  1. Do you really think UND is going to hire an architectural firm to draw images for fun? (like they did) I am glad UND is not hiding the fact that they want to do things the "right" way so UND can have the resources to be successful!
  2. Or a more viable option (one hopes for at least the future) would be for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux to set aside a certain small amount of money each year from the millions they take in from Fighting Sioux athletics....(Heck how many Fighting Sioux club members would complain if they had to pay an extra $10 or so to watch a guaranteed televised playoff games?) equipped with that money they say "Hey KVLY/WDAZ/Fox put together a contract to show this playoff game. You can sell advertising to make money, use the radio feed to save on the number of people being sent there, and pay to use a the local areas production crew (in this case GVSU's).....if non of those cost saving techniques work. We will have to use the fund set aside for this. We (UND) will pay you to televise this game...or to cover any shortcomings you may have in your contracts. Or better yet, I hear that the University of North Dakota even has its own TV station on in Grand Forks on Channel 3. I would also be willing to bet some media type UND students and/or alumni that would also be willing to use their own time and money to go to Michigan to watch their beloved UND athletics and report it back to the masses helping to even further save money. Sounds like a very viable solution to a not to complicated problem that we at the largest and oldest university in The Dakotas have to "worry" about year after year. And if there is a flaw in my "system/solution" what are the ways that it can be improved upon to help make it a non-issue to help make this (televising all playoff games via FSSN or at least GF area) a non-issue in the future?
  3. Will this be because of possible public outcry (aka what the people want that might not happen otherwise without the emails and calls?) or..... because business (TV station/s) sees a profit (advertising) or goodwill? And if it is because of the first one and even if they both contribute...wouldn't it always be a better bet to do everything in the peoples power to get as many games televised per year? (the attendance argument not withstanding. Because the simple fact is everything has a consequence: bad and good).
  4. Or you could support businesses that support UND and go to Joe Sensors with 4 locations in the twin cities and watch the game! http://www.sensers.com/ Scroll to bottom of page they even has a Fighting Sioux Sports Network logo proudly displayed as one of their main channels they display.
  5. At least you don't fight it. Everyone here is somewhat geeky....it is after all now becoming hip.
  6. No offense, but you sound really nerdy.
  7. Looks like the great creator of this site, JimDahl may have beaten Gershman to the punch: Is the government now taking notice?
  8. The brilliant, Tu-Uyen Tran, of the Grand Forks Herald on his webblog, The City Beat, talks about how Hal Gershman thinks . While that point may be debateable as Tu-Uyen Tran points out. I think the ultimate is clear as both Tu-Uyen Tran, City Council Member Hal Gershman, and myself agree....There has been unintended consequences when government doesn't let a free market take place: The U of Minnesota has the same thing in "Dinkytown." Highly successful and popular esspecially after hockey and basketball games. Think if UND had the same thing on their campus. Places to socialize within walking distance from the Ralph and Betty for the adults and college students. Here is the unintended consequnce of that: It would be inheritanly safer. The highest percent of bar patrons in this town, UND Students, now usually drive to the most popular drinking spot in Grand Forks, downtown. There is no doubt that if there was a more reasonable alternative UND students would be more than happy to be safe and walk to and from their frats and dormrooms to SiouxTown (or any other new name it may become The first step should be for the City Counsel to reverse that because UND has a very unique opportunity on its hands with the development of the Bronson Property. The town and the college need to utilize that space to make unique experience for fans and students. The concept is partly being developed when we are now seeing the that the newest development on Bronson Property has housing above the commecial shops below. The problem is they need to be high (rises) for more students because of the lack of land. Within a decade UND will more than likely face another housing crunch. Also it ideally needs to have less parking or a parking ramp, essentially a replication of downtown. Interesting reads can be found at Development around the Ralph As Star2City pointed out: it is also a way to attract more students to UND: (via the New York Times:) is this partially why NDSUs enrollments have been increasing more rapidly? and the thread More Development Around Engelstad. My fear is that UND will drop the bomb and has a University Village with no bars, no unique shops, no unique restaurants: just more banks, tanning boths, Applebees, Quiznos, or simply to much commercialization without enough student housing.
  9. Are you on crack? It was a 2 minute standard charging penalty. No malice whatsoever. Not even close to "injuring" him. The point is you skate with your head down with the puck you are going to get rocked. That is in no way "minimalizing" the hit. It is a standard charge that happens hundred times a season.

    Playoffs

If the defense continues to play like they have been, we won't have much to worry about...except hoping we do better next year.
  11. Wouldn't that actually be the exact case? Word it as you wish: blood money, bribary, etc....... If the tribes agree that the only way they will approve the nickname is if we give them money. And if UND agrees, that is indeed exactly what people will think. Or even if UND "entices" them with money. Therefore, I think UND should never give a dime to a tribe to try and get approval of a name and image that the University itself has trademarked. Why would The University of North Dakota want to give away money (percent of sales, guarantee yearly salary, etc) when finances are already tough. And that money could be spent on bettering the actual university and its athletic programs. Who would have thunk it. Bribery is the practice of offering something (usually money) in order to gain an advantage.
  12. Parrot's Cay: Best kept secret in Grand Forks.
  13. Some people don't have the time and/or energy to sit here and read through countless posts (usually about nothing) to find substantial information. ....not that you said you did. I am thankful for people that start new threads to answer specific questions without weeding through "junk."

    Goodbye NCC

Everyone knows (whether admitting it or not) UND was the flagship school in the North Central Conference. Everyone (especially the presidents at other schools) knew that once UND left the conference. The conference was over. Look for UND to anchor another strong conference not to far in the distant future.
  15. Worst things UND could do!!! Being just UND, thus essentially having no athletic team identity. UND Fighting Calvary. 'Nuff Said!!!!!!!
  16. Sounds like a great way to get more "casual fans" interested in Sioux Hockey. Never a bad thing.
  17. More like jealous grapes.
  18. So why can't they find this aircraft?
  19. How hard is it to install GPS tracking devices in all the airplanes? I would have thought it would be standard by now.
  20. Unless the GM of KYLY is lying that is not the reason: [url=http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=51607&section=homepage]KVLY-TV 11 fires meteorologist
  21. I am not sure if a public university is different, but The state of North Dakota is a "Right-to-Work" state, but moreover.....does not have an exemption for "Covenant-of-good-faith" of the "Employment-at-Will" doctorine. I don't know where your company is located but in ND I can be fired for any reason, but that is why there is a judicial system and things can change.
  22. Exactly what I was thinking.
  23. Another reason he was able to balance the budget, but as Shawn-O points out there is more to an athletic budget than break even points.... I think we know where the largest University in the Dakotas stands.
