Girls High school basketball players to watch in area
iramurphy replied to t-jones's topic in Other Sports
You are right, I had forgotten her name. Sioux might have a shot if they offer her early and get an early committment. Otherwise I am afraid the big schools will be on her. -
If you go to NFL.com Gil Brandts article "Post combine thoughts-offense", he says he thinks Chris Kuper has a good chance to play in the NFL nest year.

Girls High school basketball players to watch in area

Maybe the best kid in the area is the Draxton kid from Fergus Falls. She is very athletic, plays good D and can run. She is only a Sophomore. She hits the three and is 6'0''. The Mankato assistant coach said she could play in the NCC now. I am not sure about that, but she outplayed the Even kid, from Detroit Lakes, who was recruited by UND, SDSU and NDSU and signed with UMD. There is a 6'3"post player from Park Rapids, Mn. who is a Jr. She can run and she hits the boards hard. She has a decent outside shot. I can't remember her name. Both of these kids can play at UND and likely even a higher level. (the real D1 level, not the pseudo D1 WBB in Fargo that has a losing record and got beat by UMD this year). Cory Lof is a Jr from Detroit Lakes is very athletic and has been at UND's camp. She has been contacted by UND. She can run, rebound, play D and is a decent shot. She needs to improve, but has a great upside which is likely what Gene saw when she was there last summer. She will be on a lot of people's list too. The Fergus kid and Park Rapids kids are two kids you could build a future Champion around. -
Warroad had a nice team. Thief has a lot of good kids and good depth and this was a great game. Warroad does indeed play good competition. Year in and year out they play the best ND teams and they also play a number of AA teams. We can't get them to play Detroit Lakes because they want to play "better" competition. Until this year it was understandable. Crookston, EGF, Detroit Lakes, Warroad, Lake of the Woods and Thief River Falls were all good teams. Park Rapids was decent and Kittson had a couple of good kids. This year we gave Warroad a good game and frankly, we were pretty evenly matched. I think the record shows they play good competition year in and year out. The recruiting issue is likely overplayed but some of the Warroad players parents to try to convince kids who play with their kids in the summer to move to Warroad, live with them and play for the Warriors. I also will say that they did a nice job of hosting the Section 8 tourney. They have a great arena and put on a first class show. Their HS band is as good as their hockey team, maybe better. Thief River Falls did the same last year in the baby Ralph. Great UND connections to both programs. Good luck to the Prowlers and congratulations to the Warriors.

Does Bunning go recruiting with Roebuck or Glas. I wonder why Dorn went recruiting with Ruley???

The relationship between the schools is beneficial to both especially in view of the problem with a conference. Unless you are some sort of a jock sniffing camp follower type , you would know there have been dumb things said on both sides. UND was under the impression they and the AC were working toward getting the NCAA to OK a move to D1AA for FB without the move of the other programs. Don't know if it would have happened, but less likely without the two schools putting pressure together. UND didn't think they were ready to make the move mostly with regard to the non-FB programs. UND was probably right about UND. The AC thought they were ready and made the move. So far so good for MBB and not so hot for WBB, VB baseball, track or soccer. It is too soon to tell. UND has had on going studies and committees for the purpose of going D1 and D1AA for many years and in fact long before the AC moved, so UND is doing what they want to do and the AC did what they thought was best. I agree it would not show class to refuse to play the AC when UND goes D1 but I would guess the threat from a fan means less that the threat from the AC coaches and athletic admin folks. I believe the rivalry will be renewed in the future. I just wish we wouldn't have to sacrifice the D2 deal for BB, swimming, track , baseball etc.

Great answer. It might be even tougher hiding it under your coat to get it past security. If you get it in, there might be a way. You might try putting the back feet on Chapman's (the AC pres) left ear and the front feet on Chapman's right ear, then grabbing Chappie by the seat of his pants and hoisting him up to the glass. When his ears are level with the top of the glass, knock the dead buffalo over the glass. The toughest part of all of this is to get Chappie there in the first place, and after you knock the buffalo onto the ice, you have to drop Chappie and run, so you don't get kicked out. If you drop him from too high, the aerodynamics of those ears may float him into someone else's seat and a ruckuss could ensue. Even if that works, you won't get the dead buffalo anywhere near their goalie.

The people of Fargo do support a hockey team. The are great supporters of UND hockey. Drive south of Grand Forks after a Sioux home game and you will see for yourself. Don't kid yourselves, they would support D1 hockey. It wouldn't happen overnight and they would need a great facility, but over a period of 10years they could support a D1 hockey team. What wouldn't work is to do it half-assed. If they were to do that it would hurt their WBB and MBB. I don't think it would be a great move for their school but if they did it and did it right I think they could. Who would have thought they could support D2 and now D1AA football? They have done a decent job of that in the last 40 years. Lastly, I am anything but a fan of the AC but you need to be realistic.

I have been around UND for 36 years. Where do you get Phil has disowned UND? He is certainly a bit different. I don't know how he feels about the Fighting Sioux name but he can be entitled to his opinion without backlash can't he? I haven't read anything solid about his opinion on the nickname. I doubt he cares that much about it, but I don't know for sure. I have not seen any evidence he disowned UND. He has gotten on with his life. He was a great BB player here and deserves to be on the anniversary team based on his performance, not whether or not he is white, black, Catholic, Muslim, Zen Buddist or the combo he proclaims to strive to be. Why does it matter if he is for or against the Fighting Sioux name? If that is how you think people will start calling you Soda Kracker in honor of one of our other closed minded friends. Wait and let him tell us how he feels. Don't believe everything you read from the East and West Coast media.

You are not "disrespected" by The REA, the Grand Forks Community, the Athletic Department nor teh adult fans anymore than all of the students are drunk and obnoxious. Some people have been disrespectful. Most are not. Some students have been drunk and obnoxious. Most are not. You don't need to be disrespectful to other fans and students though. Standing the entire hockey game especially just to stand is annoying to other students and fans. You are in the way. I am not talking about when you need to yell at the ref or respond to the action on the ice. I, at times, was a bit obnoxious myself as a student but seldom drunk at the athletic events. We were obnoxious to the fans from the AC because they were so obnoxious. With that exception, we weren't disrespectful to UND fans and we got along well with the UND police and the arena, stadium and Hyslop staff. It isn't that difficult. Use you brain. We figured out how to have the beverage of our choice at the games. It is more difficult today because of the Muslim terrorist problem and the searches but with a bit of thought and keeping the proverbial low profile there are tougher things in life than figuring out how to have a beer at a game. You are UND students. In response to an earlier comments about students being spoiled, you should be. Just like children in our families, the students at UND are part of our alumni family and need to be spoiled a bit so the experience is a great one. Whether that be attending hockey games, FB games, the pow wow, having a beer or soda with Kracker and the missus at the NA center or on campus, you should know how to act. That doesn't include screaming the "F" word or other vulgar language. It doesn't include racial slurs. Don't wear you UND logo stuff when you go to Krackers for dinner. Show respect for others feelings and you don't have these issues. This has been pretty entertaining for an old guy so keep it up. By the way the poster who pointed out the coordinated cheers by Wisconsin fans is right. Listening to them is a blast. I have always enjoyed playing Wisconsin because their fans and their band are so entertaining. Lastly, when the "phone rings when you are 40", and the Alumni asks, write the check, that is part of being part of the UND Fighting Sioux family..

I agree with the comments about about the kids being recruited. They won't waste money on a kid at this point just to get a local kid. They have commitments from two of the areas best anyway. I don't think anyone blamed "shady recruiting". I think the kids chose to go there for the football opportunity and the scholarship. I simply stuck up for UND's Engineering Department, said nothing negative about Fargo's and did point out there is a big difference between the schools of business no matter what the kids are told. Having been involved in recruiting, I do not think UND's staff does the "same things". I am not aware that Fargo's present staff does anything improper, but there have been so many incidences of academic misinformation in the past it isn't funny. If you think Dale and his staff deliberately mislead a kid, you don't know Dale or the program. Smart coaches don't do that because if things don't work out for the kid, you create bad publicity for your programs. That is one of the reasons they haven't gotten any of our kids in years. Besides, friends don't let friends go to the AC.

I never listen to a guy who had to spend 365 days per year in hell. Good point.

Behind the logo on the north end upper deck.

As I said, it certainly could be accredited by now and apparently is. It was 1995 and it was not accredited at that time. It is not comparable to UND's College of Business but apparently is at least accredited. We were able to get Rocky to back off their claim and change the claim to (it will be).

Good article. There is a mistake. There is no clause in the arena deal that requires UND to keep the Fighting Sioux name or logo. That is an erroneous belief by many. The hockey arena will go to UND at the end of the present lease deal (I think it is 25yrs) and that can't be changed even if UND's name for the athletic teams changes. The arena can go to UND earlier.

If anyone thinks NDSU's Engineering progams are better than UND's you are not well versed on the subject. They are both excellent Engineering schools. NDSU does not have a better Mechanical Engineering prgram than UND. What they have are teaching staff and coaches who simply declare it to be so. The firms who recruit graduates of the two schools agree both are excellent schools. As a former director of High School Relations for UND I am surprised at how many coaches over the years do not know the strength's and weaknesses of our own academic intitutions. Any kid who would choose NDSU over UND for Mechanical Engineering because he thinks they have a bettter program is either being polite so he doesn't hurt the coaches feelings, or was sold a bill of goods. If UND's coaches do not fully understand UND's strengths and weaknesses they won't be as effective as recruiters. I am guessing these are simply D1AA vs D2 choices. It is not the same comparing UND's long standing, accredited, excellent college of Engineering vs NDSU's similar long standing Engineering to comparing UND's long standing fully accerdited, excellent College of Business with their business programs which either are still not accredited, or were only recently accredited. Big difference. Kids from our high school have been recruited there and were told their "College of Business" was accredited and every bit as good as UND's. It was as simple as getting the NDSU course catalogue to show them they didn't have a college of business, only progams in business and none at the time were accredited. You gotta watch those sneaky buggers when it comes to recruiting.

I will do my best to try and find the photo and reference. I believe the Alumni office may have photos. I know the name was changed in the 1930's. I can't tell you when UND was given permission but I had been led to believe it was before the 1960's but I do not have anything that I could share with you without researching the Alumni records, The Bismarck Tribune records, the GF Herald records and the Dakota Student records. Because I don't live in these communites it will take some time but if you wish I will do my best to try and gain some credible evidence to answer this clearly for all of us. I have read Doreen Yellowbirds column and about two months ago she did write a column and said UND was in fact granted permission by elders to use the name. Take that for what it is worth. I don't find your comments harsh, they are a very rerasonable request to back up statements with facts rather than my vague memories of a photo and what I have been told by wha ti thought were credible sources. As I said I will do my best to find the references in question. Fpr what it is worth I will ask you the same question I have3 asked my pal Kracker. What if we could use this issue to improve education or activities for Native American kids? Ideas suggested have included using UND staff or programming and resources to bring workshops to the reservations for school staff. Having Athletic camps, math camps, music camps etc. for Native American kids. I was at the hockey game tonight and even a dumb Irishman like myself is smart enough to see there could be a lot of positive results for Native Americans using this very issue as a tool and rallying point rather than polarizing ourselves and our kids. Depends on how we wish to deal with it. Would we be any worse off? Why not consider it?

I believe the poster refers to the fact that the last "official stance" was support of the name (with recommendations). Recently they took an informal stance against the use of the name then never did finish the formal process to oppose it.

Sorry, that would be Rutgers 24 ASU 17 at the half.
