  11. As a former athlete, I can back this up. Every one of my teammates was (and still is) proud to wear the Fighting Sioux name and logo, and we represented our school with class, dignity, and honor. We would often get comments from places we competed regarding how respectful and well mannered we were. I, like Sioux-cia, feel that I am Sioux, and I think all my teammates would say the same thing. We may not all be Native American Indians...but we are all Sioux.
  12. I see Zach is playing with a green stick...coincidence? I think not!
  13. The NC$$ hasn't been, at best, hypocritical through this process, but I suspect that those saying they won't support the NC$$ after this will still be watching March Madness this spring.
  14. This general statement has been made by many on this forum. It seems more and more juvenile every time I read it. It reminds me of a 3rd grader..."If I don't get what I want from you, then you can't come to my birthday party!" People who want to go to a certain casino shouldn't feel pressured by their peers not to go, just because a group of people in the NC$$ think they know better than the rest of us. Also, why would we change the pregame images where we show we still have pride in the name and consider it honorable? Just because you don't get your way doesn't mean you pout about it and embody the disrespect you have adamently denied throughout the process.
  15. Nobody from the 3rd ranked (by INCH) team, but two players from the 5th ranked team? I know that standout players don't make a team, but nobody from UND?! Also, Odd that only 6 of the total 23 spots (players and coaches) were from the most dominant League in the country...4 forwards and only one defenseman?! We have 4 of the top 5 teams (by INCH) right now in the WCHA whatever, this 'Dream Team' thing is stupid anyway...
  16. After a strong showing in her first meet of the year, Margaret Landberg was awarded the NCC Cross Country runner of the week. Margaret finished in second place at the Ron Pynn Invite, and her time improved her time by 1:12 over last year. Congrats Marge!
  17. Meet starts in 15 minutes! If you're in GF, get out to Ray Richards to cheer on the Sioux!!
  18. On Friday at 4:00 at Ray Richards Golf Course in Grand Forks, the Ron Pynn Invitational Cross Country meet will begin with the women's race. The men will follow at 4:45. For those of you who are in town and love to watch the Fighting Sioux, come out and support two of the hardest working teams on campus. This will be the first meet of the year for the Sioux harriers, as their meet last week was cancelled due to weather. The UND course is one of the most fan friendly there is, with the runners snaking across the golf course up one fairway and down the next. It should be a good test for the Sioux, with some strong teams coming in to compete. We have some local athletes on both teams, like Richie Spitsberg and Jeremy Jones on the men's side and Jessie Lichter on the women's side. Also, for those who aren't aware, the Fighting Sioux will be hosting the NCC Championship, on the same course, later in the year (Oct 22).
  19. For anyone who'll be in Grand Forks this weekend, and wants to see the Fighting Sioux Hockey team in action early... 2nd Annual UND Men's Hockey - 'They Can Skate' Race! Think you know the UND MEN'S HOCKEY TEAM? The UND Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) has organized a fundraiser to benefit the MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION to test you. On Saturday September 17th the Fighting Sioux Men's Hockey Team is running a 10K race against each other at University Park. We're opening it up to the public to guess which player will finish in what time. It is $5 minimum per bet/donation, with all proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Anyone who makes a bet will receive a free donut and coffee or hot chocolate. NOTE: You must be present at the race to be eligible to win! The betting opens at 8:30am at the starting line and closes at 9:00am. Race starts at 9:00am at the SW corner of the park (University Ave. & N. 25th Street). Five closest bets will win autographed paraphernalia by the 2005-2006 Fighting Sioux Hockey Team. If you wish to make a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation but cannot attend the race, please send checks made out to the UND SAAC, to: Jason Holt - SAAC, PO Box 9013, Grand Forks, ND 58202. For Questions - Contact Jason Holt at 701-777-2351 or Meghan Mutrie at 218-779-2261. UND Student-Athletes are not eligible to bet due to NCAA rules. This is a wonderful chance to start your day before the Potato Bowl Parade and see your hockey team on a new level. For a great cause
  20. Having never been to the Fargodome, I can't really comment on the original topic of this post, but the talk about Memorial Stadium got me thinking... Why not hold the first home game of the season at Memorial Stadium? The weather is usually still nice, and it would be great for the fans that remember the old games there. From what I understand, the school pays quite a bit of money to rent the Al each game it plays there...why not save some of that money, put some of it into refreshing Memorial, and hold a UND Tradition game there to start every year? "Refreshing" the stadium would take quite a bit of money, probably more than they would normally pay the Alerus to hold a game there, but I would be willing to bet that some alumni would help out. I don't know, maybe its a crazy idea, but I would be willing to pay a little extra to see the Fighting Sioux play a real home game outdoors again.
  21. This year at the track meet in Moorhead, much of the team was standing in the infield watching our pole vaulter, Clark Carlson, who was at that time going against another athlete from NDSU for first place (yes, we still compete against them from time to time), when we realized that not a single member of the team was "recruited" in the traditional sense. We started joking about being team 'NR' or 'No Recruit.' Tyler Stoltz, who has gone to the national meet in both indoor and outdoor multiple times, was not recruited. He actually contacted Grandall first. Lee DeKrey, the ND State Cross Country Champion, and who was one of the top conference performers in both track and cross country, was not recruited. Matt Litzinger, NCC javelin champion and now school and meet record holder, was approached by Grandall as a freshman in school the day before practice started. He did not come out until this year because of it, and proceeded to have a stellar season. Gersezewski was not recruited; Yates was not recruited; I can go on and on... The point is, Grandall does very very little recruiting. I ate lunch with one recruit two years ago, and it was the first official campus visit for a recruit since he has been head coach. I don't know of a visit since then (although there may have been one or two) I know that Grandall went on his first home visit in many many years just a year ago. I'm sure that the facilities we have at UND for track are not a positive as far as recruiting. I have heard that Kinsey Coles really wanted to come to UND, but decided to compete for the Bison because they have access to an indoor facility. UND 92,96 - you comment on how 'you all know the facilities are sub-par,' but just how bad I don't think you can realize without being on the team. Our locker room is easily the worst of any team here at UND...it is, to say the least, embarrasing. However, this does not excuse the extreme lack of effort. There are other points to sell the University on...good campus atmosphere, great academic programs, the chance to excel in a terrific conference. Our team has a great relationship between the athletes because we all are self-motivated...we have a decent outdoor facility as well. This is not meant to be a personal attack on Grandall, he is one of the most decent men I have ever met, but as a coach at the division II level, it doesn't seem like he has the skills, the initiative, or, as you so eloquently put it, hunger that it takes to succeed at this level. We haven't won, or even come close to competing for, a conference title in ages... Now, I obviously don't know everything that happens behind the scenes in Grandall's office, and I'm sure he does a lot of things to make the seasons run smoothly. But as far as a Track Coach, and especially as a Cross Country Coach, I think UND could do better.
  22. UND has been in need of an indoor practice/competition facility for a long, long time. During the winter months, before the Betty was built, we would be practicing in there with up to 6 teams at a time (men/women track, baseball, softball, men/women basketball) I have been told that "there are plans" for an indoor track since I came to UND as a freshman, and I still don't see anything. I was a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC) and the issue was brought up multiple times, and still nothing. The athletic department has been sitting on its hands on this for a long time. If they really wanted to build us a practice facility, they would have done it by now. People will say "they were busy building Engelstad." No. That was a private donation, so was the Betty. There could have been a fundraiser, or a push from Grandall and Clay to actually get something done or at least publicly announced. Why have they waited so long? Instead it has been, "oh, we have plans for that space." People have said that they want to wait until the new AD gets here, but if they had enough planned why not put out an architectural drawing and say something like "this is what we want our student athletes to be practicing in in 4 years." Then the new AD could come in and say, "yep, we're going ahead on the track," or "we're making some changes to the initial plans." The athletic department can't just say, "oh wait we wanted that first" and just get what it wants. The EERC has been growing steadily, and it has been one of the most successful pieces of the University for a long time. It makes sense for them at this point to continue expanding, and to continue that expansion near the Old Engelstad. To the east and north of EERC are residential areas...how long do you think it would take to convince people to move out of their homes? Money to buy the property doesn't convince everyone, and the buyout process could extend for years. These are people's HOMES. It will be most beneficial for everyone if the EERC is allowed to expand into the area occupied by the Old Engelstad arena. I'm sure I want this indoor facility just as much as anyone (I ran on the track and cross country teams for the last four years, and it gets pretty cold outside in the winter), but the way the process has been handled doesn't make sense. Put it over on the Bronson property...there is plenty of room, and besides, Ralph's original idea was to eventually have all the sports facilities located over there. The athletic department knew it, but they didn't make a big fuss when other people wanted to develop homes and businesses. Sicatoka, I have always respected your posts as you seem knowledgable in most things you say here, but calling an EERC hydrogen research facility an explosion potential? Give me a break. I guess we should start boycotting gas stations and call our congressional representatives to have them shut down the public transportation of explosive gasoline while we are at it. Do some research before you make the EERC out to be a hazard to everything within a three block radius.
  23. It's too bad Ziggy left to UMD, or we wouldn't have had to find a new goalie...and in the overtime game, Ziegelman beat Walski
  24. I'd like to hear a little less "pre-packaged" crap music between whistles. The Ralph really doesn't have to have music playing between every puck drop...and the band should have more playing time
