I'd be interested in that too. Giving the timing, you'd think it's going to be a complete non-issue with the players. Would have been interesting if it happened the week after their season ended, that would have been a different story.
-
If you took a poll right now, Bubba's approval rating would not be good. Would the majority of season ticket holders / fans want a change at head coach? Yes. I'm curious when things really shifted. You could feel it picking up steam the last couple years, but now it feels like a complete landslide.

2023-24 University of North Dakota Hockey Season

Face off numbers for the year. I just used those that I remember being listed as a Center on the line charts. 14 - 58.45% 27 - 56.25% 22 - 47.62% 8 - 45.22% 21 - 45.16% 11 - 35.06% Highlighting 8's numbers. I'm looking for any reason why he continues to stay as 3C. FO % would not be it. I'll keep looking. -
Interested in the Nose Tackle position next year. Looking at the 2023 Fall Prospectus, UND would return 5 of 6. Any word on Schweigert, Newel or Eckheart?
-
Butsch is one of them via his Instagram. Next name is a guess but could see Riley Gerhardt.

Perrson was excellent & I forgot who said it, but I agree that this felt like the team we watched in the 1st half. Great road W last night!

Seems like such an obvious combo. Too simplistic of a take ( @burd ), but I cannot figure out ( & @Oxbow6 is right on) why Berry refuses to put Schmaltz as the 4th line C. For those saying it’s his Face Off %. I believe he has the lowest of the 4 that were Centers last night.

Just noticed that Youngstown is bringing in 14 new transfers mid-semester. I followed this pretty closely this off-season, up to this point, it's been a disaster for UND. It's worth noting. If the defense is not fixed next year (3rd year in a row), through youth / development / portal, it's 100% on the Coaching staff. It's so frustrating watching programs you hope are peer programs (NDSU / SDSU / Montana) all riding this incredible momentum. On the flip side, it feels like this program is about to fall off a cliff. Everyone is seeing it coming, but my perception is this coaching staff cannot fix this. Over their heads. Let it play out, but if it plays out how it seems it will, it won't be a surprise.

I’m not either or that Persson ultimately isn’t the better goalie. I used the word earned very deliberately. Trying to get better about not getting too far into the weeds w/ situations like this. I think it’s worth noting though.
-
I know this will be unpopular, but again I’ll ask, does performance matter ultimately under Berry? How you handle goalies is no doubt delicate, but based on Hedquists performance the last two games, you would have thought he’d earn the net next Friday.

Maybe it’s time for a little more of a knee jerk reaction from the coaching staff. After analyzing the game, reward those that played well. Keep shaking things up. It’s been a common theme for years, there does seem to be a real lack of accountability for certain players. James / Schmaltz. It took (imo) way too long for one to be “promoted” and the other to be “demoted”. We all want the same thing here. Great news is they are in a fine spot overall. Lets get this thing headed the right direction, starting tonight!

5 straight games, four straight losses. Nuance with every goal of course. If you thought he looked sharp last night, then we disagree. It’ll be alright, not everything has to be positive in the world of UND athletics.

5th game in a row where he’s sub .900. That’s awful.

Pathetic. Start Hobie tomorrow.

2023-24 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
AJS replied to AlphaMikeFoxtrot's topic in Men's Hockey
Not shocking that a 26-year-old 5th might look the part over a 19-year-old Freshman. Tough to develop if you rarely get minutes. It's simple for me, it's completely unnecessary to bring back someone for a 5th year to play a 4th line roll, killing one player's development. Looking ahead. You don't need Albrecht for a 6th year or Jamernik for a 5th year, playing a roll that Boisvert or Croal could easily step into. Develop talent. I do want to clarify, I don't dislike or think Albrecht is a bad 4th liner, he's not. It's just a younger player can play that roll and succeed and develop. It's over. In the middle of a great year, so moving on. Another learning experience for this coaching staff. -

You're right on. One more year to hope Berry learns. The question he needs to ask is can this players skill set be replaced by someone already on the roster or with an incoming Freshman. Persson is the only player who should be considered after this year. It really is crazy that Berry did not see this coming. It's so embarrassingly short-sided. It wasn't any different with Hain and Senden, but you had way too many people throwing a parade when that was announced. -
I'm not breaking any news here, but I think it's important to get realistic with the situation. It's fact that under the current UND leadership (Armacost / Chaves) that with the Athletic Department, your job performance does not matter. This athletic department performance under Chaves has been an embarrassing dumpster fire. There's no reason to believe it'll change. The post yesterday about Bubba getting an extension. I'm sure that will be the outcome. I really am shocked that as an alumni base / donors that what's happening is apparently ok. It's so frustrating.

2023-24 University of North Dakota Hockey Season

I spent most of the first half of the offseason continuously talking about how crucial it was to have a roster construction of 15F / 8D / 3G. W/ an emphasis that the 15th F / 8th D / 3rd G was designated. Those three were aware that was their roll. Outside of injuries they aren’t in. That hasn’t changed and Berry has done a good job of that. World is changing, I would include an extra F in that roll, I’d be ok w/ 2 more. I’m happy that he left mid-season. Better for him, better for the program. Year two of this Berry, hopefully this learning lesson finally sticks. Roster construction. Need guys that ok w/ not playing outside of injuries. Not the place probably, but no more 5th years. You played your 4 years, thank you, but let’s move on. It is frustrating that they lost a guy w/ a lot of talent, to play Albrecht. Recruit talent, play talent, develop talent. -
Good info. Curious why you'd be on the Pawlak side if internal than? Or just being a college starter at any position is the pre-requisite to being a competent OC?
-
What does his stat line in college have to do with how effective he is as a coach?
-
Let's talk this into existence. Bubba will take the decision completely out of Chaves hands. The Freund news was a shock to the system, but it also helped Bubba realize that what's best for the program is for him to step aside. 2024 will be his last year. The next 12 months. King hired. Great spring camp, continuity among the offensive side of the ball (no portal transfers), defense surprises. Bubba announces this will be the last year (before season). 8 wins. Bubba retires. Freund hired.
-
Starting to really hope for Sam King. This is of course if he's well respected and liked with the players. I'm absolutely convinced there wouldn't be some huge step down from a play calling standpoint, so keeping continuity and more importantly, the players offensively is priority #1. The bigger picture, how to move on from Bubba as quickly as possible, without him burning the program down on his way out. Ideally. Promote King, keep continuity. Get portal transfers defensively. I'll take 7 wins. Bubba retires. Freund hired. Let's start the new era, Phase II done.

Not an important argument, I'm genuinely curious why having Sioux Falls being 58 miles away from campus has any benefit to SDSU for recruiting student athletes.
