  1. I'm well aware of him. Sounds like a good man who has been treated horribly in Iran. And what does that have to do with 2 Chechen brothers setting off bombs in Boston? Absolutely nothing.
  2. You have basically accused an entire group, more than 1.6 billion people worldwide, for the actions of a much smaller group. And what do your top 5 Muslim countries have to do with the brothers that seem to have done the bombing? Brothers of Chechen descent, born and raised in southern Russia, and then living in the United States for more than a decade? Is there any evidence of people from those 5 countries being involved or are you just jumping to conclusions? You're blaming people from those countries because they would have done the same thing if they would have had the chance? Since you like my historical information so much, here's another history related scenario and question. Do you remember a little event from the 1940's? They called it World War II. It was in all of the papers. Maybe you've heard of it? The US was part of a group fighting against Germany, Italy and Japan. US citizens of German, Italian and Japanese heritage were all suspected of being traitors. They went so far as to put Japanese-Americans in prison camps, especially on the West Coast. There was no evidence of wrong doing, just the fact that they were Japanese. Even if they were 2nd or 3rd generation US citizens. Is that the type of justice that you support? Is that the type of critical thinking that makes sense to you? I'm pretty sure that most racists feel "very comfortable with their personal stance". I don't know if you are racist or not, but lumping a whole group together based solely on the basis of religion is something a racist would do. Just look back in history.
  3. Out of 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, and the vast majority of them live in very poor countries on the other side of the planet with very little chance of even trying to come to the United States. The only interaction most of them have with US citizens is with the US military.
  4. Hate is the word that comes to mind when you are so focused on blaming an entire religion for the actions of individuals or smaller groups. I've noticed that you keep mentioning that people are only human, so it is somehow natural to be suspicious or upset with an entire group. That sounds more like ignorance than "being human". How about Muslims, do you consider them human? Are they going to be suspicious if 4 Middle Eastern men walk into the hockey game tonight? You said it would only be human to do so.
  5. The O line is definitely going to be a major factor. They really need to stay healthy. And it will depend on how fast the QBs grow up when they are playing under real game conditions. The offense has the potential to be a lot of fun to watch.
  6. If a white guy shoots up a movie theater, are you going to be worried about every white guy that walks into a movie theater? You know, like James Holmes in Colorado? There are people of all colors, creeds, shapes, sizes, etc. that are going to try and harm others. Picking out one group to hate is a pretty basic definition of racism. In this world we all need to be aware of what is going on around us. And even that might not be enough if you are unlucky enough to be in the wrong place. By the way Chechens are not Middle Eastern. Their country is now part of the Russian Federation, carved out of the southern border of Russia itself, and their background is more European and Caucasian. Not all Muslims are Middle Eastern. Most Muslims are not Middle Eastern.
  7. Golladay is a horse.
  8. Expecting UND to make the playoffs in the first year out of transition was not realistic. Therefore I don't consider it a failure. It was a stepping stone to long term success.
  9. I was born and raised here also, I understand the dynamics. I also know that NDSU had one of the best transitions of any school in the last several decades. Holding UND to that same standard, when UND had other issues to deal with like the problems that developed with the nickname, makes for an impossible standard for anyone. Knowledgeable administrators aren't going to make decisions based on trying to live up to the NDSU standard on the same timeline. The football team will continue to improve, will compete for titles and the playoffs soon, and will be competitive long term. If the team does not improve, a change will be made. Attendance and interest will improve as the team improves. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
  10. Is 4-6 better or worse than 3-8?
  11. First year as a full member of FCS, first year as a member of the Big Sky, and UND finished in the middle of the pack. I don't consider that a failure. It also isn't a great success. It is about what I expected for the first year out of transition. I look for improvement over the next couple of years. As far as the transition goes, it was meaningless. The purpose was to prepare for a higher level. They came out with a lot of young players that appear to be talented, so they should be prepared to succeed during the next few years. I'm not sure who has claimed that UND has accomplished a lot in DI, other than hockey. This is still the first full school year. Most of the teams, including football, have shown they can be competitive at times, and they have all shown that they have a lot of room to improve. If they continue to improve, Mussman will be fine. Faison has more realistic expectations than some fans. He knows that you aren't normally ultra successful at the new level right out of transition. He will be looking for improvement from year to year. If the football team continues to improve, they will compete for a title and for trips to the playoffs very soon. It could be this year if some pieces come together.
  12. You asked a question, whether winning as a player translated to the ability to win as a coach. I answered the question by proving that there is no correlation between winning as a player and winning as a coach. My last sentence referred to the entire group that seems to think that the reason that Hak hasn't won a title is because he doesn't have experience winning titles. That argument doesn't hold any water and should be dropped by everyone.
  13. The statement that Sioux-cia keeps referring to, 'If this makes people take a different look at the Muslim community as a whole in this country...well so be it.', paints with a very wide brush. Be mad at the people that did this. Be mad at the group they actually belong to and follow, if that group contributed to the action. But don't hate an entire religion because of the actions of a minority. That starts bordering on the reactions of another country about 70 or 80 years ago. You said that "it is being reported that the 2 had ties to radical Islam". We have seen the accuracy of many reports this week. People should have learned not to jump to conclusions based on "some reports". And even if the reports are accurate, that isn't a good reason to hate all people that follow the Muslim faith. A lot of people are uncomfortable in large crowds, and are getting more so. There are a lot of bad people on this planet. That's a fact of life. It would be nice if they all wore signs so we knew who the bad guys were. That ain't happening. We have people doing the best they can to control all of the threats. Overall they've done a pretty good job. People have to be vigilant about their surroundings to avoid bad situations when they can. But we can't live in fear. We have to go ahead with our lives as close to normal as we can. Other countries do it under much worse conditions. The bombs in Boston on Monday happen every day in some countries. (As Mafiaman pointed out, most Americans don't notice or care about those.) Something is going to happen in this country again. But the odds of it happening to any individual are pretty slim.
  14. A lot of people don't care about what happens to people in other countries. The news media is covering the things they know will get ratings. That includes celebrities, natural disasters (mainly in this country), shocking crimes (again mainly in this country), etc. The media has become just another business, driven by the bottom line. People have this image that the media is supposed to be a neutral, and impartial force. It never has been, at least not as a whole. If you look back in history you will see that a lot of cities had multiple newspapers, and they often were very biased to represent opposing viewpoints. There would be liberal newspapers and conservative newspapers and special interest newspapers all serving Grand Forks, or Fargo or New York City. And they were even less concerned with telling the actual truth, often printing whatever they wanted so they could try and sway the public. They were often much worse than today's media. People have to learn to get information from multiple sources, learn who they can trust and who they can't, learn not to believe everything they hear, even from the sources they think represent their views, and learn to think for themselves. If isn't going to happen for most people, but that is what they should do.
  15. And most of their members seem to be related. I don't know why people don't just ignore them.
  16. I'm pretty sure Gwozdecky won as a player and a coach also. There are probably others. But believing that Hakstol can't win a title as a coach because he didn't win as a player is a fallacy.
  17. So that dozen or 2 people represent all Muslims? They belong to the radical extremist group of Muslims. Not all Muslims hate America. There are similar extremist groups in other religions, and in other colors. How about the white supremacist groups? The Westboro Baptist Church? They don't represent all Christians any more than the 9/11 terrorists or these idiot brothers represent all Muslims. If you can't see that you have some serious problems.
  18. 2012 was the first year in Division I for UND. If you expected them to win a national championship you are delusional. The 5 years before that UND was in transition. If you thought they were going to win a national title during that time you are ignorant since they weren't even going to get into the tournament no matter how many games they won. And the last 4 years in Division II they made the national tournament all 4 times, losing in the title game once and the semi-finals once. Not exactly a horrible record.
  19. Did Blais win a national title as a player at Minnesota? Gasparini at UND? Lucia at Notre Dame? York at BC? (The answer is the same for all.) Just because you don't win a national title as a player doesn't seem to be a factor in winning national titles as a coach. Can we at least drop that argument?
  20. I was born at the old Deaconess Hospital south of the Grand Forks County courthouse, probably years before you were a twinkle in your pappy's eye. My family has been in the Red River Valley since 1879 (4 years before UND was started and 10 years before North Dakota became a state). Does that make me local enough for you?
  21. I disagree. I could very easily see them doing 1 or 2 away games. Especially if rivalries really start developing with schools like Montana or MSU. Those would be games that attract attention, which would drive the revenue needed to pay for the game. I doubt that they will go to Sac State or Portland State in the near future, but making a big deal out of 1 or 2 big away games is a great way for them to increase viewership. I think that they'll be doing several away hockey series per year before the end of the contract.
  22. Actually, Midco is interested in away games for hockey and football in future years. It will probably come down to money. It isn't cheap to send television crews on the road to broadcast games. They are going to spend a bundle on HD for next year, so it may not happen until one of the following years.
  23. You realize that UND has only been in the Big Sky for 1 season, don't you? And that season was at the end of the transition to Division I? This stuff doesn't happen overnight. Even NDSU didn't win the MVFC their first year, and NDSU fans believe that they are the greatest program in the history of college football.
  24. Those are probably 3 good choices. I haven't been to Giuseppe's lately, but it used to be very good and a little more upscale for a special night out than Mamma Maria's.
  25. Style or philosophy of the coach would probably help the committee choose the candidates that they interview. The athletic director or another staffer would probably share some of that information and the preferences of the athletic department with the committee as part of the expectations that the department has for a coach. The committee doesn't have total control. They get a lot of input into the process from others, especially the department. And the committee will probably present 2 or 3 candidates to the AD with some recommendations. So if the school doesn't want a coach that preaches trap, the committee is unlikely to send the AD all coaches that do preach trap. This process can work well for finding a coach if there isn't a time issue. But it is just like most hiring practices, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
