  1. The discussion was about staff in the athletic department, not every employee at UND. Many people other than head coaches are issued company clothing. Staff can be required to wear clothing with the current name and logo for work or official functions, it is done in businesses of all sizes all over the country all of the time. Just ask anyone that has worked for a company that changed their name or logo. It is all about building the brand for the organization. Athletic department staff can wear Sioux stuff at home or out grocery shopping if they want.
  2. You responded to a post about the jackpot (even mentioned twice). I responded to both his post and yours, again about the jackpot. Then you change the story to be about the "pot". And you accuse me of just wanting to argue when I was just providing accurate information about the original post in this string. They guaranteed that the jackpot would be at least $25,000 (as per the headline in the earlier linked article). The actual winner got more than $50,000.
  3. The jackpot is the prize given to the winner, not the total amount sold. When they give away a Powerball jackpot it is the prize given out, not the total number of tickets sold. The "pot" doesn't have to be the same as the jackpot. And the name alone, 50/50, should be a clue that you only get 50% of the total tickets sold.
  4. I only consider the portion that people can actually take home as the jackpot. They didn't guarantee that the pot would get to $50,000, they guaranteed that someone would win at least $25,000. http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/local/3949174-ralph-hold-largest-raffle-state-history-winner-take-home-least-25k
  5. It was guaranteed to be more than $25,000. It ended up over $50,000. It was sponsored by Midco and Coke.
  6. UND owns the land. That means the State of North Dakota owns the land. The state does not pay real estate taxes. There are no real estate taxes paid on the rest of the campus either. Specials are paid over a number of years rather than all in 1 large sum. The state does pay specials. This special assessment started in 2015 and is being paid over a 10 year period.
  7. There was talk a few years ago, before the UAS development, about building a data center in the Grand Forks area. One of the things they were looking at was locating in a place where they could hook up to both Xcel Energy and Nodak Electric so that they could have back up power in case one system or the other went down.
  8. You proposed another UAS and Research park near the airport. I pointed out that they are not likely to do that since they are just developing the first UAS park near the AFB and have plenty of space to expand that if needed. They also have plenty of space to expand dining services and choices near Emerado, including building such businesses on the UAS park. They are very likely to expand those services since they are projecting to have up to a couple of thousand people working in the park in a few years, and those people will need a place to eat. You've probably heard of supply and demand. The last report I heard was that the Dairy Queen in Emerado was for sale if someone wants a good investment opportunity.
  9. Grand Sky is 217 acres. It will include operations, research, and training. They aren't going to build a 2nd business park for UAS before the first one gets developed and is operational. There is plenty of acreage available around the base if that park needs to be expanded in the future.
  10. It might also be helpful to note that in addition to Dave St. Peter's position as president, the team is currently looking for a President of Baseball Operations, which would supervise the General Manager. Several teams have gone to this model rather than having the General Manager as the highest ranking baseball position. The Twins plan to have 2 different people on staff with the title of President, one for administration and one for baseball operations.
  11. There were a couple of guys that you just wanted to shake and tell them to wake up. Then there was the guy who got it at the end of the season. He transferred to a school for the education and decided to give up football. He knew he couldn't play at the DI level. I'm pretty sure his family had a little money so he could afford to go to college without the football scholarship. Definitely a complex situation and each player has their own challenges.
  12. If they are barely literate they probably aren't good candidates to be students at a Division I school. Everything is about football for them, education is more of an afterthought. It will work out for a few and they may make it to the NFL for a little while. Most of them will probably end up back where they came from. Most of them seem to come from broken homes and low income areas. That isn't their fault. It also isn't their fault that they aren't prepared for college. It's just too bad that so few of them will take advantage of a chance to get an education and maybe improve their lives.
  13. I thought it was interesting. The school really caters to the players. They have some pretty strict rules about attendance and grades, but they also baby the players to get them through it. The focus on grades is just to keep them eligible to play or to move on to a 4 year school, they don't seem to be worried about players actually getting an education. It really shows the importance that the region places on football.
  14. He was given an injury settlement and released. I haven't seen any details, but he injured an ankle during the last preseason game. He had 1 catch for 15 yards during the game.
  15. The biggest money losing sport at UND and at most schools is football. UND lost more than $2.5 million on football in the last reported year. If you are making decisions based on losing money you eliminate football like Omaha did.
  16. Everyone's opinion of the logo is subjective. Of course some people, like young children, may be reflecting the opinion of their parents. As others have noted, not everyone liked the Brien logo when it was introduced. An event bringing back the old logo would definitely bring in a larger response, but it isn't happening. Hundreds of people must have shown up if they gave away 500 pucks plus other things. This was a minor event on a Saturday morning in August, before school has started. There is no way that a huge crowd was going to line up before the store opened.
  17. You still haven't listed anything that would draw a huge crowd BEFORE the store opened. They gave away something like 500 hockey pucks. First, that means quite a few people showed up. But it also means that you didn't have to get there early to get one. Are you going to take some little kids and make them wait in line to play some kids games? The hockey trophy has been all over the region. This was an event to get some PR and bring a larger than normal group of customers out on a Saturday. I can guarantee that the UND bookstore doesn't normally have 500 customers on a middle of August Saturday.
  18. How many people did you expect to be waiting outside for a store to open so they could buy merchandise that is going to be available for several years? Especially on a beautiful Saturday morning in Grand Forks.
  19. Why would the city write a check? They have had nothing to do with this issue. It is a private matter between Hornbachers and the developer (with PepperJax thrown in). There could very well be a lawsuit involved, but those are the 3 parties that will be involved.
  20. Actually, most professional athletes, especially baseball players, ARE paid based on what they did in the past rather than what they are doing now. Free agents get big contracts when they are 30 or 32 or 35 based on what they did in the past. They are rarely worth anything close to the annual contract value during the last 2 or 3 years of the contract. And the same players make a fraction of what they are worth during their first 5 or 6 years in the majors unless they sign an extended contract that takes away at least a couple of free agent years. Has Alex Rodriguez been worth $27.5 million the past few years? Has Josh Hamilton been worth his contract? CC Sabathia? Ryan Howard? Is David Price going to be worth the contract he signed last year when his ERA has gone up by 2 runs this year already? Then there are guys like Prince Fielder, Mark Teixeira, and Justin Verlander getting more than $20 million per year and producing much less than that for multiple years.
  21. A number 1 starter contract is $20-25 million per year for at least 5 years. The Twins have been giving out $12-13 million per year for 3-5 years.
  22. The Legislature doesn't even know for sure what they are doing in the special session, so it is impossible to answer this question right now. However, UND made more cuts during the last round than they needed to do, so those extra cuts may cover part or all of what they might be asked to do after the special session is done.
  23. Gray isn't even a new color for UND football teams. As has been noted before, gray pants and helmets were used 40 years ago.
