    USHL Draft

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Lancers relocate if the AHL club makes a big splash, and starts taking their markets. UNO would probably see a dip too, except when they host Michigan or perhaps Dame. Isn't the AHL putting a club into Des Moines? I vaguely recall that "rumor".
  2. Considering what we've got coming in on D, e.g., Lee, Chorney, etc., not exactly stellar numbers, but maybe he's a "defensive defenseman". Anyway, welcome aboard, Todd.
  3. It looks like price tag for "savings" has been set, but fewer installations may be on the block. $48.8B There are/were also some interesting links to other articles on the issue, especially by the Christian Science Monitor
  4. Not necessarily. If the USHL is like the WHL, you are not obligated to play in the league when drafted, otherwise Toews would be at Tri-Cities. If he goes to the USHL, he'll go because Lucia thinks it would be best for his entry onto Minnesota's team. Overall, I think Lucia likes the quality of SSM players he's had, and would probably not have a problem with him finishing his time there.
  5. It's that kind of myopic thinking which seems to pervade the local/regional leadership, and nothing has changed since I left campus 10 years ago. The economic loss would be acute, especially initially, especially as most businesses and people would hold onto their wallets as a reaction. Even if the business owner you spoke to never had a customer from GFAFB, the odds are very good his other customers are at least indirectly impacted by the base, and they may be forced to cut back/shut down in the future if other alternatives are not present.
  6. Good Lord, John. Get a grip, go to one of your BK stores and have a Whopper and fries. Hysteria and crying will not save the base. However, to minimize the impact the so-called leaders will need to develop realistic contingency plans to fully utilize the assets left behind. In the stories referenced in earlier posts, the communities that survived, and thrived, after a base closing seem to have made a concerted effort to make the best of a bad situation. I think the local and state leaders are remiss in their duties if they have not seriously considered what they would do with the base after it closed. Closing the base would have some serious negative impacts, but how long they last is dependent on those who in positions of leadership and power. Frankly, I don't think Marshall and certain others are fit to fill those roles.

So, you must be fat old guy in the Salvation Army cardigan.

Okay I realize you're slow, but do try to keep up. McFool said I said Kupchella said The outline for the UND Strategic Plan from his office says For Chaps' lapdog to write that crap goes against what was quoted here, and elsewhere. Kupchella may not have drunk the "D1 Kool-Aid" yet, but it's disengenuous to presume he has no interest in the move. Then again, considering the source, I can't say I'm surprised. Moreover, with regard to the "deep end" comment, it is readily apparent that 'SU disregarded the Carr Report it commissioned, as it flounders for conference affiliations, scheduling, etc. but I'm sure the UND Admins appreciate the free roadmap. BTW: Nothing like some dumb comments from the Stream Yellow crowd to stop Sioux fans' infighting.

    Buning is new AD

Considering McFool hosts a "golf show", I can't help but read his screeds with a healthy dose of nausea. He must think Buning is a fool if he hasn't done his DD on UND, and its attendant issues, problems, etc. As well, Kupchella seems to paying attention to the D1 issue, more than Chaps ever did before he dove into the deep end. However, my favorite is this: Sure Gene. Poor ol' 'SU got its little feelings hurt by big, bad UND, again. And the home gates must have been spectacular for 2004-05, and I'm sure those travel expenses to the middle of nowhere came in well below budget, even in the face of rising fuel prices. Go back to the Turf and try another Power Hour.

Frankly, I don't see this as a "slap" or anything else. The fact that Harmeson left the door open either shows this was an indicator they weren't really thrilled with the Final Three, or they were more intent on getting the best possible person into the slot. Moreover, I don't see anybody here criticizing Buning's credentials, so much as whining about hurt feelings. I think he'll do a fine job, and making Lieutenant Colonel in the Army is no easy feat. Then again, he'll probably demand results and accountability, which will probably suck for the deadwood types, as well as the whining, bed wetters in Twamley and Merrifield.
  11. When I was growing up in Fargo, and 'SU still had a club team, hockey was really never a big sport. Occasionally, one of the local high schools might make a run, only to lose to Central or RR, but that was about it. UND hockey usually got a good run of local media coverage, but you never really heard much else about the sport. Frankly, I think the reason 'SU will never have a viable hockey program is that too many of their fans would ride their livestock into "the barn" thinking it's some 4-H function or a county fair. All of that manure would make the ice next to impossible to use. As well, hockey requires an attention span that doesn't end with "Hey ma! Can I borrow some of your chaw?"
  12. I agree that losing the base would have a profound impact on the community and state on a number of levels, not including the economic. I think if GFAFB closes, the leadership in the state/community is going to have really push themselves to utilize the potential of the site. However, I don't have a great deal of confidence in their abilities to come up with a viable solution. These guys lost Cirrus to Duluth in the first place, as well a number of other deals. The most logical use would be for aircraft maintenance for an airline or hardcore leasing shop like GE Capital or ILFC, freight forwarding or some type of manufacturing facility. The proximity to the Canada, a rail spur, I-29 and its point on the globe would have some appeal, but it also requires some serious thought and people to increase their risk tolerance. I would also venture that perhaps a federal prison at some level could be located there. With regard to the tanker contracts, I believe that Airbus has already slotted three states for contention, but I can't remember which states are in contention, but they are all in the south(?).
  13. Screw "'SU Hockey", I'm more interested in finding out when the next release for the College Hockey Video game is set.
  14. If the criteria outlined in this article is rigorously applied, any or all of the bases in NoDak could be on the block. Little Tsunamis
  15. I tend to agree. If Reaney's as talented as his numbers indicate, I still wonder why somebody hasn't made him a solid offer. If he is serious about walking on, I think UND is the place to do it, as the program is probably more receptive to walk-ons than most others. However, he would really have to bust ass, and produce, for that to translate into a solid spot on the team, let alone scholarship $$$ down the road. I don't worry about him having a Fournier-type mentality, as Fatty seemed to think he *deserved* a spot, rather than working to earn it and keep it. If Reaney works hard, on and off the ice, he may beat the odds.
  16. Foss merely reprinted the obvious. Without hockey, especially with a team that often finds itself in Title contention, UND sports would not even be on the national media's map, and I doubt the school would have its own sports network. Unfortunately, for 'SU, even when it is fully D1, I doubt it will have the same media exposure, as it will be another name in an already swollen FB and BB pool. Sorry Charlie, but given the number of 'SU alums around MSP, I really doubt beating the gophers is going to do more than get Mason another year on his contract. However, beating Our Lady of the Worthless Miracle U. in the Ho-Hum Bowl may do something ... like getting a box score in the NY Times.
  17. They'll probably just buy more lawn chairs at WalMart. However, I wonder if the costs also include any type of environmental studies/cleanup. One of the "neat" things about demolishing older buildings is finding remnants of prior, often long-forgotten, businesses such as dry cleaners, gas stations, repair shops, etc. who used the property as a dumping ground.
  18. Because Marto is scheduled to perform with Cirque du Solei.
  19. Good grief, how many junior hockey teams has Fargo-Moorhead had? Has somebody been watching "Field of Dreams" under the influence of O'Douls "beer"? There are too many hockey options within an hour's drive for another hockey team to enter that market, whether it's high school, college (including Concordia) or the local park board teams. Fargo is not a "hockey town", and throwing more money into another USHL franchise and arena DT is not going to change that. Frankly, I think the only way this might change is if 'SU ever committed the money and resources to developing a D1 hockey program, which would probably require a major benefactor. But for the foreseeable future I think Chaps' eyes are on travel expenses and jet fuel futures for his new D1 collosus.
  20. Nice catch for the Sioux, and welcome aboard Jake. 6'0 and 160 lbs? Somebody needs to get that boy some Grinders, and a membership to the Y.

    Phil Kessel

What are you talking about? "Duey" is obviously Frank Mazzaco. I'd say Doug Woog, but he's not making enough sense. As far as Kessel, it's nice to see him around the league for a year or so.
