  1. Unlike a lot of forums, I don't know that we've ever closed a thread for discussing or being critical of our policies, though we do sometimes move them here. The nickname forum is an interesting one right now, in that local politicians are involved and some view the nickname battle to be one of "political correctness", which is often ideologically bundled with particular political leanings. However, it's undoubtedly UND-relevant and self-contained, so I don't see it as falling in the same bucket as an anti-Bush or anti-Obama rant in a hockey forum.
  2. I think the real marvel in this thread is GeauxSioux's ironclad memory. Between him and SiouxMD keeping track, I need to start watching myself...
  3. Caps like to give fans their money's worth -- 7 game playoff series, no less. Can't be disappointed in the Caps' regular strength offensive control last night, with SOG coming in at 54-22 (the Caps PP woes do continue, and Montreal played the 3 on 5 perfectly). Given that they've missed on 90 of the last 92 shots, I wonder if the Caps need to change their shot strategy... are they so focused on the "hot goalie" that they've become obsessed with sniping in the perfect shot instead of just throwing it at the net? I think "loosen up" will be among Boudreau's advice. My favorite news quote from today...
  4. Another great game. Habs have to be killing themselves, missing the chance for a 2-0 lead at the last minute would've been a commanding series lead. Of course, that's what New York thought last year... Ovie still seemed pretty quiet, but with 4 points tonight (discount the crazy goal), I wonder if Boudreau is figuring out how to counter Montreal's double-teaming by putting him in a setup role? EDIT -- News stories today make it seem like Ovechkin was much more in his usual style of play in the first period, which is the one I didn't see live.
  5. I just didn't hear about it until the day of the march when I saw it in another thread on the forum here. Anyone could have posted it to the "News" page to get it to the front page, which not only accepts crowd submissions, but even uses crowd votes to determine order. I also would've been happy to post a top headline announcement if anyone had asked, but no one did. As to JackJD's question -- I can't think of anyone officially affiliated with SiouxSports who actually thinks the name is offensive (though doesn't mean some don't suffer from nickname fatigue). I personally am a big supporter of the name, but a bigger supporter of UND; so will choose the latter over the former if it becomes clear to me that the former is harming UND, though I don't think we're yet there. So, mark me down as pro-Sioux nickname.
  6. I was about 5 days late in getting this up, but those who were around in 2001 should remember something like this new page... Sioux Name coverage I'll keep it up as long as there's anything interesting. What 10 years of technology has bought us is... you can add news stories to it yourself by going to the news page and submitting an article/photo/video in the new "Sioux Nickname" category.
  7. Great game -- 5 goals, 3 lead changes, 2 ties. Very evenly matched, the Habs were as aggressive as I expected them to be. After all these years, Gionta is still a thorn in my side.
  8. I can't believe Northern Colorado got a game against Michigan State. Maybe the offer just said "UNC" and Michigan State got confused...
  9. Interesting draw for the Caps.... facing the league's worst 5-on-5 offense, but 2nd best power play offense. The Habs have a wee bit of tradition, with 24 titles to Washington's 0. It's cliche, but I kind of do believe this series comes down to the Caps not being too physical. They have to play Washington hockey, but have to leverage their playoff experience to be a little more nuanced about when to hit whom -- dare I say, learn a lesson from Pittsburgh's progressive experience that pulled them through last year. Update -- this Ottawa/Penguins game has been fun. Good start to the playoffs.
  10. We had to remove a few posts, please remember to avoid posting defaming rumors.
  11. Leader board Taz is still in the lead due a strong opening night, but picked UND to go far. In fact, just two people picked Yale to advance: ksixpack picked Yale to not only beat UND, but to also beat B.C. to emerge from the region. Unfortunately, ksixpack also picked Denver to go to the championship game and has only 2 correct picks so far. grodie1 is well-positioned, despite blowing the East region entirely, has hit everything else.
  12. Another big dump of articles on the news page. If you know of any I missed, feel free to add them...
  13. Taz Boy takes an early lead with a perfect scorecard so far. Bracket leaders Go check out Taz Boy's picks to see how today's games are going to turn out.
  14. As the picks are about to close... A comparison of Sioux fans' picks vs. KRACH probabilities The biggest takeaways, one of which I mentioned above:

  16. Distribution of picks to date Big love for UND, no surprise. Somewhat surprisingly, Sioux fans have slightly less faith in the Beavers than KRACH. No faith in UNH.
  17. You stole my bit Though as I said then... I have actually seen a win, in Columbus. Given the previous posts in this thread, I'm starting to think I should free my calendar for Detroit... sounds like the Sioux stand a real shot.
  18. You know you want to name names...
  19. It's back. The (6th?) annual SiouxSports.com NCAA Ice Hockey Bracket Challenge April Madness is here... Fill out your bracket As always... let me know if you have any problems because mistakes do happen.
  20. I think I have the form set up. As usual, I threw it together in quite a hurry, so errors are likely. Take a look, let me know if you see anything wrong, and I'll post it for general consumption tomorrow... NCAA 2010 Bracket
  21. I see one path for UMD. #14 is the best possible finish, but... To get that requires: Miami over Ferris NMU over Michigan Alabama Huntsville already has a spot. Sacred Heart or RIT will take one. If Union wins they take a slot, so Cornell has to win, leaving UMD at #14 and only two autobids stealing spots.
  22. You got me, I count on you guys for that stuff! I'm actually still trying to figure out UMD's fate...
  23. With NMU and BC wins (assuming the Eagles hold on) UMD falls to a .03% chance of finishing #13. #3 is also getting a lot harder for UND. Edit -- here's what's required for UMD #13 (all of these are required, if not listed, it doesn't matter): Miami sweep, Ferris lose, BC win, BU lose, Union sweep, Sacred Heart sweep
  24. Did a little more crunching on UMD... Cornell losing out is the single most important thing to the Bulldogs. If Cornell wins 0, UMD is #13 or above in 16% and #14 or above 52%. If Cornell wins 1, UMD is #13 or above just 3% and 14 or above 27%. If Cornell wins 2, UMD is #13 or above <1% and 14 or above 10%. Vermont getting no wins also helps a lot. As yzerman observed above, there's definitely something going on with Ferris St & Mich that helps UMD, but it's still not entirely clear to me. It's pretty important that Michigan win 1 game (not 0, not 2), but I can't tell which. There are a lot of situations in which Ferris St wins one or two games and UMD still makes it. RIT losing seems to help, but isn't always required. If there's something interesting to report, I'll probably try to post updates a couple times as games end.
  25. Both the USCHO and CHN PWR calculators seem broken to me in a way that harms the appearance of UMD's chances. That said, yzerman19 is spot on -- Ferris losing is a critical component (though not by itself sufficient) of UMD's most obvious route into the tournament.
