  1. Okay, if it can't make money doing concerts. Reconfigure the building and change its mission. As Star said previously, co-locate other functions to the facility. Place the library and proposed fitness facility there. Market it for as a conference center. Create a children's museum in it. Stop trying to keep up with Fargo and market Grand Forks as something different. Since the Sioux only play 4-5 games a year in the arena portion of the facility, move football back on campus.
  2. Tying a few different threads together, I'm forwarding the idea of moving football back to Memorial Stadium. The Alerus has been a nice home for Sioux football for the past 10 years, but is it a long term home? Let the city transform the Alerus. I know in the past, I have been an advocate for Sioux football in the Alerus. But there are reasons for moving out of the Alerus. The Alerus is not expandable, Memorial is. There was a thread last year about the poor atmosphere outside of the Alerus on game day. Move back on campus and I am sure that would change. I read in a football blog from a southern school that they like their advantage over northern teams that come south when there is high heat and humidity. Reverse that and have them come north when the weather favors North Dakota. I also read on Egriz, when turf was a topic of conversation, that North Dakota's practice field was better than the game day turf. Practice where you play. Make it a true home field. I don't know how many people attend Sioux games, because they are indoors, but I think an increase in numbers from students would offset it. Obviously this will take time and money to upgrade Memorial, but money won't be spent on rent for the Alerus either.
  3. Thanks Wyo. With that I'll revert to my "I will be the first to admit, that I'm no expert on Arbitron ratings" statement, but will keep the "We'll see how it shakes out in a couple of years" statement in my hip pocket.
  4. Grand Forks is not alone in its predicament regarding a city owned facility. There was a story just yesterday about the Pensacola Civic Center losing money and what to do about it. Article and Video piece. I think Local Boy and Whistler need to somehow get on a committee and see what they can do to change the operating structure of the Alerus. They have both been passionate about it. In the old thread regarding the Alerus I had suggested that perhaps the Alerus shouldn't be chasing the big shows. Go for more dates with smaller shows. I think Star had a great idea about co-locating the library and fitness center there.
  5. I will be the first to admit, that I'm no expert on Arbitron ratings, but I do have a couple of points about radio and in general and my listening habits. First point is that the ratings are from 6:00AM to midnight, which obviously would include Sioux hockey. Next, when you get someone tuned into a station for a sports event you are more able to capture them for other programming. You build loyalty. When I travel to New Orleans I listed to WWL. I started listening to them, as the home of the Saints. Now that is about the only station I listen to in New Orleans. A bonus is that they have such a strong signal I can get them in Pensacola. We'll see how it shakes out in a couple of years.
  6. I see the Fargo Arbitron ratings are out and WDAY isn't in the top 10, Of course these numbers are from Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 when they were the NDSU flagship. UND's flagship was #1. We'll have to see how the numbers change now that Sioux sports is on WDAY. I would think that WDAY's numbers will go up, especially in the spring with Sioux hockey. Go Sioux!!

  16. EERC Announces Fiscal Year-End Financials: 2010 Marks Seventh Consecutive Record Year for the Center Good news, but is it accurate? The following is from last year... Am I missing something?
  17. There was a thread last month regarding the USSR flag hanging in the Barn The Barn was located roughly where the Laird Core Library currently sits. I didn't go to many games in the barn, but I do remember how cold it was and I couldn't wait for period break to go out to the "warm" area to get hot chocolate.

  23. It doesn't matter if you are a Republican or Democrat, what they are collectively doing in DC is scary. I read this piece over the weekend. It makes you think about where we are heading as a nation.
  24. Vonesh is one who popped in my head when I read Coach's post. No he isn't a dI dominant, but he would have held his own at that level.
