2024-25 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
hockeytherapy13 replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
It's not that the players not physically make a pass. It's that the team doesn't have enough plays or options through the neutral zone. They often make a single stretch pass cross ice that is easily read by the other team, therefore we either turn it over right before the blue line, or we don't have enough momentum and speed to retrieve the puck once we have to quickly dump it in. We need to start having 2-3 quick passes to come with speed through the neutral zone so that we aren't getting sniffed out after one pass. Some of these more skilled teams that can use their skill and speed often start with a cross stretch pass and quickly follow up with a bump/touch pass toward center ice to the next forward supporting with speed. The coaches need to get some serious reps in practice regarding play through the neutral zone and practice it to the point of cognitive muscle memory so that these guys have options. If they are practicing plays like that, it hasn't shown up in games consistently. Because on the occasion they actually perform 2-3 quick passes back to back to back, thats when they start to actually create some space and chaos on the other end. -
$325k in 2023 https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/840402510 If course it would be a jump, but still not a being enough jump to get him to UND. Maybe he goes to Michigan sometime since he’s coached there before, but let’s not put our self on an eternal pedestal. I’d actually love to be proven wrong because him ending up here would be remarkable for our program. Our recruiting of talent is better than what a lot of people on here are saying, but the inability to get that talent to succeed is the massive problem (dead horse beaten)

This idea that CC is some program that is a stepping stone possibly to Nodak is confusing to me. As stated, Mayotte is bringing his program back to prominence and it's not like they lack resources there. Although we are a blue blood, we currently are not a big enough leap up the rung to make him want to jump ship from CC to Nodak. It would be awesome for us if that was in the cards, but it's simply not going to happen.

Pretty sure 2018-19 had the same result of loss and a tie
-
Fist pumping and celebrating after a meaningless shootout win, are you effing kidding me?
-
That’s not true. We shoot it wide or high in OT, too
-
Dumps it to their defenseman 10 feet into the o zone. It’s incredible

I came here to say the same thing. Coming into the season I thought he’s by top 6 material but he’s not so let’s stop putting him there. @scpa0305 had what could have been one of the best lineups we’d have. Either way it’s time to keep Kunz with Schmaltz as part of a heavy and reliable line to check hard. And trying to turn Schmaltz into an offensive dove defenseman by putting him with Perron is so frustrating. We are wasting Swanson and Perron’s talents by pairing them with the wrong styles
-
I’ve been hoping for this for a month. Keeping the lines balanced has been one of the issues leading to offense drying up. We have one line that seems to have gelled somewhat but Swanson has been playing the wrong guys all season
-
Not going to happen
-
Glad to hear it. That’s a huge bump to the team so that the top 4 can get a little help again.
-
For those of us unable to watch, has Strathmann been getting shifts?
-
TJ in the net. TJ wasn’t bad last Friday but this should 100% be Hobie’s net tonight
-
That would be massive
-
I like the sweep prediction but do you really see us getting 5 goals against them in one night? I think we maybe get that many the whole weekend.
-
This is one of those times where Berry is darned if he does and darned if he doesn’t. The 5x5 offense was absent and the lines had no chemistry rolling. Plus lines were changing due to one injury after the next. So they needed to change in a hurry. Safe to say this coming weekend we will see a lot of the same lines as Saturday unless Jammer is back in the mix. The James-Boisvert-Strinden line will stay the same for sure because that was a line that was generating. We’ve had a lot of talk about Omac getting rolling which obviously needs to happen . But the person we badly need to get off the milk carton is Wilkie. Because if he starts to get some to drop then it seems like his line with Swanson and Perron will pop. Swanson is still struggling to make plays at this level so if he can start finding lanes to give Wilkie and Perron the chance to showcase their shooting then maybe we can finally get some 5x5 consistency.

No one is disputing that these games don’t matter. Every game matters all year long, maybe even more with non conference obviously. What some people are saying is that there haven’t been enough games played throughout the country for the pairwise rankings to be accurate yet. They are too volatile because more games need to be played amongst all teams and conferences. Give it about 3-4 more weeks and then it’ll be a more appropriate prediction.
-
The games the entire season matter, but looking right now isn’t as important because there still need to be a few more weekends if hockey for relevance
-
The D zone coverage notably better last night than Friday. RMU got tons of great looks Friday whereas they only got a few last night. Major improvement. Just really dry offense
-
I have a feeling Jammer will still be on the bench as an extra voice to keep the guys jacked up. Hoping Monty and Littler still get some reps but I’m Guessing Andrew won’t get much since he’s gotten penalties the last 2 games with his limited ice time. Not a great way to get more ice time haha

Being a center is more than just faceoffs and Omac is better at center than wing. But he really isn’t great at faceoffs so I was blown away that they had him take the opening faceoff in OT (and of course he lost the draw). Wtf? Have schmaltz or Wilkie take it and then just trade guys out. Plus having Swanson on the penalty kill? The second he stepped out on the ice during the PK I was confused and then less than 20 secs later we allow a goal while he’s out there. and FFS break up the 7-15-21 line. They keep trying to make it work and it’s going nowhere. When they finally had 26 and 21 on a line together things started happening. I’m not a great hockey mind and I don’t get too low on the staff like a lot of people do but there were decisions made tonight that were mind-blowing.
-
I was thinking the same thing. We have been unimpressive defensively lately (obviously injuries are killing us there) so I have a feeling we will see 2 high-scoring games with night one being like 4-3 OT in our favor. Then 5-3 the next night. Take the over. Feeling a sweep but it’s going to be ugly.
-
Didn't we outshoot them like 89-30 that weekend? That was the season where we couldn't score goals to save our lives no matter how badly we outplayed a team. It was like a season's worth of the 2011 Frozen Four against Michigan (sorry to bring up that tragic event)

Driscoll was easily our best portal goalie, I'd take him again in a heartbeat. Other than that it seems like the others underachieved, especially with how good Ludvig was at Miami compared to his season last year. I wouldn't mind seeing us grab a 20-year old from the CHL to compete with Hobie next year so Heil can have another year to cook. I'm betting Hobie gets the start this coming Friday; Not because TJ was awful but because it's a weaker opponent and you know they want him to get more games. -
As frustrating as things have been so far, I really think this team is going to reach another level. This feels like a Hak-type season in that we stumble in the first half and have a really good second half if we can get healthy. Now does Hak-like mean that we get to the frozen 4? Probably not because one line or group of players is taking the reins offensively but I think this team makes the tourney and doesn’t waste the Fargo regional again.
