  1. Tough to say -- the way I do it is work on the front (index) page replacing colors until I think it looks good, BUT I do global replacements so the other pages inherit those color choices. For the default skin here, that generally means changing blues to greens and tweaking some of the grays to provide better contrast. That leaves us as at a point like this where the color scheme is consistent, but perhaps not optimally laid out for the thread-viewing pages. I'll work on that in coming weeks, little tweaks often make a big difference. This is definitely a monitor difference. They're very distinct on the two I've tested it on, but that's one of the challenges of these things... making it look good for everyone. I just need a little more contrast, either lighten up the green or (more likely) lighten up the gray. The buttons are pretty distinctly gray for me, I wonder if your monitor is noticeably darker, which would also exacerbate the above... I agree, the gray sidebands are unnecessarily fancy -- a good example of the designer trying a little too hard, IMHO. I would personally increase the width of the white padding and get rid of the gray (whether I actually do so remains to be seen ) The editor and post layout in general are one area that has seen big improvements. The old one was built in an era when rich text editing didn't really work and no one wanted to embed media.
  2. favicon is working for me. Maybe I have it cached, though, which is why I didn't notice.. I'll do some testing. As to the names, which seems to be your biggest comment, this skin is a weird compromise between the old-school ikonboard (now invision)/vbulletin default which had a user-identification panel on the left, and the skin Bisonville uses, which has a user panel on the top of each post. I actually really dislike the user panel on the top of each post, because it takes up a lot of space (if you allow avatars) and I'd rather fill the vertical space with as many posts as possible. However, this particular skin somewhat strangely puts the username in a bar that spans the entire horizontal screen, but puts the rest of the user details in a left-hand bar. It's clearly modeled after the Invision default (see here) but doesn't work as well for the color reasons you mention. Up until this upgrade I had always taken the time to turn all the buttons green, which is honestly work I was hoping to get out of doing going forward, but it definitely did help brand the board somewhat uniquely. That said, I'm thrilled with this skin (w/my color modifications) over the Invision default linked above, which I find to be way too web-2.0 (e.g. digg) wannabe. But I have worked much more on the index screens than the individual thread screens. Honestly, I hate change as much (more?) as anyone and definitely prefer the craigslist look to the ebay look, but the new features here were enough to finally push me to move. Thanks for the feedback.
  3. Thanks. I forgot how dependent the front page is on the forum (tries to load forum posts, etc...), so the change in forum broke a few things. It loads now, and should be back in perfect shape by the end of the weekend. For example, a few of the single login things dependent on the forum are broken.
  4. Just finished a huge forum upgrade. There are lots of great features, some of which I may mention here later. There are also undoubtedly lots of things broken. At a minimum, it's going to be quite a few hours before all the historical posts look correct (each one needs to be converted to a new format). Feel free to report problems here, but I'll also spend a lot of time this weekend hunting them down myself. It's going to do most of the conversion work overnight, so performance should be back to normal Saturday morning.
  5. No personal experience, myself, but here's a little more than made it on UND's page (all courtesy of UND media relations about 10 years ago): SiouxSports.com's Old Barn page
  6. Nah, I've just been behind on Invision for a year, if not two. We're on the 2.x series, while 3.x has been out for a while. The recent 3.1 update fixed all the problems I was waiting on, so now I'm ready to jump.
  7. I hate letting a discussion of forum moderation take over an otherwise useful thread, so I'll just say two things about this... 1) no one received a "warning" for anything in this thread, rather I just thought it an appropriate time to drop a friendly reminder to the thread to keep it civil and non-personal, 2) a discussion of moderation policies is always more than welcome in the admin forum.
  8. Yeah, the mods and I have been chatting about the negative response to a lot of his recent posts... my answer for now is that I didn't react immediately there because I was away over the weekend, but you saw action here immediately because the proper response here was more obvious.
  9. While disagreement is more than welcome, this is a little unnecessarily adversarial. Keep it friendly, folks.
  10. Posts were purged after 90 days for the first year or so of the forum, no members were. I still feel bad about that, but storage was expensive then! However, there is one caveat when comparing SiouxSports membership to other similar forums -- we've had closed registration for about 5 years now, so only actual members (not spam bots, not people who didn't complete their registration) count toward that total. The newest member is actually #7356, which represents the total number of registrations completed.
  11. Same answer, I've been working on SiouxSports.com a lot this week (August always seems to remind me) so should be able to pop it up. Most efforts have been on the new forum that I've been hinting at for over a year now, I actually hope to switch to it next weekend.
  12. Mistake on my part, outbound emails from siouxsports haven't worked for the last week or so. In particular, no registration confirmation emails and no notifications for PMs, subscribed threads, etc... After I fixed it tonight, I had the board resend all the new account validation emails that should have gone out. Sorry for the incovenience.
  13. Sometime when I wasn't looking this thread passed 1,000,000 views. It was started almost 7 years ago today, Jul 1 2003, by schmidtdoggydog. That's about 400/views per day, on average including holidays/summer/etc..., for the almost 2500 days it has been active.
  14. A belated nice job guys... skimming the thread I don't see anyone taking credit for it. Whose is it? I'll try to get the feed integrated into the front page before the season starts! Thanks again guys, I've been pleading with anyone who I think might be capable to start a Sioux football blog for years now.
  15. Sorry for making you repeat, I've been absurdly busy this year and haven't really been following the discussion, just the headline developments. I appreciate your insight! Edit -- I now see your reference to you supplying this info 18 mos ago. I have to change my excuse from being busy this year to a lousy memory
  16. I know I could dig this up myself, but someone might just know... how many Summit schools already sponsor football in a different conference? I wonder what the Summit bylaws say about teams in the conference having to be affiliated with the conference in all sports it sponsors? If there were enough football-homeless Summit teams willing to start up football and/or move to the Summit, that could leave those who play football elsewhere with an interesting choice.
  17. Though it doesn't surpass the most ridiculous things I've posted, the SiouXtra system requirements made me laugh. I see you've fully embraced my "digest" format... it really was inevitable. I just realized how close we're getting to half way through this countdown. Started at 1460, now at 750.
  18. Yep, I'm already working on a big upgrade to the forum that will improve its mobile capabilities. It will detect your phone and use a custom mobile skin that's optimized for phones. The forum will also be available via the free Invision iPhone app. The upgrade should also make the forum compatible with the tapatalk plugin, I'll have to take a look at the plugin at that time to make sure I want to install it.
  19. That's pretty close to why I'm ok with the Caps' early exit. While the rest of the world was shocked, simply shocked, to see the Caps fall to the Habs, those of us paying attention to more than one year of NHL hockey know that the Caps have been a team that made the playoffs every single year (early 00's excluded) but done nothing once there. However, being the #1 team in the regular season is one of those banner-worthy events that I've never seen as a Caps fan, so still thrilled. Sure, it seemed like a good Stanley Cup-run worthy team, but even with a first round exit this still joins the Stanley Cup playoff year ('98?) as one of the two most memorable ever for Caps fans. As I hinted at early in this thread, based on the regular season I was never comfortable with the Montreal matchup, but hey -- at least it wasn't Philly!

  21. Nice article about Kolls... Kolls to play hockey for Fighting Sioux - Hudson Star Observer
  22. Sorry for the delay, big weekend... Nothing has (intentionally) changed, nor is there any problem with the blogs section in any browser I currently have access to (Firefox 3.6.4, IE 8, Chrome latest, Opera 10). I'll poke around the HTML a bit and see if I can spot anything abnormal that could be causing problems for some...
