  1. I would also like to congratulate Coach Roebuck on his 600th win. He is a great coach who gets the best out of his players. He also is a great ambassador for the University of North Dakota. Anyone have any thoughts on how long he will stay coaching? Once Brewster came back, it appeared as though he would be the heir apparant to Gene. Perhaps he is...hopefully not for at least a few years yet. I would like to see Gene get a shot at coaching the team to a NCAA tournament birth once we get in the Big Sky.
  2. How many non-BSC FCS teams are there west of the Mississippi? Other than the Dakota schools and some Texas Schools and UC-Davis/Cal Poly, I can't think of any. It's much cheaper bringing in a local DII than an out of the region FCS. My guess is that the Big Sky will allow teams to play other Big Sky teams that aren't on their schedule as a non-conference game.
  3. First off, do we really want to be a part of the current WAC? It's a conference which is struggling to find an identity right now. I agree with the last few posters as far as teams wanting to schedule us if we keep the Fighting Sioux name and go back on the sanctions list. I mentioned in another post about the Dartmouth and Texas Tech examples. Do you think those schools would want to schedule UND and again and have to deal with criticism they received the last time they played us. Other schools/Presidents will catch wind of examples such as those and it will snowball meaning many teams will at least think twice about scheduling us if not flat out develop policies such as Minnesota, Iowa, etc...imo
  4. I have been pretty hard on the basketball team the last few years...especially Coach Jones. Although I'm not ready to jump on the coach's bandwagon quite yet, I do have to say I liked what I saw in yesterdays game. Granted there were a few stretches where we didn't play well but that happens to most teams...especially young teams. The offense looked better than it did agains UVU. There seemed to be less "out of control" drives to the basket and more ball movement. We shot an aweful lot of 3 pointers, but many of them were open looks and we were making them. The defense still needs some work. There were quite a few times when we were out of position down low (especially Allard) which led to fouling. All in all it was a good rebound performance. The team seemed to have used the UVU game as learning experience. Granted they weren't playing a great team, but UTPA put up a challenge and the Sioux didn't collapse under the pressure. A good win for a young team.
  5. I was curious if anybody else could find it on DirecTv as well. All I can find is a listing for the Men's game at 8:00 pm on channel 617.
  6. What I don't understand about this whole nickname debate is why wasn't anything done in the legislature two years ago? Why did the debate have to be drug out so long and get to the point of where it is now before they decided to act? At some point, fans and alumni, need to ask themselves is keeping the nickname worth all the potential negatives that come with it? Sanctions would most definitely hurt the football program but it's not just about home playoff games. Even if Standing Rock were to eventually vote to keep the name, we need to again ask ourselves, is it worth it? How many schools would want to play the Fighting Sioux and deal with the potential "issues" (real or perceived) that go with it? We saw it when we went to Dartmouth for hockey. We saw it when we went to Texas Tech for football. With so many options to play other schools, why would DI schools want to play UND in non-conference sports and have to potentially worry about this "potential negative backlash"? I would venture to guess that scheduling in all sports, including hockey, would become more difficult as time goes on and more of the "Dartmouth/Texas Tech" examples take place. Another thing to consider is what the NCAA may do. Some people are willing to forgo home playoff games to keep the name. What if the NCAA decides to pass a resolution to ban teams with "unapproved" names from all playoff games or impose other sactions? The NCAA could decide to make things very difficult just because it's their league and they can. I would like to keep the Fighting Sioux as our nickname just like a majority on this board. But at this point in time, we need to ask "Is it worth it" or "at what cost?" If somehow, UND were to keep the nickname, I believe the NCAA would make sure that there were "some costs" that came along with it.
  7. UND makes another list of "top colleges." This one is based on students accepted and those that enroll which is how they define "student yield." http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/2011/01/21/most-popular-national-universities
  8. It shows up as being on channel 617 on my DircTV lineup. 618 is the FuelHD channel...
  9. You could also throw in his troubles vs. the NAIA teams as well. Watching the game last night, you could clearly see there is some young talent on the team. You could also clearly see a team that was often out of control and not well coached. There have been a few examples posted already in regards to calling time outs when we didn't have any or calling time outs when we shouldn't have. I also really don't understand the offense that we were running most of the game. It appears as though our big guys only job is to set picks for the guards and let them try to make a play. Somehow we outscored UVU in the paint...not quite sure how that happened. I saw very few times where the bigs would post up and the guards would pass down low. Mostly I saw perimeter passing for most of the shotclock and then guards settling for outside shots or scrambling on a drive. Our offense just doesn't seem to have any flow or any purpose. Although I'm not a fan of Jones, I also am not advocating he be fired immediately. I'm sure he has another year at least. What I would like to see is for this team to be well coached and to have an identity. Right now they just seem to be relying on talent alone. For what it's worth, I have only seen a couple of games this season so take my opinion for what it is...an opinion...and we know what they say about opinions...
  10. Coaching speaks for itself...I have never been a Jones fan. He has recruited some talent, but he needs to be able to coach the talent.
  11. Agreed...This team is young and perhaps they are still "learning how to win."
  12. Chalk this loss up to missed free throws and youth I guess...
  13. And perhaps the most amazing stat of the night, Schuler picks up his first foul of the game.
  14. Fourth overtime by the way...
  15. This game is unbelievable...I just don't have the words to describe it anymore.
  16. This game just gets crazier and crazier...
  17. Make them both here and you win. Sioux by two and going to the line with 6 seconds left... EDIT: 1-2 from the line, three point game and UVU ball with 5.9 to go...
  18. Points in the paint are 42-12 in favor of UND! Yikes...it sure didn't seem like we were working to get points down low. A good portion of those points have been on drives by the guards. Good stat none the less.
  19. UVU appears to be wearing down as the Sioux are looking a bit quicker and hustling a bit more on the last two possessions.
  20. Nice move by Brekke down low. Keep pounding it in to the paint.
  21. Webb isn't having a great game but played some good D on the last possession. Triple OT!
  22. No kidding. It's a battle of who wants to win the least it seems like.
  23. Unbelieveable hustle by Mitchell. Double OT!
  24. Wow...just wow. Misses the first free throw and 0-3 for Webb on the night. The Sioux as a team are barely over 50% from the line tonight. Make your free throws and you win the game.
