I applaud them. DII is a sinking ship. You might have to jump even if the situation isn't perfect. And I know many of you know more facts and figures about this stuff than I do, but I do know that SCSU has a higher enrollment than UND, St. Cloud has a larger population and is growing faster than Grand Forks, St. Cloud is situated one hour north of a major metropolitan area and has a huge upside for growth. As far as their athletics, it seems to me that the only thing holding them back is the attitude of their administration. If that attitude changes, I see know reason they couldn't make the jump (except maybe lack of alumni support - since St Cloud is largely SJU territory).

I've already stated my regression opinion. And it's not all about NDSU. Obviously it's frustrating when your biggest rival moves up and you sit still. But there have been six schools that have left the NCC for DIAA since the 1970s (someone correct me if I'm wrong), including some of the biggest names. UND's conference schedule is diluted, and the non-conference schedule is simply embarassing. Then we should. They're going to study the possibility of further study of the study of moving up to DI. I hope that answers your question.

I guess whether the program is progressing or regressing is subjective and, in my opinion, depends on whether you are primarily considering wins/losses or the level of competition. Also, how far you look back to determine the measuring stick. I concede that from a wins/losses perspective, you'd have to be delusional to think the program is regressing. When I say the program is regressing, I mean no disrespect to coach Lennon and the players, whom I think are classy and have done a great job. The problem with UND football is beyond the control of the coaches or players. Winning a lot of games against schools we shouldn't even be playing against is not a good measuring stick of where the program is at and certainly doesn't excite nor interest the casual fan. Even making the playoffs does not excite the casual fan anymore. From the standpoint of competition, it's certainly defensible to say UND is regressing. In my opinion, UND football progressed from its inception in the late 1800s all the way through the 1970s (when it hit its peak in my opinion). Since then, many schools regionally and nationally have moved up and on while UND has stood still. Which, in my opinion, is the same thing as regression.

I'm not going to try to recreate my entire post from the lost thread. I will encourage anyone interested in the history of UND football to visit this site. Pay particular attention to the 1970s (the glory days of UND football in my opinion). Then ask -- in the big picture -- is the UND football program progressing or regressing? I submit UND is regressing based on the company in which it keeps. UND is a flagship university with a storied history and proud tradition and deserves to be playing similar schools...even if it means losing a couple more games per year.

I disagree with Dr. Kupchella on this point. I think there has been consistency. The NCAA is simply passing the buck to the namesake tribes. If any object, the appeal is denied. If they don't object, the appeal is granted. If there is no namesake tribe, the appeal is denied. It's been quite consistent. The interesting thing will be the appeal of Illinois. This one will force the NCAA to become inconsistent is some way.

I think Yttrium should cordially invite Mr. Chandler to Senser's this weekend.

I think they actually sell out easier because many people who live out of town wait for weekends like this to make the trip to Grand Forks. I know I do!

I predict the NCAA will bifurcate the ruling on the Illinois appeal. They will declare that the nickname is not hostile and abusive, but the Chief still is hostile and abusive. They will simply declare that Illinois is not allowed to bring the Chief, or any imagry depicting the Chief, with them to NCAA tournament games. However, Illinois will be allowed to host NCAA events under that condition. Thus, Illinois will effectively be off the list and the NCAA will maintain some sort of face-saving indignation.

Yep, that was old St. Paul Civic Center, which was demolished to make way for the Xcel Energy Center (where the Wild play). The old Civic Center was legendary for the Minnesota state high school hockey tournament as well.

I completely agree about Senser's. It has been vastly improved. It's tough to beat watching THREE college hockey games side by side on big screens. Which location were you at? I was at the Roseville location last night. Did they improve the other locations as well?

We can. The dead gophers should come flying after the first Sioux goal, the ref will issue a warning to the crowd, and that will be the end of it. That's how it was the last few years in the old Ralph, it's just that nobody has dared to do it in the new Ralph.

If Mankato wants to be known as Minnesota State University, they should be required to change their nickname to the Screaming Eagles. I think that's a given.

Mankato has a larger enrollment than Moorhead. Mankato has a hockey team, Moorhead does not. Both schools are NCAA Divisoin II (in non-hockey sports), but Mankato plays in a better league than Moorhead. I'd say, overall, Mankato emphasizes its athletics more than Moorhead. Both schools are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system (MnSCU), along with many other schools (including St. Cloud State, Bemidji State, and Winona State). Of the MnSCU schools, I believe St. Cloud State has the largest enrollment, with Mankato second. Mankato was known as Mankato State University a few years ago. Moorhead was known as Moorhead State University a few years ago. The other schools in MnSCU have (so far) not elected to change their names. Mankato is making a strong push to be known as simply Minnesota State University, and drop the Mankato part from the popular lexicon.

Don't get me wrong, I think Toews will be a great player. But I remember when I saw Zach Parise play in person for the first time I was more impressed than I was when I saw Toews play in person for the first time. Remember that Zach got a hat trick in his first game, scored 4 points against Michigan in his second game, and had 13 points in his first 4 games. By comparison, Toews has 4 points in his first 4 games. Toews is a year younger, so the potential is there, but I don't think he's going to approach the 61 points in his freshmen campaign like Zach did. Maybe next year he will. I think Brian Lee is a much greater risk for being a one year Sioux player than Toews.

The new screens at the Roseville location are excellent. I'd also be very interested in whether Senser's is able to show the UNH games.

If they really wanted to make money, they'd wear the old blackhawk-style jersies this weekend and start selling them in the proshop.
