Spokane Spokesman-Review: Idaho to build on 2009 success

Since Bamba is Canadian, would seem the CFL would have interest before the NFL. An Arena league - there's a couple of minor circuits - would be even more likely.

Surprised that this isn't in the Forum yet: GF Herald: Army Corps of Engineers Study Did anyone anticipate that a diversion would add nearly 2 ft to a flood at Thompson? Certainly not a hydrologist, but why does the peak impact hit the Climax area rather than Georgetown, Mn? Do the velocity effects from the diversion only get negated at Climax? (sounds a bit off color there, sorry ). The Red's channel at Climax is capable of almost double the flow that it is at Georgetown. The study doesn't yet include Grand Forks and communities further downstream. After spending $400 million in GF, would even more work be required? Seems like this study has the potential to have a major impact on politics in the valley. The FM area badly needs a project: these type projections may make the project even more expensive and/or delayed.

Might explain why the men's T&F coaching staff is getting a make-over: they'll have something to sell now. Mussman's next round of recruiting may have gotten just a wee bit easier.

Have papers been signed? Any idea of an announcement date?

Sanford? That would not only irritate NDSU fans, but also SDSU and USD.

Awesome deal. Priceline?

MSU-Moorhead was supposed to announce this month what plans, if any, it has for DI hockey. Has anyone heard anything? Supposedly, the CCHA had potential interest in granting them membership. The new DI move-up rules appear to still allow DII schools to play-up, if DII doesn't sponsor a championship in that sport.

Dagny Knutson decommitted from Auburn - instead of going to college will be part of a training group in Fullerton, CA As long as she doesn't go professional, she still will have her college eligibility. (for UND! ) Two-time high school swimmer of the year US Nationals begin this week

Big Ten's Delany still lusting after New York/East Coast media market - further expansion imminent Next summer may see the "big" shakeup.

Based on some of the open date listings for FCS teams, looks as if both Cal Poly and us are hurting for games. One of the other problems for UND's scheduling is that so many of the other FCS teams begin their conference schedule the last week of September (or earlier). We've scheduled FBS games early, when many FCS dates are open. We have to fill essentially the whole month of October, when few teams have open dates. Would be nice to sign both Montana State and Stony Brook to home and aways. Until we have 11 scheduled dates, any consideration of dropping Sioux Falls is ludicrous. Those suggesting as such can donate the penalty ($50 - $100 K) to the program, and then add another $100 K to schedule another game. Montana's seems very smart to sign this game now, rather than waiting. The number of FCS schools clamoring to FBS pay dates will likely be going up, while the need by FBS schools will be less. With regard to UND, if the new Montana president is in favor of FBS and pursues the WAC, Montana will definitely drop the return UND home game.

The number of FCS-FBS matches may very well be going down, as the Big 12 is going to a 9-game conference schedule and the Big 10 is pondering that. If that happens, none of the western or midwest FBS conferences would need as many games. That's 22 less interconference (many of them may be FBS-FCS) games that would be wiped out every year. The days of NDSU playing Kansas, SDSU playing Nebraska, and USD playing Minnesota all in the same year may be gone. In addition, CUSA may also move to 9 conference games, which drops 12 more interconference game, and Western Kentucky with full scheduling in the SunBelt drops 9 more, and Colorado/Utah to the Pac10 dropped two more (for a total of 45 less inter-conference games - many of which would have been FCS-FBS). Schools in the WAC are the ones that need games, as they now can only schedule 7 conference games with Boise gone. But already have two FBS teams scheduled for next year. Big Ten scheduling issues yet to be resolved Furthermore, until the Big Ten has an internal scheduling plan, they won't be signing more game contracts. Watch for a number of schedule shakeups and contracts that have to be broken.

The NCAA has made a stand that Indian-related imagery is either forbidden or must have tribal support. The United Center containing Indian imagery has hosted NCAA events, which is in direct contradiction to the NCAA's stated goals (not necessarily their current rules.) The NCAA is hypocritical and so are your arguments. Mpls, who is capable of an actual message board conversation but instead consistently chooses to be a flame-thrower, has long over-stayed his welcome and deserves to be banned.

Fort Wayne: IPFW Schedule Difficult
-
With an indoor training facility seemingly closer to reality, is this a sign that UND athletics now plans to make track & field and CC a higher priority? Seems as if one sport / year has received higher support and priority per year: women's hockey, then women's volleyball, then women's softball, and now T&F?

I'm less concerned about next year, but very much concerned about longer-term. For this situation to be abated, a Summit Football League must be started, or a MVFC bid occur, or UND somehow must get football-only membership in the Big Sky. There really aren't other options, barring the long-shot chance of an FBS bid (with a huge donation). UND's has scheduling problems because we have a decent program, we're not in a recruiting area, and it is difficult and expensive to travel to GF. NDSU struggles mightily too just to get three OOC games. USD has been more successful in scheduling for later years because it is a bus trip for more teams (like UNColo) and the probability for a visitor to win in Vermillion is higher. Cal Poly and UCDavis are having some of the same issues, so it's not just us. I'd really like to see more games against Southland teams (maybe a H&A with Lamar while they transition up) or Big Sky teams. But so many of the Big Sky schools are forced to schedule two FBS games just to make budget. UND is forced to schedule two FBS (with low payouts) just to make a schedule. Even a hockey/football scheduling agreement with schools like Maine, UNH, and UMass are unlikely, as those schools have so many cheaper eastern football options. With the dissolution of the Gulf South DII conference, some of those schools look to move to DI and FCS. Perhaps North Alabama or Valdosta State can be scheduled.
-
That is a good point, but seems to be conceding that there aren't any NDSU fans outside the city limits of Fargo. Vermillion and Brookings are small outpost in MidContinents' footprint: if it was only about Vermillion and Brookings, Midcontinent would have a High School network or, out of deference to Minot, Bismarck, and Aberdeen (other large MidContinent Cities), Minot State, Mary and Northern State would all have prominent sports placement.

Totally agree: hockey is what is making a DI move possible. In turn, investing in higher level DI programs will help take UND hockey even higher (more coverage in US and Canada) which in turn helps the rest of the sports. As far as the FM area being left out: a reasonably high fraction of FM fans are Sioux fans so there's demand there for Sioux programming. A lot of issues went into this: NDSU/Taylor/alumni seemingly refuse to acknowledge that hockey is pertinent to the region. It's almost like hockey is beneath them, and is practically contemptible. After all NDSU is going to be the next Boise State: it's not going to associate with low-level sports programming like hockey. But Taylor seems to be doing everything possible to get his teams on FCS. The UND-FCS deal is a huge thorn in their side: gets their goat like few other issues. NDSU has made their bed with ND NBC network. For a time, it seemed like UND would make a play for the ND NBC network (possibly switch from WDAZ to KVLY), and the entire Forum Communications Company would back the Bison. But the 20-odd home dates for UND hockey is just too good for WDAZ, for Forum CC to lose it. The whole Chapman/Marcil presidential House donation and the way the NDSU/KFGO deal came down created a huge amount of bad blood between the two. It's almost as if Forum/WDAY etc won't have anything to do with NDSU, except for obligatory NDSU coverage in the newspaper, unless there is a major olive branch given out by Taylor. Maybe if Taylor ever leaves, things might change.
