The Windchill", "The Flash" "Flyers" "Rockets" ... or something equally stupid.

Nah. They're obviously ill-equipped to form their own opinions, or otherwise follow the "orthodoxy" espoused by their "leaders" of so-called sovereign nations who cannot, or will not, focus their energies on more mundane concerns like crime, unemployment, alcohol abuse, etc.

Now, now. There's no need to point the inherent hypocrisy of the "remedies" suggested by the NC$$. On the other hand, since the NC$$ can only "ask" schools to cover the names/logos of their buildings, what if they don't and there's no such requirement in the contract? Especially privately-owned or non-school controlled facilities? Moreover, what if the schools are contractually obligated to display the name/logos that might be owned by a non-profit group? FWIW: It does not appear that Illinois is even going to consider dropping its name.

The NC$$ is using race-based criteria to sanction certain members, as well as using unstated criteria in "abusive" or "hostile" to make its determinations. That is illegal, especially since the NC$$ is not a "state actor", e.g., governmental agency affecting a race-based preference program. If the NC$$'s policy is to stand muster, it must hold the same criteria for all schools, and I do not believe Notre Dame or Penn were required to submit those self-reports. The NC$$ has decided to selectively enforce new rules on existing members, while effectively "hiding the ball" from members selected for sanctions to create a race-based double standard. Affected schools should be able to easily argue that the new rules are arbitrary and capricious, and based on race. If the Notre Dame is allowed to maintain its "Fighting Irish" name and logo, UND, FSU, Illinois, etc. should be able to maintain their names/logos throughout the entire season, post-season, etc.

I'm not sure where the Stream Yellow faithful are getting their "facts", but most of the same issues have been discussed ad nauseum on this forum, complete with sources for the 2-3 literate ones in the bunch, including who gave permission to use the Name, including since the 1930s, who opposes the Name, etc. Maybe the Stream Yellow crowd think licking Brand's shoes will somehow force the BSC to suddenly open its rolls again. That said, I really doubt this will force UND, FSU, Utah, etc. to change their names, so much as their uniforms which should generate more money for their schools for "post-season thirds". Meanwhile, 'SU can plan its next conference-less, pseudo-D1 game in Twisted Twig, Texas and Bendover, Arkansas. Moreover, I would expect the NC$$ to grant a few more "exceptions" to their list, as they calculate the odds of winning/losing a lawsuit premised on race-based exclusions and whatever the hell "abusive" and "hostile" mean in the context of these restrictions.

Well, this helps take some sting out of the NC$$'s meddling in the nickname issue, which I'm still trying to digest and doesn't look too insurmountable if handled correctly. Anyway, I believe UND has had a number of hockey players who returned after their pro careers ended, or who still took classes during their careers. I think this will probably benefit the programs who recruit top-draft choices who are only around for 1-2 seasons.

Hello, Litigation. I would suspect that the names/ logos deemed "hostile or abusive" will probably depend on how much each school kissed the NC$$'s ass in their "self reports". Morons.

Exactly. Until he wins a Cup, or at least makes a run at one or two, wearing a suit, Gretzky remains a great player only. The ranks of pro sports, and college too, are littered with fomerly great players who were mediocre as coaches, managers, etc. That said, I think Wheeler is still a very talented player, and he will probably do well in college, and maybe the pros too.
-
Somehow, I just can't imagine Cary Eades hanging around a maternity ward in Alberta or Minnesota looking to sign "the next Gretzky".
-
Here's a pic. Hopefully Brian stays around for a couple of seasons.
-
Overall, a very good draft day for UND, and the WCHA. The next couple of seasons should be fun.
-
Hakstol should be fired.

This type of speculation is a spectacular spectator sport.

I like to think that the "powers that be" at UND are not as myopic, or drunk, as their cousins to the south.

According to different media accounts I've read the past few days, New York Times, Washington Post etc., the BRAC people may not necessarily follow the recommendations from the Pentagon. At the very least, they continue to question some of its findings, namely reducing missions rather than closing completely some of the affected bases.
-
Or even Central Michigan for that matter. Can you say "conference"? Good, I knew you could.

Same goes for a number of the newer "hybrid" vehicles coming out. You get a nice tax credit if you buy one, even though the hybrid Accord gets only about 2 more mpg than their standard V-6. Power vs. conservation. As I recall, there have been a number of earlier studies that questioned the actual benefits of ethanol, but they were also derided by ag-interest groups.

Agreed. With the addition of Toews, Duncan, etc., the offense will have to really compensate for a younger, thinner D. Chorney, Lee, etc. will definitely need to step up early, and often.

Great! It was your turn to watch him. You're fired!
